Is Lingard as good as gone? | Contract extended by one year

Just imagine the not unlikely scenario that there are no takers for him in the summer and we end up having to pay his wages for another year until he eventually leaves for nothing anyway...

These decisions only make sense when you actually flog them for a decent fee. They don’t make sense when the player is happy to hang around like a bad smell: Lingard strikes me as that type. He’ll be able to use the club to promote playing minor celebrities on the PlayStation for a little while yet.

Eh I get it, we want to get some money for him, but in truth it seems more likely he'll just still be here then doing absolutely nothing. I hope he has the desire to leave and play some football, because I still think he could do a decent job for a lower to mid PL side.

Oh, feck off...

We sure like adding to the deadwood scrap heap. No one’s going to come him for him so yeah, let’s just continue paying him £100k a week for another 18 months so he can show his smiley little face around training.

What’s the point? Just let him go ffs.

I mean even if we fog him for under 10 mill it’s still better than 0 mill.

We all know what will happen though.

Nobody will want him on the wages he's demanding so we'll just be stuck with him for another 18 months.

It's a shocking decision by Utd

It’s unsurprising tbh. We did the same with Rojo & Jones and yesterday was confirmed that we’ve offered TFM a new deal. New contracts get handed out left, right and centre at this club.

In principle retaining some value makes sense but has it ever actually worked out for us? Plus it's obvious this is what we're doing so why would any other club bother negotiating at this point when they can see what and why we're doing it. He's just going to end up rotting here.

I presume extending his contract means he'll take a place in our squad roster? If so, it's blocking a potential replacement. Ole doesn't seem to rate him, so keeping him around seems utterly pointless and counterproductive to developing the squad. The Premier League allows, what, 25 players in the roster? So he takes up a place without appearing to be actually wanted.

Just when you think you've finally gotten rid...

We act like charity organisation sometimes. I can't believe that we extended contract to a player who is not even on the bench

Surely he can't legitimately be on 100k a week, or around 5m a year?

Would we even be able to sell him for 10m?
He was an England international, and while he's not United level he's definitely worth half the league signing...but we don't tend to get good fees with the wages we pump in.

It makes no sense in a season where he's made about 2 appearances by the end of December!

What a meltdown in here.

Big deal, we may get some cash for him in the summer, we may not.....who cares and dont start whingeing about squad space etc. Its only a 12 month extension.

Utd fans care!

We're wasting money on a complete no hoper. Money that could be better used elsewhere.

I can only think or more to the point would like to think we have done this to get him out on loan in the hope we can sell him on in the summer

how much is he on? Incompetent stuff, the board with zero football knowledge treat players as any other assets... problem is Lingard has no value and is generating hefty cost

Hardly a big deal with it only being a year. He's barely played but we've been very fortunate with injuries so far this season.

It's not hard to understand, good age still, well capable of scoring & creating a goals, decent number of games for England, and would improve alot teams right now in the premiership, etc.

Lingard has always been an easy target for alot of United fans, but we have alot of other players on the books far more worthly of this imo.

Think this will work out better than the other times we have done this.

He’s English (no work permit and helps with quotas), has at least some quality and can fetch £5m at least, which will make this worthwhile. He won’t be here past the summer.

1 goal and no assists in the league in the last 2 years.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about. He still has value. No self respecting business would let him walk for free when he still has what is effectively a year left.

what happens when nobody wants to buy him and he walks for free anyway? Nobody wants to buy him now, will be a year older and a year not playing

Im not surprised, we always do the same mistakes. Hopefully this is the last extension we give him but I can perfectly picture us giving him a 4 year new contract in 2022.

The meltdown on here is embarrassing. We've kept on a squad player who could be very important to keep around the place if there's an injury crisis. Everyone wanted Bailly sold but he's suddenly putting in some good performances, so worth having these squad players around the place if they have the right attitude.

Lingard is known to train well, doesn't cause trouble. We might even get a few bob for him in the summer.

It's the logical decision.

Which club in this current climate will give us serious money for him plus pay him £100,000 a week in wages?

I'd rather play Hannibal for a one off game if things got that bad injury wise rather than waste squad space and money on the off chance that we need Lingard.

What a message this sends out about raising standards. You can be this poor and no worries, you still get paid

 What is this nonsense? The guy is notoriously unproductive.

It’s almost charity at this point. Unless of course we can get a transfer fee in the summer.

Imagine where we would be right now without idiotic moves like this one. Our CEO and his cronies are imbecilic village idiots. Ole is doing well in spite of them, not because of anything they have done.

Tragic stupidity

They won’t want to lose him for free, he could have spoke to clubs from tomorrow

He’s obviously for sale, the club rightly want a fee for him

The club might be better cutting their losses, and given their previous record of selling the deadwood, I have absolutely no faith they will fare any better with Lingard this summer.

We will likely be in the same situation next December.

It would be acceptable if there is a gentlemen's agreement between the club and the player that he will sign for another club by summer, even that means he is taking wage cut. But if not, then this is a big feck up, and he will end up running out the contract for another year.
