Is Neymar about to overtake Ronaldo

What standard could be higher than a worlds best player ranking? I'm not the one coming up with the highest of standards, and I wouldn't. He's a world class player, very skilled, but he's hyped. "He was involved in every goal", it's Barcelona, they move the ball around before scoring, a lot of players are involved in a goal. Stats are beeing thrown, there about 30 pages of well edited YT-video's about him, and more than a few from his sponsors, speculation about best player award, transfer rumours with ridiculous money won't be long now. This Neymar brand has got to be sold as the best in the world, well I'm just looking at the match and I'm not buying it.
Well, he was better then Messi in that game, who is considered one of the greatest of all time. His performance was also better then anything Ronaldo has shown in the past year. So, who is the best in the world then?

Why would the caftards who rightly sing his praises even be interested in the "Neymar brand" ? Sometimes it's really as simple as watching matches.

I'm not saying they have an interest in it, I'm saying that superstardom is fabricated these days and Neymar is the chosen one. Not because he's the best player but because he's Neymar. I'm not buying it and it annoys me. You can choose to buy it, or you can genuinely and independently think Neymar played better than Suarez and Messi. To me that seems unlikely, but it's possible. But if he was that good, why take a gif of an insignificant trick in the match to start speculating about him beeing the best in the world. Didn't he do anything of importance that match?

Best player on the pitch and has outperformed both Suarez and Messi so far this season. Shitting on his achievements just because he is Neymar is equally as stupid as bigging him up just because he is Neymar. Watching him and basing your opinion on what you have seen makes a lot more sense.

You really seem arrogant to assume the reason why many people people rate him highly. I know that I watched the match in its entirety (same with the Classico) and that he was clearly Barca's best player. Forget the gif and take the entire matches into account.

Yes, much more than saying he has outperformed Suarez and an injured Messi by pointing to statistics, and then ignoring his poor statistics from tuesday's match. Or a nice clip of individual highlights, like a cross that's not accurate enough but gets volleyed in brilliantly by Suarez. Not every Neymar touch is a highlight nor brilliant. I'm not shitting on his achievements, I'm stating that he's beeing hyped and beeing overrated when people start spreading the idea that he's the best footballer in the world or that he was brilliant tuesday because he did a nice but insignificant trick with his first touch. Suarez and Messi were running the show on tuesday, with especially Suarez speeding up the attacks and surprising the defence with his touches.

I don't watch much entire games from the primera division, so I would have believed people if they said he was brilliant and taken tuesday's performance for a just a lesser day in a good streak, as I've seen him have before in the Champions League. But when his match from tuesday is taken as an example that he's becoming the world's best player, I know he's getting hyped again.

Agree somewhat. It was an incredible collective performance by Barça in which several players were excellent and Neymar stood out the most of all for me personally. However, I also wouldn't label it "brilliant" or anything like that. He's had quite a few better ones this season (e.g. against Villarreal and RM). It was quite a mature performance though, I would add.

On the other hand: overall, he's clearly been the best and most consistent performer so far this season in Spain (up until recently Nolito was also up there for me but he's fell into a bit of a dip) -- coupled with his previous season that means he's overtaken Cristiano's level over the corresponding period for sure. As far as the world's best player goes... I don't think anyone can deny that he's been on the rise in any case and that if he goes on like this he'll get there someday (though a lot will depend on Messi as well).

I was quoting this tweet from "trusty transfers" as an example of hyping. With a name like that, the interest in hyping seems obvious.

Hyping tends to do two things, it annoys a few people, and it makes other overrate the hyped one. I'm the kind that gets annoyed by hypes, and also that could cloud my judgement. But you can't say he outperformed Suarez and base that on statistics while Suarez statistics are quite brilliant to, and then say he outperformed Suarez and Messi to while ignoring all statistics from that match, statistics with a lot more difference. I don't care which one scores the goals, especially not in such a fine partnership, I just rate Suarez involvement in the goals much higher because his touches were the ones that surprised defences, speeded up attacks and made great chances or goals out of good attacking moves.

But he's not the only one on the rise and we all know that Ronaldo is not happy playing in a squad struggling to form a team. So that's not a fair comparison with Neymar beeing part of such a unique partnership, and Ronaldo's shape could change in a few weeks.

It's the partnership that stands out, and is so great it makes statistics even less telling than they already were. I especially applaud Neymar for beeing part of such a partnership. He's still quite young, and there must be enormous pressure on him from his home nation, his agent and huge marketing interests to mess up this partnership and become the stand out player, the single superstar with the great statistics. But he doesn't so far, he keeps playing like a real team player. For Messi and Suarez it's easier. MSN isn't a hype, it's a present to football fans all over the world, it's a victory from football over commercial interests.

I know I haven't and despite the stats which are great for both, I think Neymar has slightly edged it and specially this season.

No one is hyping him just because of statistics, they are hyping him because he has been the best performer this season in the team that just won the treble and comfortable leads La Liga (ie the best team in the world today). If you watched the games this season, which you clearly haven't, you wouldn't disagree.

So it is pretty disingenuous to say people are being clouded by marketing or some other idiotic theory, when you take one match vs Roma and use it as a strawman because you are too lazy to watch the other matches.

I've seen matches with him before, but I watch football for fun and that limits the amount of live games I watch every week. Barcelona against some minor club from Spain usually doesn't make it, besides that those aren't the matches were players prove to be the best in the world. I just don't judge players performances on YT clips, which are almost by defenition hype serving video's.

But as I said, I would have happily taken Neymar's performance from tuesday as a lesser performance in a brilliant streak when the Neymar fans here wouldn't have taken this performance for an excellent one.

Remember the days when we used to talk about who was better between Rooney and Ronaldo?

I wonder how that turned out?

I think it wasn't one of his best matches, but the point is that it is extremely lazy and just trying to go against the tide to take one match as a strawman. If you don't have time to watch the games, it's fine. Just don't say its all marketing/hype/whatever..

This is the kind of simplistic opinion I would expect to overhear on the train to work or something. Not on a football forum where people actually watch matches.

"Neymar brand" ffs
