Is Harry Maguire being a worldwide punchline deserved?

A 100%.

His arrogant statements making deserve that, can't even feel sorry for him when he's said stuff like that.

No. He's a solid but limited central defender, England regular. Were he playing for another club he'd not be getting the level of scrutiny and abuse he gets at United.

Absolutely yes. Does and says all the wrong things. Epitome of poor spending of the post SAF era.

If they are active on the forums, who cares. If one of us says something stupid, we'll be mocked for it. People in this country are punished because they weren't born in the right area or to the right family, people struggle with serious issues every day, being mocked because you don't do a good job at your extremely high paying job isn't really a big issue, or an issue at all. Who woukdnt swap places with maguire, and get the abuse and not have to suffer through our own problems. Like I said direct abuse is too far, but criticism or memes on a forum aren't a big deal.

They're also not so called millionaires, they definitely are millionaires, well unless maguire is as bad with money as he is at defending

No, seriously though, that's just a tradeoff that comes with being famous, if you're in the spotlight you'll take more stick for mistakes or stupid actions, but on the other hand you make a ton of money and get special treatment because you're good at kicking a ball
You’re a mad one

It just reminds me of Fellaini, Smalling, Young, Rooney, Pogba, Valencia and a few others. We tend to turn on our own players just to get them out of the club.

We've been protesting the owners for nearly 20 years actively at games and protests and not been able to get rid of them. I think you overestimate the power of words on redcafe

The cafe is generally moderated and doubt abuse will be condoned here.

Let's not be a hypocrite. If he's playing for city, Chelsea, Liverpool or even Hotspur we'd be having a field day every week laughing at him.

He could have shut up and just focus on his game instead of cupping his ear banging his Kong aint got shit on me attitude.

You talk the talk you better walk the walk

If he can't handle it. Retire. He's solid financially for this lifetime. We owe him shit. If he can't handle the pressure and doesnt even try to train harder to fix his glaring error then yes he deserves all this meme.

We've had youth players playing on 3000 per week without clear future of whether he'll gonna make it in the pro or get dumped. I'd rather pity them then Maguire.

Pound for pound he’s one of the biggest flops in recent times, playing in a position that highlights all mistakes, at a club that is under more scrutiny than any other. He’s the perfect meme footballer really.
The crown for meme footballer belongs to Lukaku and no one else can take that.

blood sucking leaches Like glazers aren’t the same as individual players whose performances are directly correlated to their confidence

Regardless of how good or bad Harry is the negative sentiment does effect him. Whether or not it should r or shouldn’t is a different question but right now he’s our player and it does

To be fair some of errors he’s made last season was at comical level.

It’s not funny. Just because Maguire earns a lot more than you, you have right to abuse him? What’s wrong with you? You can make efforts to earn as much as him if you have talent on anything and work hard to fulfill your potential. If that happens, does anyone earn the right to abuse you? You have been ridiculing yourself.

Yeah, that's hilarious. Not because he's our player and I hate our players but because he genuinely thinks he's better than he is and the misalignment is of cosmic proportions.
Yeah so hilarious. Lovely fans we have

It's his lack of self assessment (at least publicly) that makes it worse. If he at least came across as someone who acknowledged poor performances etc. then he may be likeable and people would support him, instead he says he's great so it sets him up to fall

In a lot of ways, yes. He's the most expensive defender ever and is both very limited and error prone. It isn't like he was great for Leicester and then got a bad case of the yips, it was always absurd to pay even half that fee. That who situation is a joke.

Does he personally deserve the humiliation? I don't know. The fact he cupped his ears after scoring against Albania is hardly evidence enough that he's a total tool, I think some people use that as an excuse to give him abuse because they dislike him for being an awful signing.

Expensive and/or poor players with a relatively known profile all become memes.

Things don't stop being funny just because they are annexed/have some sort of connection to the words "manchester united"

"Upamaguire" was funny. It is what it is.

Same goes for Shaw last season. Or Chelsea’s attackers ( or the football club) this season.

Jokes consistently fly about Luke Shaw's supposed weight/appetite.

Chelsea get's cooked everyday. Mudryk is referred to as "ghost of kiev". I've seen countless "fail compilations" for Kai Havertz.

Flops had always been laughed at. I remember 'Mai Dire Gol' who was a popular Italian sarcastic TV football show back when the Serie A was at its pinnacle. They used to have a slot dedicated to il bidoni del calcio (ie the garbage bins of football). Maguire makes the perfect bidone ie little talent, giant ego, thin skin and an insistence to justify what can't be justified.

.
Oh they absolutely do unless Manchester United is simply ‘word’s’ to you which wouldnt be surprising I suppose.

Do you also look back every now and then on Vidic’s mistake vs Torres or Rio’s vs Bellamy and have a right chuckle? Or maybe our 7-0 defeat is your kind of comedy gold?

Nowhere near the same degree. Also, who the feck watches countless fail compilations of Kai Havertz!?

I will reply to this because it’s a contribution to a conversation I’m involved in.

Embarrassing sympathy parades are necessary at this point because we don’t keep undermining the confidence of our own players and still expect them to deliver on match days when needed.
You call it pressure but I call it unnecessarily manufactured pressure. It’s pressurised enough playing for United but your fan’s turning on you? Go figure.

Did you have that same feeling when Paul Pogba played for us? Because for him the abuse was miles worse.

They are elite level athletes at the pinnacle of their sport. If people on Twitter makes memes/fail montages out of them undermines their confidence so much that they can’t ever perform, then they weren’t ever going to be successful anyways here. It’s the way high level competition works. You or other fans giving Maguire some pity applause and encouragement like he’s a young kid learning the game for the first time isn’t going to help anything

So what if they aren’t going to be successful here? Tons of footballers don’t make it at United and tons more won’t. Di Maria didn’t. Sanchez didn’t. It’s part of the game.

I think many confuse calling absurd levels of mockery and ridicule with acceptance (of performances). If it were up to me, I’d sell Maguire. At the same time, I don’t think the extent of vilification and ridicule is right. I’m surprised any level headed adult who sees them as human beings does.

Its the social media generation though, creating dumpster fire content for the lowest common denominator for clicks and likes. Can’t really do anything about it as it’s the new norm.

Adults who choose to spend their time abusing someone from behind the anonymous safety of their keyboards are pathetic. This kind of behaviour is literally what we raise our children not to do.

The problem, is his ego, sure be confident if your a baller but you've been dropped, work hard instead of spouting rubbish that you don't need to prove yourself, you'd never hear Keano, Scholes, Rooney, Bruce etc etc etc saying thst.

He's not as bad as is made out half the time (he is the other half) but be humble until your the best, then by all means puff your chest, let your football do the talking.

No one deserves that much criticism, but he is not helping himself with the kind of person he looks to be, he looks very arrogant at everything he does. I don't think he is quite likeable as a person within the squad either.

He'll be gone this summer anyway so we can justify all the piss taking a little more easily come September.

We all know people who describe premier league footballers as crap.
They're probably equally dim in other areas of their life too.

He tries to project confidence and leadership, when frankly he should keep his mouth shut until he learns to play football. Defenders make mistakes, but not one defender has brought this much nervous energy into a defense since I've been watching United, and then tried to pretend he's rather good at what he does.

The internet will always be a tad too harsh, but most of it is frankly very deserved.

Maguire is obviously a decent player, you don't get as many England caps as he does by being crap.

It's just some football fans cannot actively think for themselves and get caught in the meme hype and jump on board a wagon like sheep.

It's even worse when it's fans of the club the player plays for.

We've seen it with plenty of United players, Lukaku, Shaw, McT, but bizarrely other players such as VDB get away with it.
Just a bizarre sub culture in football.

Christ there's some boring folk in here. We'd have to remove so many chants and so much fun in football if you can't take the piss out of people.

He absolutely deserves it and he doesn't help himself. He's not bring treated any differently to hundreds of other PL flops over the years.

He's nowhere near as bad as people make him out to be.

No footballer 'deserves' to be a world-wide punchline. Being bad at football isn't a moral failing. Yes his interviews could have been better judged but all he's done really is resolutely defend himself.

However, that's life; he's a grown man and I'm sure he can deal with it. When he leaves United and goes elsewhere the heat will go out of it and he'll be seen for what he is, a solid PL-level CB for a club that doesn't demand as much from that position. It's a shame for his International career though, as he's always been pretty good for England.

Almost 40 years later a bad pass back to the keeper is still called a Jesper Olsen in Denmark.
When you do comically bad mistakes it will get noticed.
Harry was absolutely abysmal over quite a span and even now when he is actually playing decent he will still be unlucky and score an own goal (which wasnt his fault at all).
Him being the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world will obviously draw attention.
That combined with his daft interviews and you have a recipe for online mocking.

I think its way over the top and we as United fans shouldnt join in.

Maguire is obviously a decent player, you don't get as many England caps as he does by being crap.

Honestly, I don't understand this argument at all. There's a dearth of decent English CBs plus the standard of 90% of all international matches is Championship level.

he’s better than some defender but not as good as other defenders. that’s enough reason alone for him, and his family, the be hounded until the ends of the earth. i’m not sure if he has children, but if he does, they should have dog shit thrown at them every day on their way to school by any adults that pass them. all sounds well and good, but do you know the last footballer that was treated the same way? that’s right; jesus christ.

No, it’s ridiculous. He needs taking out of the club for his own good, and his interviews are a little defensive, but the narrative surrounding him is childish and the absolute pits of footballing discourse.
