Film Is Gladiator the best film this century? | Yes

Inception, Spirited Away, The Dark Knight, Amelie, Mulholland Drive, Wall-E, Life Aquatic, Isle of Dogs.
I think the first half of WALL-E is 10/10 stuff. The second half, whilst still good, was more a 7/10. That first half is still the best thing Pixar has ever produced.

A few spring to mind for different reasons, mainly related to production techniques, story, and execution.

City of God
Inglorious Basterds
Collateral
Memento
Kill Bill (1&2)
Traffic
The Sea Inside
The Prestige
Amores Perros
21 Grams
The Constant Gardener
Inception
Man of Steel
Babel
The Revenant
Man of steel?!

This garbage beat Fellowship to best picture.

Romper Stomper is pure Crowe aggression, recommended.
Romper Stomper is a great film, but more of a cult classic. The soundtrack is something else.

Shoddy, mawkish propaganda piece. Romans wanted to restore the republic, eh? That movie had nothing to do with ancient rome.
That part was kind of funny. Never heard of Marcus Aurelius wanting to restore democracy.

There will be blood is probably the one film I have watched in the last 20 years that really stuck with me. Nothing has really come close.

Werckmeister Harmonies
There Will be Blood
Dogville

Gladiator was a terrible film.

i’m with you there, col, but that’s largely because i’m such a history buff, that i couldn’t look past the inconsistencies. i’ve been to rome, the coliseum is all old and crumbling, scaffolding all around it, no floor on the inside, no hint of a lion.

yet in the film, is gleaming and has a floor and a lion and stuff. it’s like they think we’re idiots.

There Will be Blood was fantastic and that scene with the priest at the end was something else, a really disturbing piece of cinema.

Not as good as Gladiator though.

It’s miles better. A completely different level of filmmaking. There will be Blood is about as good as filmmaking gets. Gladiator is a nice blockbuster, that’s it.

I watched a documentary about Gladiators prior to seeing the film. There were so many historical inaccuracies so as to make the film unwatchable.

My personal pick will always be Children Of Men. It’s the one film that really captures the 21st century.
Because it looks really great but the plot is boring and predictable?

You find the plot boring and predictable?!
Somewhat. And it lacked subtlety for my taste. I like the movie, though. Just wouldn’t classify it as a masterpiece or something like that. The one area it really manages to stand out in is the cinematography. Which is truly brilliant work from Lubezki.

I find it hard to comprehend how you can be bored through the beginning of that film, it's just fecking mesmerizing. Film-making in its purest form.

He was just grunting and bashing things from what I remember. There were three of us watching it and one started to give out and was giving off this is shit vibes so that could have affected me as I'm a bit susceptible that way.

I could give it a go again on my own.

fellowship of the ring

Boring movie - scenery looks great, but the story lacks substance and the acting is awful. It feels to me like they go from adventure to adventure with no story ark thus rendering it a long movie about walking. Big fan of Tolkien's books but this was not it

The dystopian plot of people not able to have children and Clive Owen arc of finally believing in something again is used to highlight the end of history era we are currently living in.

It’s been since I’ve watched it but doesn’t he break his leg and then get himself out of the hole and then crawl for miles on his own back to reach safety.

Imo it’s a good introduction to the main character and the will power he has.

You’re point being?

I would recommend you to do so. It's masterful filmmaking, and it serves a purpose in building the character.

Oh god it is so much better than Gladiator (and I like Gladiator) - it's a masterpiece and one of the great American movies of the modern era.

It's hard to find a lot of films where the level of acting from the main characters is absolutely top class.

Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielson, Oliver Stone, Richard Harris, Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, the Tiger, upper body of the Amazonian were all just brilliant.

Not the best film ever. Also not a terrible film like some caf hipsters are saying. Thought it was great fun if laughably inaccurate. Though I realise they were going for Hollywood blockbuster, not documentary.

Why on earth is Ridley Scott making a Gladiator sequel after all these years?!
