Manchester United have completed the £6.9million signing of Independiente striker Diego Forlan after the Uruguayan agreed personal terms and passed a medical at Old Trafford.
United swooped to sign the 22-year-old striker on Friday after he originally flew to England to discuss a possible transfer to Middlesbrough.
However, after meeting a delgation from the north-west, Forlan has decided to join the Premiership champions in a four-and-a-half-year deal.
He will not be eligible for United's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Boro on Saturday but should be available for United's Premiership match against Bolton on January 29.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I am delighted that Diego has agreed to join us. He is an exciting player who has plenty of talent and a bright future ahead of him.
"We've watched him three times and think he has good potential, two good feet, he's quick and a good header of the ball. At 22 he represents a good future."
Forlan declared himself "very happy" to be a United player and stated his intention to make an immediate impression.
He said: "I'll try to be useful for the team and if I can't score I'll try and help the team to score.
"But I'm very happy to be here - it's something when I was a child I dreamed about. When I came to see the match on Saturday I was surprised by all the people - and I saw they are a very good team."
"I watched the Premier League and when they played in the Champions League," he added: "I love the way they play.
"It's nice to be wanted by two teams but I am more than happy to have signed here," he told Sky Sports News.
"I wanted to know what was to going to happen in the future. Now I can begin training."
As for the differences between Manchester and his native South America, he admitted: "At 5pm it is dark - that is different!
"The people here are very kind so that's nice. My brother and my father want to come. They are very happy."
