Is Van Gaal the reason we MIGHT sign big names...

And what did happen? Conspiracy theories aside, i believe we tried to sign him, offered reasonable fee, Athletic has declined to negotiate and we backed out, because we did not believe him to be a 30+ mil player. Also Bilbao is notoriously hard to negotiate with and these buy-out clauses are actually very tricky, it's not like they are activated with an offer from another club, like some might think.
Everything else is probably agents/intermediaries looking for an angle.

Carvalho is already a quite high profiled player. Not in the same group as Cesc, but still. I think if LVG want Clasie, he will get him.
Carvalho is high profile? No one knew about him before this season. He has been brilliant this season which is why he has received so many accolades. And with Herrera we knew everything going into the deal. We knew they would be hard to negotiate with and yet we offered below what they wanted and didn't do shit. And when we knew they wanted £30m or so, we couldn't offer them an extra £3-5m to get him?

But everybody does now. And he cost over 30 mil, which a "high profile" enough.

Where are you getting all that from? If D mail writes some stuff it does not exactly make it true.
Also you need to read some proper stuff about spanish football. When this Ander story broke out, proper professionals like lawyers commented on this issue. One thing i've learned is that Bilbao would not be forced to accept the fee and conduct transfer even if United would have offered to pay the release clause sum. The way it works, is actually the player himself should post the fee as a bail-out of sorts. And due to tax implications this type of deal could not even be done n a week, let alone couple of days or hours, so after the rejected offer United just probably dropped interest.

Van Gaal is the reason we might not sign big names.

I expect one or two big names, but I have a feeling his wants to create his own players.

What a nonsense thread. We might sign big names cause we're MANCHESTER FECKING UNITED. Arguably the biggest club in the world ffs! I would bet there are literally a handful of players in the world who wouldn't sign for us if we offered the right wage.
Eh not so sure about that..If you are good enough you will have plenty of big clubs chasing after you these days, and United right now isn't the most stable place imo, many may opt to see in which direction we are going. Its not THAT easy to get back to CL as many believe, even for us

I agree, and I think some people just aren't used to this.

Taking off the goggles - with the same wage being offered, what indicates that our future is brighter than Arsenal's, Chelsea's, City's, or even Liverpool's?

The past is the past. And, in fact, the major reason for our glorious past is no longer here as manager.
We aren't unique due to stability any more; there are managers who you'd back/trust to win more trophies in a five year period than Van Gaal.
The days of just being able to sell ourselves because of our name are gone, in my opinion. It will still attract some players, but not the majority of players who can choose where they go from a host of ambitious clubs. To attract those players you need to sell the manager's vision.

So to suggest we have the upper hand purely because of our name is arrogant, in my opinion. And the reasons we had to be arrogant before (mainly the near certainty that Sir Alex would deliver year on year) aren't here any more.

Van Gaal will be vital in the signing of any big names, unless we're willing to put up serious serious money.

I'm kind of encouraged by Van Gaal calling time on certain transfers and the club being quick to declare non-interest. It seems Van Gaal has an idea of exactly the players he wants and a vision of where he wants to take the club.

[please feel free to quote this back to me if it all goes mammaries-up in a years' time]

I think if Van Gaal want's to sign dutch players from Eredivisie, we better move fast and strike the deal before WC. Because we have and advantage here, LVG knows their abilities very well. Obviously most clubs know that Indi, for example, is a good player witha good potential, but most of them are actually unsure whether he can make it on a bigger stage, so they will probably wait for WC and scout him some more there.
And if Holland team has a successful tournament the price will soar and there will be many other "determined" suitors.

Yes, manager pull is bigger then ever, people change clubs just because Jose rang them, don't underestimate what a managers name can offer

Shaw also said he hadn't talked to either Giggs or LVG.

People tend to overrate those things. The reason you're signing these players is because you're spending big money, enough to convince the clubs to sell and the players to sign.
Everything else is less important.

Yeah without Van Gaal we wouldn't be able to sign anyone.

I believe that the major reasons we attract top players is because the club has long history of success, it has the resources to pay high wages and gives payers the opportunity to play before huge crowds in all the top competitions. That being said I do think the manger has something to do with the attraction. LVG being well know through out Europe is the kind of manger players expect United to have and it's only when we have a manger that nobody has heard of that the manger becomes part of equation.

Players like Schweini, Kroos or Robben may definitely consider the LVG factor. The guy traveled whole Europe and made huge amount of connections and put his teachings and influence in big teams and whole generations of players.

People including big name footballers will trust him because he was part of many reforms in past and modern game.

No brainer.

I could understand this thread if we were signing world class stars who had all waxed lyrical about the manager while signing for the club, but we've signed two young players with bags of potential with everything to prove. These are the signings this club is built on ffs.

Foreign players. Having a top manager at the helm who is respected worldwide is always more appealing. You would not here Mata say Moyes is one of the best managers in the world and i look forward to working with him like Herrera did. As much as i understand money is and will always be a big factor, club status and the manager are key decisions for players too.

Basically this. Neither player appeared to have serious offers from elsewhere. We offered them a step up and better money.
We could have signed these guys without a manager, to be honest.

It's the players who are in serious demand, or already playing regularly at top clubs who may need convincing by the manager's record or future vision.
The likes of Sanchez and Vidal.

Which is why I wouldn't say we're a bigger draw than Chelsea just

No one's saying Utd aren't a major draw, but how can you argue Utd + Moyes is anywhere near as attractive as Utd + LVG to the top players? Look at what he's doing with a fairly ordinary Holland team for one.

100% its a factor. SAF was a major selling point for the club and LVG has a fantastic reputation across Europe.

He pretty much signed the entire Ajax squad which were the a few of the biggest players of their time.

What? Of that great period Kluivert, Bergkamp, Frank De Boer, Ronald De Boer, Davids, Seedorf, Reizeger, Rijkaard and Van Der Saar all came through the youth academy. Overmars was signed when he was 19 for 820K, Bogarde when he was 24, Litmanen for pennies from MyPa in Finland and Finidi Geore came from Sharks in Nigeria for nothing. Danny Blind was already there.

What am I missing?

It's clear that foreign players know van Gaal but most likely they would only now recognize David Moyes only as the manager who made Manchester United finish 7th.

He's on about the players he signed from Ajax after he left

He meant that LvG signed nearly all Ajax squad when he was at Barca.

Is he the reason all by himself? No, money is a bigger factor both in terms of transfer fee and salaries. Another factor would be the prestige of the club as well. Having said that having a manager of LvG's caliber certainly helps versus having someone with no winning track record like David Moyes.

No, but he's a major reason we are being decisive as opposed to messing about like we did under Moyes last year.

If you do sign big names then I dont think its to do with the manager, it'll be because its England and United.

If we are in contention with City the manager may be the difference but if it's with chelsea not really because:

For me this is the equation: Money + Language + Country + City + Manager + Teammates = Signature (in a decreasing order)

if it was last season we would have been in the same context than City, we can battle City in the money department, so the only difference would have been the Managers, and Pelligrini is most known by the players.

It we were battling with Chelsea the main difference would have been London which is sufficient to see us lose and after that marginally the manager.

How about we've missed out on a lot of big names because we never wanted too pay up absurd money and that we don't like paying agents.

We are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have been for quite some time. That along with money attracts the big names.

While we did pay very much over the odds for both players (Shaw and Ander Herrera) i think that LVG also gave United a bit of an edge to push deals through.
