Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

If the price was £70m for either Sancho, or Grealish, who would people go for?

I'll admit I've been thinking about Grealish in our team more and more and it excites me. He'd be a talisman for us wherever he plays.

It’s Grealish for me, I would love to see a player with that kind of decision making in our final third.

70 million for Sancho, I can see that happening but Villa will want in excess of 100 million for Grealish.

We will sign Sancho, I'm convinced of it.

At this point it would be a good summer if we signed one of Sancho, Kane or Grealish, with a couple of smaller transfers alongside. Either one of them improves us massively.

You love to see it

This loss mirrors their expectations they gave out at the end of the last year. It is entirely down to a massive loss of match day revenue due to an empty stadium as a result of Covid. This loss has nothing to do with lack of sporting success or general mismanagement.

Being happy (this is not solely about Dortmund but other clubs aswell) about supporters being unable to see their favourite team in person as a consequence of a global health crisis that up to this point claimed more than 3 Mil. lives is quite frankly a disgusting attitude to have.

Well they kept him, he sulked for half a season to the point they barely made top 4 and are now selling him at 20 percent off.
At least they stuck it to big, bad Utd.

Pinning Dortmunds overall subpar league performance on Sancho is pretty hilarious. Yes, his form dipped in the first season half (as was the case with 90% of the squad), but he still ended up scoring 16 goals and 20 assists in 38 appearances (less than 3.000 minutes total).

His return to form was instrumental for them winning the first silver ware in 4 years and finishing in the Top 4. Keeping him turned out to be clearly beneficial for them.

The lowering of the price was always expected unless Covid would magically disappear.

I was sure of it also but Dortmund have just started trying to get a bidding war going and are mentioning figures around £100m again, which in a summer where no one wants to spend any money, isn't going to happen. Reports in Germany are that he could stay one more year if a big bid doesn't come in.

We could be £10-20m apart again and might just leave it at that, depends what type of addons.

I think Dortmund only loses if they keep him another year because if I were Sancho, why wouldn't I sit out my contract in this case and get a fat signing on bonus in a year's time?

 Talk about taking things way too seriously. I thought German clubs loved bantz

The point is that they don't want or need to sell him so if they don't sell them they do not 'lose'.
How did they win though? An unhappy star contributed to a mediocre season and when we were told 120m was reasonable, because every top club would be flush with cash this summer, its now down to 90m odd.
They are now in a worse position in every way this summer.
Im struggling to think of a win here that simply isnt we kept him because nothing else really worked out for them. They should have taken the 90m and invested it. When they do sell to us I guarentee they will have a better year than last season because they wont have a star player that checked out until Christmas.

He's right though, that was a stupid thing to say all things considered
No it wasn't. It's just pulling one's leg and seemingly the popular phrase to do it with these days.

"All things considered". Maybe you're considering too many things.

It wasnt always expected. The argument is burned into my brain. We were constantly told that the market would be back to normal and there would be a host of clubs bidding 120m for him.

Have not watched him live but from videos he doesn't look very fast. Can anyone summarise his game compared to EPL wingers such as Rashford, Sterling etc?

Not as fast as Rashford or James but i´m sure he is fast enough for it to not be a problem.

He's technically much more gifted than either of them in terms of ball control, dribbling and ability in tight spaces. He's also much more of a playmaker/creative outlet than either of them - more in the mould of a Hazard or Ribery. On the other hand he doesn't have Rashford's pace or directness or shooting power. And I'd say that Sterling has by far the best movement of the three.

All in all they're very different players but Sancho would be my pick of the three due to the quality of his decision making, passing ability and ability in tight spaces.

Ok. Thanks for the replies. So a bit similar to mahrez then?
Again, I'd say he's much more creative and gifted as a passer than Mahrez. But that would be a closer comparison than the other two, for sure.

I think Ribery is about right, I've also seen some compare him to Nasri, though I think style wise, Nasri is more similar to Foden.

That is one way to summarize the season...

Another way of putting it (and at least as correct as your interpretation) would be: A young player was dragged down by the general miserable state of his team, fought back his form, took on more responsibility and started to be a leader in the team (did more work defensively, appeared a bit more professional than at the start of the season) and finally ensured that his team wins the cup.

Sounds a lot better for Dortmund, doesn't it?

I still think it is fair to expect him to transfer this summer, but saying that Dortmund lost something because he stayed is just wrong.

His head wasnt in it. The manager himself said the transfer saga took a toll on him
It cab be dressed up anyway to suit but sometines the simplest answer is the truth

The problem with united is, when another team is interested they seem to botch up the deal.

Name the last time it happened.

Maguire, Sanchez, Fred were all signed while City were involved. DvB was regularly linked with top clubs and he plays for us now.

It's like people make this stuff as some sort of coping mechanism incase we miss out.

Regulion.
We didn't botch the deal, we didn't want Madrid to have a paltry release clause, and rightly so.
Haaland and Bellingham
We put in fair offers for both players but both joined Dortmund in favour of their development, pretty sure even Raiola or Haaland said as much in an interview. You can't just claim any player we missed out on was a deal botched on our part, sometimes they just have a more enticing offer.

Well the same applies for Sanchez, Fred and Maguire, where we had to pay way over the odds to get each of those signings.

City said no thanks we are not paying those fees and wages.

Oh don't worry he will come up with an excuse to say why we weren't actually interested in them.

I'll give you Halaand, but we were never going to be interested in Bellingham at the prices quoted and his supposed wage demands. He would have completely disrupted the structure of the club.

Not having it with Regulion. Similarly with Halaand we backed off due to release clause/buy back. That isn't botching the deal, that's sensible.

Still waiting on your list of transfers we "botched".

Arjen Robben

I don't get the sourness to Dortmund. They have a price and aren't playing games here. It's dead simple for us if we want him pay, if we waste another summer on a price, we can only blame ourselves. Got feck all to do with Dortmund taking a piss.

Have you forgotten the little "enjoy the Europa" league comment when we bought Mkhitaryan from them?

@b82REZ

Truth is, it's hard to determine how/why transfers ended as we have to rely on the press who I'm sure will have added their own take on things.

One could argue that we botched the Sanchez transfer as he didn't turn out too well and City would have been welcome to him

Arjen Robben

Exactly. 20 years a go.

Fergie oversaw more "botched" transfers than any of our subsequent managers. If anything we've been far more decisive and aggressive in the market over the last 5 years than we have been since the late 90s/early 00s.
