Is Weghorst the worst Premier League player we have ever had?

I’ve genuinely never seen a striker as bad at scoring as him. It’s to the point where I’d feel more confident in us scoring goals if we had non league Wrexham’s Paul Mullin upfront for us.

I don't think he's the worst, we've had loads of dross over the years

he contributes a lot off the ball so on that alone for me I wouldn't make him the worst

someone like Bellion for example was equally shit on the ball and did feckall off of it as well

Incidentally I actually think people "underrate" Kleberson and Obertan (they were genuinely bad don't get me wrong) because they were signed at the same time as Djemba x2 and Bebe in the same positions respectively, so you get people saying "the likes of Kleberson and Djemba x2/the likes of Obertan and Bebe".

The only consideration here is that he's probably the worst playing week in, week out. Certianly in terms of contribution and his role. We're visibly worse when he plays, other than a few matches right when he signed.

Never forget Dong. I believe he's still the worst I've had the joy of witnessing. By a long way.

In terms of technical ability he's the worst I've seen in 30+ years.

Overall he also has to be one of if not the worst that's played a decent amount of games.

Thats my point.
Can tell you have never played or coached football in your life. Great thread

Another wonderful poster who turns this personal. You dont know me, i dont know you.
i have asked a question, if you disagree fine, why turn it personal?

It's difficult to assess whether he's the worst but I can't think of a more limited player who has received this much game time. We might've had worse individual players but I'd be willing to bet we didn't persist with them as long as we have with Weghorst.

Pressing is OK, though he isn't particularly rapid or agile, but, aside from the issues around heading and general finishing which everyone lese has brought up, I'm not sure how his movement/ positioning is so lacklustre. Given the issues with finishing, how was he averaging 1 in 2 goals, even in slightly 'weaker' leagues, playing for often upper-mid level teams.

Some of it might be reluctance to assume positions because team-mates now don't want to pass to him in goal scoring situations where they can take on a shot or try and find someone else, but even so. I don't see particularly clever movement on corners or free kicks, although he's obviously get to one now and again and maybe should have 1-2 more assists if other players weren't also so bad at finishing. He just rarely seems to exhibit top-level striker's instinct or awareness, and doesn't even have the excuse of being a converted wide forward/hybrid player like Martial - or (more so prior to this season) Rash - in terms of not properly anticipating crosses or finding pockets of space or position where team-mate can find him in a 2 on 1 break against a defender, at least going off the 'eye-test'..

Thats my point.

Whats personal about that? I can tell from my years involved with and watching the game your have the observational skills of someone who hasnt played or coached the game. If you are going to make outlandishly stupid statements then be prepared for some blow back.

What, ever? Hell no, we've had some absolute stinkers over the years.

I mean he didn't play vs. Sevilla and that's among the worst we played... similarly you could argue our run when he first got into the team was probably some of the best we've played in 2023 (not that it was down to him but yeah).

He also played well in our biggest game so far this season (Cup Final) which should stand for something.

But yes, Dong is easily the worst footballer - people brand around "competition winner" to describe players, but Dong is the only time that statement is actually true.

Why did the rest move to non league before retiring whereas WW has accomplished a very nice career? Feck if only the managers of Wolfsburg, Beşiktaş, AZ and the Dutch national teams had the ability to judge players as well as Caf posters.
As I said, I can't be bothered to split hairs. He's been as useless for us as any one of them.

Use the player performance thread.

Discussion. Does anyone here think that we would still be top half if you played instead of him in every minute he has played?

(You would have had a year to prepare + pre season)

I think we would get relegated with me because I would have injured myself hacking out Andy Carroll and getting banned for the season too leaving us with only 10 for those games. (You cant just say youd sub yourself off)

Yay, another WW thread!

And another idiotic one! What are the chances

The idea that anyone on here would be better then an actual international professional football is profoundly ridiculous. Though at least the OP is aware of that.

Probably wouldn't have beaten Barcelona (one of his better games, but instigated unfortunate tendency in Ten Haag to see Weg as capable of affecting games regularly as no.10 because it worked in that game, which was a little like managers seeing McT as potentially elite because of one performance against City). Maybe would have dropped 2 more points elsewhere during his initial run of games where he pressed effectively. Otherwise, much the same..

I'd be suspended by the club still in August for allegedly engaging in drug-fueled orgies and we'd go on an sign another striker.

If I somehow passed the drugs test I’d be throwing up on the side of the pitch within the first 20 mins.

If Ronaldo had still been any version of Ronaldo from 21-33 years old, wanted to be here and stayed, then I think United might have ended up 2nd.

I think Ten Hag was put in a bad position by starting the season with him. And that’s not WW’s fault
