It took 60 minutes to get a shot on target.

That's an awful statistic. Doesn't matter it's the first match, there are no excuses for that awful offensive display.

I don't know where our goals are going to come from. Rooney has not been in top shape, was hoping for Depay (and Pedro?) to chip in as well. If Walker hadn't poked it in we may have drawn. This is pretty similar to last season.

Its clearly the way we are set up. The players value possession first. Not scoring goals.

That and also playing people like Mata and Depay out of position.

Let's give it time. Spurs were quite robust in midfield and defence and are not a bad side. We need time to gel. Today was about the result.

Same shite as last season. We're just not that kind of team that produces lots of shots.

People are acting like we've just scraped a win against Rochdale or something. Spurs are alright. We ground out a win for the opener. I don't think many on here are jumping around saying we're set to win the league, but considering the amount of new faces and the lack of game time for some of them, we did ok. I still think we look more dangerous on the break than at any time we knock it around for fun though.

A working progress...we better start getting it working otherwise we will struggle.

Awful stat, but I'm not fussed. Unless, you know, it's like this for another 5 or so matches.

We have Mata being played out of position. Memhis being played in a new position. Young who had no idea how to get past Walker and Rooney who needs to get used to playing up front again. There you have it.

I thought that was what last season was for? We can't always be looking for cohesion, we actually have to move forward.

Didn't take Spurs that long, but they didn't score so they win on moral grounds.

Mata was not out of position. That is the position he usually plays.

Except that he is not a right winger. Why not switch him and Depay? At least Depay can utilize his pace out wide instead of being crowded out by defenders as evidenced in the second half.

The slow way we play is never going to suit the league end of.

You need pace in this league to win it. Playing Mata out wide isn't ever going to cut it.

I don't think it helps that everyone plays in a rigid, regimented way and no one interchanges.

Yea, another very damning stat. IF we can't create more we won't challenge.

It's poor but I think we will have to get used to not creating much, especially if we don't add some more pace, skill and quality in the final third. I don't think we will be an exciting team looking at the style of play and our current players.

In fairness though we looked well off the pace today so we will improve over next few weeks once players are a bit sharper.

Depay, Rooney and Pedro if played together in 433 have goals in them. Mata, Herrera will also chip in.

First game is always difficult but I do think we're gonna struggle to score goals. Build up play is too slow and our wide players don't offer enough.

a football game is 90 minutes and it takes just 1 shot at goal to score. It was just one game, it doesn't really matter.

And what a fantastic shot it was. :D

We win, people moan. We lose, people moan. Yeah, it was dire, tumescent and slow. When was the last time we were out of the blocks super quick and battered teams the first game? It's always like this.
Stop moaning FFS :p

We need more quality on the flanks which means depay and pedro on the flanks

We were fine. We won the game but had a rough last 10 minutes. Typical first game of the season. It's no where near as bad as some people are suggesting on here. Why don't we wait and see how everyone else starts before we start condemning our start.

I think we need to cut the team some slack given its the first day, and some nerves along with that, given how many debutants we had.

But our lack of creativity is an issue regardless of today's result. As much as I'd love it, it's hard to see Mata, Rooney and young being a front three that plays swashbuckling and lethal attacking football. But, early days yet.

Being played on the right doesn't mean you're a winger though. He's clearly there to cut in while the fullback overlaps. Same with Young on the other side.

I actually agree that Mata should be played central ideally, but it's not like Mata's been trying to burst down the touchline to put right footed crosses in

Dude, come on. It's Manchester United playing at home for feck sake, let's call a spade a spade. Whether it's the first match or the 30th match, this has to get better immediately.

We are slow starters is what I will say if I want to make an excuse. But, the truth is Spurs looked so much sharper, energetic than us, but unfortunately for them, they do not have as much luck.

Van Gaal knows that we lack pace and creativity, yet we have not done nothing about that. With pace and creativity comes better football and today exemplifies that we lack in that department. Keeping Di Maria and Welbeck would have been beneficial to our football despite what some of our fans taught about these players.

It's a problem that has carried over from last season though. Remember the Everton, West Brom and Chelsea games, even the Palace game and many others before that decent run. We create no chances and it needs to change. The personnel are part of the problem but surely LVG can see this and can see we lack creativity. 1 shot on target (probably about 3 on goal in total) in 90 minutes is a terrible statistic.

You do realise we had 5 new players today?

You do realise it took us 6 months to "gel" last season? I understand that we've made new signings, but we can't always use that as an excuse. Moreover, we signed players who we thought would fit into the system without any issues. About time we moved forward instead of sideways.

Or rooney would've finished it...

Aye, a front four of Rooney, Pedro, Mata and Depay would have enough goals in them.

The way we play is going to hinder our goal-scoring more than the individual players. It will be a very control/possession orientated set up that relies on a few key chances to win games. Can't see us being a high scoring team.

Still, with those four clinical players up front that might be enough.

We've lost opening games of the season before and won the league.

The result is always the most important on the first day to set the tone. And it does have to get better indeed.

They aren't magic players, of course there is a settling period with such a turn around.

The result is obviously good, 3 points in the pocket. But how many times do you expect United not to get punished for being so awful in attack?
