Is RedCafe too harsh on flair players?

Antony's arguably the most unimaginative wide attacker I've seen at the club.

It has nothing to do with 'flair players'. Elanga gets battered too and he's the antonym of 'flair'. Redcafe is deservedly critical of attacking players that look toothless.

Back in the days I'd say there was some truth in it with Nani etc. but we were winning everything in that era. The standards were sky high so a few below average games were met with a massive overreaction.

Look at how Nani was treated by United fans and there's your answer.

It certainly didn't help that he was juxtaposed with Park(who I also love). He kind of became the natural counter. You could never fault Park's work rate and you knew exactly what you got with him. Nani had a much higher ceiling and way more flair, though.

The Park "versus" Nani discussion is interesting, because it kind of reveals who your closest circle of United friends are. In my circles people preferred Nani even before he became top class.

Could probably leave out flair and it's a valid question.
Yup. This place is crazy

bruno Fernandes is basically the heartbeat of the club for about 3 years and apart from McTominay and Maguire probably gets the most critisism

There was a poster in the match thread writing off Weghorst after 27 mins into his debut

It’s stupid to judge a player based on so few matches. It’s the same thing every time. The social media generation just got no patience at all.

Maybe I’m just getting old but yes, absolutely and it’s got even worse than it was in the Nani days

The treatment of Antony is a disgrace. Also horrible what I read on Bruno.

This thread is moronic.

People writing off Antony after what? 20 games?

Agree, this forum has Anthony squarely in their sights for a booting. I am raging personally about this. The lad is new to the league and has played 10 games. He has an xg of 2.45 folk on here have already written him off. Get the flags ready " Ten hag out, take Antony with you" One compares it to the disaster Veron was. Mahrez this Mahrez that. Yesterday news folks and he is 31 and played in premier for 9 years being compared to a lad in our team for a few weeks. I really do give up when i read some of the comments.

It's British style I think, which I agree by the way. Flair should be tolerated from players that actually know when to execute it. Had anyone ever criticized that piece of magic by Berbatov against West Ham? I don't think so. Flair is an artistic execution of football technique in a moment where it makes sense. Flair isn't attempt of a fancy dribble where a simple pass makes more sense - that is showboating or idiocy.

I would love to do an average rating on guys like DDG, Bruno when they won our POTY. I don't think it'll be higher than a 6.5.

I was not here then, but surely that can't be right? I just assumed that the criticism is weird and recency biased.

Happy to be patient but the guy needs to at least try using his right foot. He's way too predictable

I cant understand why this isnt a thing with every player. Surely the most basic thing is to train kicking with your bad foot. As a professional you heard Best and Ronaldo practiced that much their left was better than their right a lot of times. If they could manage it why cant all the players do it?

IWhat it does is how the difference between fans and supporters, the former are fickle and the latter does what their description says, we have a lot of fans but fewer supporters

I mever post in the match forum because I'm busy watching the game not bashing a keyboard!

Maybe for the same reason we're not all pro footballers

You get a top red cookie medal

I was a carpenter years ago and had to saw, nail and screw with my right (I was left handed) a lot of time. Over time I was good with either hand. Its only practice and if I was a pro footballer I would certainly have practiced with both feet.

I think its more to do with his price tag and expectation in general. But I don't think Antony was much criticised in relative to some others.

I know what you mean but there's a big difference at elite level, nobody was having a go at Shaw who's right leg, until this season, was for standing on

Redcafe is just full of too many morons who don't understand the game. Have probably never kicked a ball and just like to moan.

Give Antony a fecking chance he is a young boys in a brand new league probably struggles with language etc.

We could sign prime Messi and the cafe would find a reason to moan

I've been a little disappointed in Antony so far, I was expecting a bit more but that's not an excuse for the abuse he's been getting, his ball retention is very good, much better than others I could name, as said, he's young, he's in a new country and a new language

Unfortunately he comes with a price tag so people put more expectation on him. If he cost 30m he probably be getting praised. He didn't give himself that price tag. We didn't take the money out of our pockets to buy him so people should relax and be patient.

Ronaldo wasn't perfect when he first joined and I think he done OK.

Antony's 0.6 dribble per 90 minutes (c.f. Hazard, Messi, young CR7 who had 4+ dribbles per game) and his expected 0.07 assists over 10 PL games is hardly an indicator of "flair".

yep - Ronaldo was a show pony when he joined, it took 50 stepovers before he did anything!

When was the last time any player has lasted more than a couple of seasons without being called a fraud/championship player etc?

That's never happened, trust me, in a years time Casemiro will be too slow and past it according to someone and is only championship standard

The thing Antony gets criticised the least for is probably his tricks. The flicks and pointless spin have hardly been a major talking point here, maybe in the media but certainly not on here.

He's criticised for being painfully limited so far. Most of the negativity surrounding him has been his unwillingness to use his right foot, not taking on his man enough and being overpriced by about £50m.

None of that has anything to do with being a flair player.

It might not even be in a years time. If he has a few below par games on the bounce he'll be written off by some. "Real Madrid did us over", "why did we pay so much for a 30 year old" etc etc

That's true, I mean I think it was 27mins when Weghorst got slagged of!

This is already covered in player performance threads so the same shite is being regurgitated again.
Better off not bothering creating threads unless they are different from what is already there.
