Is there a place for Rashford as a regular starter?

He can't play upfront.

After greenwood came on he dropped slightly back and was better because he could run at the defense. When cavani is fit, rashford should be on the wings.

Yeah agreed, he’s no good with his back to goal, no touch, no control, lay offs not good enough. Has to be out wide for me or a super sub.

I think he's grown too comfortable with his status in the club. I don't see a confidence issue. I see someone who is complacent.

Really does look like he needs to dig deep to save his career and win fans back. I partially blame Ole, he played him to the ground without rotating.

Hopefully he picks himself back up. At this point he really does have to dig deep.

He's had loads of rest with the injuries and lockdown.

He just looks like he's not that fussed about football anymore. If he's like this on the pitch imagine what he's like in training.

No and he should de dropped. I wonder why they cannot drop him? Or sub him?

Then Rangnick needs to be ruthless and bench him. Make him appreciate what he has. We have more than enough players who are in his position that we can replace him with.

The fact he's treated as an undroppable player annoys me a lot.

Just bench him when he's off form. I don't get it. Why do we keep playing him while he's awful ?

Yeah, it's quite clear his best position is on the bench. Can't be having freeloaders and poor performers starting for us week in, week out.

I'm pretty sure Rangnick will only have an interest in players who have the desire and ability to implement his tactics. And I'm pretty sure what Rashford did today was not in the plan. So something will have to give.

He'd be good coming of the bench in the middle of second half and running at tired legs as a wide player behind the front two.

A super sub if you will!

Some time out of the team and limelight won't do him any harm. He will be back.

And let's not start pretending any of the front 4 are playing well. Ronaldo still knows where the goal is but his general play has been awful at times like it was today. Bruno looks same as Rashy. And even Sancho has barely done anything of note all season.

The forward line needs a certain Uruguayan to come spice things up.

Maybe Rangnick saw Brentford on Tues as the trickier fixture and had Greenwood saved for them.

To be fair… looked miles better when we moved him left for the last 15

Not suited to the role he started in.

he is quite poor with his back to goal and at quick interplay, regardless of form.

Need space in front of him to commit players

He wasn’t as shit after we have scored, but nothing to do with his position but rather than more space had created for Rashford to run in behind when Norwich committed more players forward.

Not a surprise as this has always been his downfall against teams with low block

Southgate will probably still include him in the WC squad …though on current form only as a bench warmer.

The only regular place for Rashford is on the bench and he should count himself lucky to be there.

He's been abysmal for 2-3 seasons now with the odd decent goal here and there, which is no where near enough of a contribution to warrant a starting place.

Bench him!

He's on terrible form, him and Bruno seem incapable of playing possession football. It's like they're in counterattack mode in every single ball.

What does Rangnick sees thay I'm not? I thought Sancho was playing way better and Rashford was terrible and still he subs Sancho. I'm lost here.
Was thinking the same especially with Bruno. He's always looking for a killer pass and where there's none he'll force it and throw away the possession. His every pass tries to be an assist. Rashford on the other hand doesn't have good decision making to lead the line in a possession system. He wants to run and shoot. He looked so unnatural linking up with the other attackers.

He needs a bench role for a while, along with Bruno.
Between their run and gun decision making and Ronaldo's poaching we had 3 guys who were less about optimizing our link up play and more about the final ball. They are still playing direct football. Nothing wrong with per se but the front 3 could do with some balancing. Martial might have been a big winner under Rangnick if he wasn't sulking again. Sancho will be huge.

Because that's not allowed for obvious reason. Remember when Ole said he need to focus on his football (a totally reasonable request) and get abused for it?

Ok I am wrong. He will 100% be picked on merit and nobody ever attack Ole for his "focus on football" talk :)

I cannot remember anyone attacking Ole on that. In fact people were supportive of Ole when he tries to get them focused back on the football. After all he is a professional football player and not a MP.

I just knew Lingard would be a bad influence on him. He’s become to complacent and being a local lad maybe thinks he’s got more privileges then an outsider….

Well put, agreed

I’m just not sure he’s good enough at the small things to start for a side that wants to contend for titles. He can certainly be a great super sub for us against tired legs but we all know that’s not what he wants. Don’t think it would be a terrible idea to move him on for a big fee if the interest is there, he’s never looked the same since the back injury.

I have a lot of respect for what rashford has been doing off the pitch, but I don't think he's been the same player since he started investing a lot of his time and energy into that. His career progression has slowed, his performances have dipped, and he's nowhere near as focussed. He looks lost at the club. Granted, there are things more important than football and causes one must fight for, but if we are strictly talking about football here, then I don't think the distractions have done him any favours. That said, I do support his cause.

Why is his positional versatility so horrendous? Even the people who pluck isolated stats out of the air to prove that he can't have been shit in the last game because 2 years ago he got a load of assists (or something) seem to inadvertently accept this point. Ineffective through the middle, for some reason has justification to play like he's just been hobbled if he's on the right - I don't see what it is about his game that's so unique and special that the magic can only happen if he's playing from the left. Moreover I don't understand why those who defend him can't see how that's admitting he's incredibly limited as a footballer. Sure all players have their preferred positions but surely you'd expect some versatility or adaptability. Even when he's played on the left for some reason he's incapable of fulfilling defensive duties. I suppose every time the opposition are in position he's injured again?

The fact people use 'it's not his fault, he should be playing from the left' as a way of defending the player not realising what they're actually doing is highlighting how ridiculously limited he is, just shows how far some of the fan base have gone in making excuses for the lad. Mind you even that isn't as bad as the 'fit to play, too injured to track back' mantra of recent months.

I honestly don't know what more we need to see to accept he's a very limited player

Exaggerated nonsense, no one defended Rashford's season. As usual just lies.

He just look so disinterested that it is worrying. I just hope it is not the case. It is no uncommon for footballers to burn out and completely lost passion for the game and I really hope the new sports psychologist can help him.

Ideally is to bench him and get him sorted off the pitch. But from Rangnick's comments on Greenwood lacking in athletic abilities to start, it's seems we don't have much options to rest Rashford. Maybe Cavani provided he is not injured himself.

It's not individual performances. The trend has been there for a long while. Apologies for not quoting who it was in this (or the other thread) but I agree with the suggestion that even when he was posting good numbers for the stat enthusiasts, there was still something off about his game and that trend over a significant period has continued to the point where he isn't even getting the key stats some use to defend him. His game has been declining for a significant period of time.

Yeah, I actually thought we'd see Martial up front partnering Ronaldo in this new system, since he's relatively decent with his back to goal and should work nicely with Sancho in particular. Really is a shame how his United career looks to be ending.

The idea behind playing Rashford instead is so he can (in theory) stretch the defence with his runs in behind, giving Fernandes an outlet and creating space for Ronaldo - but we've seen time and time again that he struggles when a team sits deep and doesn't give him space. Neither he nor Ronaldo are good at holding the ball up, which would be less of an issue if they were at least linking up together - but they seem to have literally zero chemistry.

It'll be a massive surprise if Rashford starts the next couple of games.

As bad as he was, I thought he was the most dangerous attacker out of the four.
I think it would be best to take him out of the firing line and let Greenwood start.

He's always staring at the floor, whenever something doesn't come off.

He used to play with so much energy and enthusiasm, never dropped his head. To me it almost looks like he's having some issues in his private life.

Hopefully he can get himself to together, and the club can assist him where/when needed.
