Television It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

I am rewatching the show all the way through. I just watched the Gang Solves the Gas Crisis. The guy whose car keeps getting ruined has me in tears.

I started rewatching this a few months back as my wife still hasn't seen it(I've failed as a husband, I know).

Every season is good and has at least 1 iconic episode that stands out, but I think season 7 is the best overall. There's not a single weak episode and it has so many iconic parts:

- Fat Mac (arguably the best thing to happen, ever)
- Rum Ham
- "May I offer you an egg in this trying time?"
- "Do not diddle kids..."
-
The Gang Gets Trapped
- Chardee MacDennis
- The High School reunion ("I got to have my tools!")

I literally just watched Frank’s Little Beauties

Love this show so much.

They say the world's your oyster
But oysters ain't for me
You're the belle of the ball
But you ain't my cup of tea
They always vote you best in show
But this doggy disagrees
'Cos I like life at Paddy's Puuuuub

I love how they reject this perfectly fine song by locking him in the basement  .

Are these going to start being put on Disney+? Most of the other FX stuff is now.

It's usually a few months behind on UK streaming services so I'll have to probably report some torrents to the authorities.

Anyone been listening to the podcast?
They are basically just talking shite over the old season 1 episodes.
Good listen and Howerton is hilarious.

Legend - Something to feel the gap between now and the new season. Think i've rewatched the whole show about 4 times now. This also reminds me of the podcast episode and Dennis, change of voice about the wars which tickled me. Cheers.

Listened to the first two. They definitely need to find some kind of structure and rhythm but it’s interesting to hear a lot of behind the scenes stuff and how the my perceive some episodes now.

Just watched the first two of the new season. Unfortunately just meh.

I think they’ve lost whatever it was they had. It feels like the social commentary has lost all of its subtlety and the gang doesn’t really suit the current evolving world that they’re trying to make the show in. It feels too much like they live in the real world now rather than an insane bubble that was the previous seasons up to around 10 or 11.

Second episode was stronger but not a great start. Only really laughed about Dennis and the girl in the second episode.

I didn’t like how it got involved with the election, I don’t think anyone really wants to see that.

I get what they were trying with the 1st episode but it wasn't that funny.

The show is about "batshit crazy stuff", and considering how mental US elections were, they were fighting a losing battle

It pains me to say it because I'm very fond of the show and the cast, but, yes, this is undeniably far below peak Sunny, and it's been for a couple of seasons. Still fairly enjoyable, at least for me, but I'm finally able to acknowledge the decline.

First one was decent. A few jokes got a chuckle out of me, especially the karen part. Second one was ace, so many cameos.

Never thought they'd bring back Pepper Jack. Almost like they were rewatching their old episodes one day and was like, hey lets try calling this dude and see if he's interested in another appearance.

Thought the Karen part and most of the references were unfunny.

The whole joke with them when they try to avoid being offensive is was usually that they end up being more offensive than the original thing they were trying to avoid. Now they're just actually unoffensive... and that's the punchline basically. Usually Dennis just saying 'Yeah you can't do that anymore'.

I thought the first episode and the first 3 quarters of the second episode were only ok. The stuff with Dennis with the girls was pretty funny.

This is really well put. I’ve been trying to find a way to describe how I feel about it. Part of me felt like instead of just shooting an episode, it was a little bit like “the Gang shoots an episode of It’s Always Sunny.” Or maybe it’s that Glenn, Charlie, and a Rob looked at the old episodes and tried to write a couple of episodes (hopefully not a full season!) that said “look, we want to make it abundantly clear that we the writers don’t believe the things the characters believe, here’s our effort at a Sunny episode with that in mind.” I don’t mind the show being self aware (like the awards episode) or self referencing but so far it all feels just a little too out of its own universe.

I liked them both, still quite a way off Sunny's peak, but still decent. I just watched S14, ready for the new season, and I think I prefer these 2 new episodes to anything from S14.

Though if they needed to bring back a black character to play Murtaugh, it shouldda been Z. An under-utilized supporting character. His jean-shorts bit is still one of my favourite parts of the whole show.

Listening to the podcast, which I'm enjoying even though I'm about to say something negative, I can't help but feel they are up themselves and lost the whole idea that made the show great. Especially Howerton.

I felt like they lost their way a couple of seasons ago but I know others feel otherwise. I’ve said it before but it feels like they’re trying too hard, the characters don’t feel as natural anymore

I thought last season was really, really strong so I'm a little disheartened to hear this one hasn't started off well. It's my favourite sitcom on telly (possibly ever) so I'll definitely be watching regardless.

They'll be some quality moments but yeah I wasn't expecting too much from this season.

Yeah it's not gonna get back to where it was.

CGI monkey just felt so unsunny. I laughed when I saw the title and had some hope but nope. When they were in the sweet spot I feel like they'd have gotten an actual monkey.

Will see where they go with the Ireland thing but the interactions just feel off now. Can't put my finger on it.

I'd say then expanding into different projects has had an affect on their interactions.

Charlie Day, less so because he has always seemed to be in other projects (playing roles in the Charlie side of a Venn diagram).

But with Rob Mc being in Mythic Quest and his foray into buying football clubs he's had more exposure which has impacted Always Sunny. In its hey day you felt like they really could be these horrible people who just happened to be acquaintances.

I really want to like the episodes but I dunno.

The bar is too bright for a start, I hate how bright it is, darken it down it’s meant to be a dive.

The monkey episode was the string of the 2 and the general banter and conversation was okay, their banter and how they make decisions etc is basically the entire show to me, and it isn’t landing like it used to.

Haven’t seen any of the new season yet but the noticeable decline started from season 12 in my opinion. It’s very difficult for this type of show, with these characters to stay true to itself in modern times. Considering it got another three seasons on the renewal (I think), I really hope it doesn’t become one of those shows remembered for the latter years where it clearly should’ve ended earlier.
