Italian Serie A 2022/23

What a gut punch for Viola. Did more than enough to win that.

Yeah, I think Fiorentina were overall slightly better than us and they would have deserved to win but our CB Tomori saved us with a brilliant goal line clearance at minute 90 while their CB Milenkovic one minute later condamned them with a stupid own-goal.
That's life

It's not just Dybala, Zaniolo, Wijnaldum and Pellegrini are also out often/permanently. And Tammy and Belotti can't play together with their thin midfield atm.
Roma is still very close to top4 and Roma's objective was never the league itself. Their season is nowhere finished.
IIRC they are the team that creates more chances in the league, as mentioned before they just are unable to score for their lives (today they even missed a penalty in extra time )
In big games though they barely created anything bar the atalanta game. It's a team that's generally been fantastic at pummeling weaker sides but mostly struggles against teams of a similar or better level. Granted, the injuries to Dybala and Zaniolo didn't help. Those are their 2 best players and they really lose so much of their attack without them

Fiorentina getting screwed by the refs, what else is new

Can't believe they didn't get that penalty :wenger:

Napoli should probably be scared now more by Juve than Milan.

Napoli had an absolute monster start of the season, hats off to them! Our season is not catastrophic like one month ago, still very underwhelming. Such a long break is uncharted waters but we are still alive.

They're 10 points clear, plus they're levels better. The only team they should be scared of is themselves. And whoever plays against Poland, South Korea and Cameroon at the WC

Serie A is corrupt. 15 years ago discovered the referee's corruption and nothing has changed. On Friday the head of referees was arrested because he is a drug trafficker. Incredible, but true. This is the Italian football.

To be fair, I don't impress with the level of playing we performed last night. We had a mediocre game, especially in terms of decision-making and passing. Leao made some silly decisions and errors that made me crazy too. Last night, Fiorentina was clearly a better side.

Not the head of the referees, the chief of the body that oversees their work. Which is kind of worse :wenger:

Just to make this clearer for people here not aware of the fact: the man in charge of overseeing the italian ref association(AIA) turned out to be a career criminal and was recently arrested for international drug trafficking. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. What better than a career criminal to determine whether the refs are clean

And this is Milan’s starting 11 for the first game of the day:

Ahh, this thread hasn’t been run for almost 2 months. It’s a fine starting line-up and I think we can get 3 points.

Serie A is comeback now.

What they've played in Italy in 2023 so far looks like some next level stuff set up by experts that swore an oath to never again miss a WC.

Atalanta fairytale is over.

It's what you get from selling Freuler, one of Serie A's most underappreciated players. :boring:

Hmm. Juventus keep picking up wins.

Got away with it today but that’s a huge 3 points for them. Awful performance but got the result

Anyone know what the situation with Ibrahimovic? He's still in the Milan squad but he's been injured all season. Is that right?

Comeback imminent, in January most likely, contract ends in summer, has recently spoken about his will to remain at AC, retiring from active football in summer looks likely.

On a different note: Lecce :)

Watched a bit of that Juve game and they were beyond awful, incredible that was their 7th win in a row and all without conceding a goal.

WC didn’t humble Lukaku then, still gesturing and moaning at teammates while fluffing sitters

Is it a 3-way battle between the Milan sides and Juve?
No o still consider napoli to have a very decent chance assuming the spalleti second half collapse doesn't come into play.

Hopefully the world cup hasn't ruined their form too much.

Napoli have played both Milan and Rome sides away, also playing away against Atalanta and Fiorentina. They are hosting Juventus next week, and will then be playing almost all top sides home, while only playing away at Juventus until the end of the season.

Doesn't neccessarily mean they'll win, but it's hardly a huge setback to lose away to Inter.

Tbh, I didn’t watch Napoli vs Inter because it’s too late night in my country. But after I wake up and see the result, I’m so fecking happy now. Great job Inter, although I would be happy if Napoli win it this season( Milan is still in the race hahaha).

Since 2020 I am liking the general level of play in Serie A, coaching, scouting done by clubs, also helped by Juventus losing that aura of inevitable winners.

When someone says this it isn't to compare with the glory days of Serie A, particularly in the 80's and 90's, I just feel sometimes people who watched that era have a tendency to downplay what is done currently there because it's not the richest league in the World as it used to be on those days.

Happy New Year, for a start, to you and all the Caftards enjoying Serie A. :D

As for your points, the only notable achievement in the recent years was from Pioli’s Milan, who really won a scudetto in spite of all the stars (…) aligning for Inter… the same happened the year before, with Conte’s Inter winning a scudetto in spite of a strooooong wind pushing Milan, so they are both satisfied now and peace.

As for Juventus, you can clearly see that despite all the disasters, the dark clouds, the injuries and the usual sh*tstorms, Allegri is finding a way again… yet, Serie A still needs badly Napoli to win this scudetto, so it’s just on Spalletti non to lose his cool as too many times in the past and they will stroll to the finish line…… one way or the other.

Because there's a serious lack of quality. If you haven't noticed yet Italy's National team is an absolute clustefeck of averageness - their national pool of players in the last 15 years has been criminally bad.
Even if you take the riches away Italian players were amazing back then while now they're just mediocre with a few flashes of brilliance from certain players. It's a joke how bad the nurturing of talent has been.

It wasn't an attack on Juventus, but it's clear the majority of people like a new winner here or there, regarding Spalletti, it won't be a surprise if they have a weaker second half of the season if we look to the historic of some teams coached by him in the past, but we don't know what's going to happen really.

I was talking about the quality of Serie A as a whole, not the state of Italy as a NT, yeah sure, they had better players in the past but in all honesty I see a lot of games in the Premier League and if it wasn't for the hype of millions spent there you don't see nothing special happening, it's not only in Serie A where you see that loss of quality.

But you see the lack of money and it shows massively. No top player would go to Serie A nowadays while back in the 90s you had players from Spain begging to go to Serie A.
There's barely any money involved,. the infrastructure are old and need renovating then there's the half empty stadiums...

I agree. Take away some of the advertising and marketing and the EPL has some utterly shite games on offer. Just look at how terrible United were to watch last season yet still finished 6th!

I gotta say, don't know if my perception regarding the overall quality of the league is based on City and Liverpool not looking great currently.

I just feel between 2018 and 2020 they probably were the 2 best teams in Europe, Chelsea is like a yo yo, Spurs you never know what to expect, only now United looks that it is going on the right direction and the only great improvement has been Arsenal and Newcastle, on a lower level Brighton also.

With this I am not saying it isn't the best League, but some of the big games this season have been complete crap, comparing with the level of former City vs Liverpool of the last years there's nothing close, I am not joking when I say I have watched more entertaining big matches in Italy recently than in England, of course it doesn't mean Serie A is the best league in Europe.

With all that said probably we will see a Premier League team winning the Champions League or Europa League, but for me these are the worst versions of a Guardiola or Klopp side in the recent years, probably they set the standards so high that we have ridiculous expectations for them.

@GifLord I agree with your analysis, just don't see how that affects saying watching some big games on Serie A has been entertaining, not saying they have the best players or teams to win in Europe, everyone knows Serie A has those problems.

Great pass from Paredes for the goal. Another late winner

Allegri keeps getting wins thanks to individual brilliance. Here from Paredes and Chiesa.
