In terms of Sunday night BBC One films is up there with the best. I have it in Ridley all time top 3 and it’s the last war film I can remember that really felt on a grand scale. The opening battle scene is work of art. Also 2000 era Russel Crow would snap the necks of those little hairy feet fellas from the nerd books.

Although I’ve got very high hopes for Scott Napoleon film.

About Gladiator, the only thing I dislike is the distraction usage of the Zulu chants in the opening battle scene.

I was going to say that, if you put it to a vote out of every film in that period, a Lord of the Rings film would win, but it probably wouldn't because I think the votes would be near enough evenly split over three choices so they'd all suffer from the trilogy being so good as a whole.

I think something like The Dark Knight would win if there was a poll done on some big platform because, unlike the LOTR trilogy, that one was the standout. Personally, I always preferred Batman Begins over it, but TDK was THE movie everyone was talking about, not just comic fans.

Gets more credit than it deserves because of Ledger’s death.

Preferred Begins myself too.

Joaquin Phoenix gives a thumbs up to signify that he wishes for Russell Crowe NOT to die, when in real life the thumbs up would have meant he was giving the go ahead for him to be executed. They also had siege equipment being used in a land battle where their enemy would be coming through dense forest anyway.

But, most damning of all was the use of modern English in the film instead of Latin. Even the character of Maximus, who is meant to be Spanish, never once complained in Spanish about referees being biased against Barcelona and stopping them from winning ten titles in a row.

Also, Joaquin means emperor in Spanish.

I enjoyed RotK until they were saved by the ghost people. Just felt cheap. I appreciate it’s based on books but after such a big build up it just felt a bit meh at that point.
Reported for spoilers.

Very good film, well cast/directed/acted. But probably a bit overrated when viewed among the pantheon of the greats.

The Departed and Gladiator suck arse. Surely There Will Be Blood and Moonlight are both better shouts for film of the century.

The Departed is far from Marty's best film, and it was a weird Oscar win, but your bar must be exceptionally high if you think that and Gladiator "suck arse".

No. I didn't even think it was the best film of that year. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memento and Traffic were all better. Oh and also Bring it On

Which greats this century?

A few spring to mind for different reasons, mainly related to production techniques, story, and execution.

City of God
Inglorious Basterds
Collateral
Memento
Kill Bill (1&2)
Traffic
The Sea Inside
The Prestige
Amores Perros
21 Grams
The Constant Gardener
Inception
Man of Steel
Babel
The Revenant

The Departed was just dull for me. Contrived and uninteresting. I watched Gladiator the other week and it was fun but fun in a silly way. Both films were way too long for what they delivered.

It was ok but I wouldn't put it in the film of the century discussion.

Yeah most wouldn't have it anywhere near such a list. I actually view it as more of a Nolan film than Snyder's, since he was the diver of this iteration of the story and the final edit has all the hallmarks of Nolan's structure (storytelling in fractured timelines etc).

Definitely, WB were desperate for him to take the reigns but he wasn't interested. It does have some of his hallmarks but also some really dumb writing.

No, Fast and the furious 10 part 3 will be... Or in reality Id be hard pressed to find just one that marks the greatest of the 21st century. Mulholland Drive, Mad Max Fury Road, American Psycho, Oldboy, Donnie Darko, Sicario, Children of men, The raid, Hot Fuzz, and yes even Gladiator were all great watches. But if I had to name just one movie, it be something that almost no one will agree with me on. The Hateful Eight. It's a perfect marriage of Reservoir dogs and The thing. The cast, the score, the cinematography, the setting, the atmosphere, the dialogue is all just brilliant.

Still excellent blockbuster fun and it has held up well over the years.

I disliked The Departed and There Will Be Blood. Overacting nonsense from Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis made them both really annoying to watch. Plus Di Caprio still looked like he was too young to drive.
