Not in the national squad for supposedly not taking a high enough percentage of chances...
Sounds like a perfect replacement for Andy Cole then...
Which he is...

We're doing the same with Yorke, but the difference is, we don't need the money. Look what Parma and Fiorentina had to do! It didn't make the players of any less quality because of it!

That's exactly what I'm saying. They're all sorted.

If Forlan was that hot then I think more clubs would be in for him whether they were sorted or not. That's what I meant.

Roy - I was a bit surprised that you made such a swift about turn re your evaluation of Forlan earlier this month. Was it purely because you hadn't watched enough tapes?? Does this make you a dodgy scout whose judgement we might not accept quite so readily in the future?
YES
To be honest my main interest concerns youngsters who are not yet established, mainly 15-20 year olds, so seeing as there isn't someone of that sort who is that interesting at Independiente I didn't really watch too much of them and thus didn't see that much of Forlan either. When our interest in him was made known I found some of my old tapes of them and saw that he's actually a lot better than I previously thought. I won't lie to you, if it was up to me I'm sure he wouldn't be the first name on my wanted list but we could also do A LOT worse than him. I see him as a good player who could potentially turn out into a fantastic one and at 7 million I think he's worth the risk. Like I said in a different thread, I have a good feeling about it but I wouldn't bet my house on it.
But really - I appreciate that he's young and that he'll develop (hopefully) but I don't think he can be compared to a young (!!) Henry otherwise there'd be more than Boro, Español and us after him, no?
Well Lazio were very, very close to signing him but the deal fell through and I know Inter were interested as well. Also, Forlan has set his target on playing in PL and I don't think he's too hot on going to Italy/Spain cause he's rejected a few offers from there.

What other club did we have to contend with to sign Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? He's been good for us though don't you think?

I dunno how much he went for but I will tell you his goalscoring records in Argentina were A LOT less impressive than Forlan's (and he played for River, who are a much bigger club than Independiente). I think he scored about 10 in 40 games during his last 2 seasons.

I know he scored 6 goals in his final season...

Ahh....no-one else knew of Ole - he was completely unknown was he not? Blinding bit of scouting by United that.

Another point regarding the BBC article where the writer says Forlan isn't playing for Uruguay because of his finishing is that it is not completely true.
The Uruguayan coach has something against picking players who are not playing in Europe and seeing as Uruguay has more than 5-6 good strikers playing in Europe he has opted for them ahead of Forlan.

Agree...Dario silva is well ahead of him in the pecking order.

Bollox. Ollie had fantastic scoring records in Norway (something like 35 goals in 45 games during his 2 seasons in Norway), I'm sure all the top English clubs knew him.
There's no difference between Forlan and Ole, both were outstanding players for relatively mediocre clubs, even in their own country.

It was a genius bit of scouting!
So, if it was Ole being signed today, you would say: "If Solskjaer was that hot then I think at least another club would be in for him whether they were sorted or not." Is that it?

Dunno if this was meant to be tongue in cheek or not but D.Silva is not a half bad striker actually. He's done superbly in Spain playing for Malaga (had a cracking season last year) and is doing very well this year too. His 97/98 season at Cagliari was excellent as well.

Oh well that's me told (by Roy). Although when we were looking to sign Ole I thought (if my memory serves me well - which usually it doesn't) that we were the only club in for him. I don't remember anyone coming in for him. My point therefore being that only we had him well scouted. Furthermore OGS cost a mere 1.5m and even with inflation factored in that comes nowhere near the 7m we're paying for Forlan.
Look at the end of the day I ain't doubting Fergie (his brother perhaps ) but I find it odd that no other major club has really tried to get hold of him. If it's cos it's England for him and he's made that crystal, then perhaps I can understand the lack of interest from the big clubs. Fair enough, let's hope he does half as well as OGS.
