Interstellar | SPOILERS! | Keep out unless you've seen it

Good film.

Not his best and not the best this year, but visually stunning and most definitely one that makes you think about the planet and our future.

Just came back from seeing it.. Was good, really interesting, bit boring at times but good overall. Not amazing or a 10/10 movie or anything like that, though. Went a bit too far at one point imo but thats probably just my opinion on what is possible and what isn't.
Brilliant visually though, for sure.

So basically, Inception part 2?

2001 lite, thought it was ok but fell short behind the very best the genre has to offer.

Dunno, almost every Nolan movie I watch peters out beyond the 90 minutes mark or so and picks up at the very end. Guess it's intentionally designed to add a more escalating dramatic effect in the movie's climax. Was the same with Insomnia, TDKR, the 3rd dream level in Inception. The first hour or so was brilliant, so many possibilities though somehow I feel disappointed he didn't fully explore the vastness of our universe and edged more towards cheesy rhetoric and staple sci fi gimmickry. Great eye-candy but scientifically and philosophically, not very engaging overall. Also the storytelling left something to be desired, one could sense most of the audience struggling to digest the plot as it became a bit more intricate. Realism in the human emotions was another letdown - you couldn't always see the desperation and panic on people faces considering our planet was going to end. Bit like automatons at times.

Not as good as some of his other works I reckon, and not very though provoking. Sci fi for the masses but not exactly. 6.5/10.

Kind of OT but this movie makes a complete mockery of the IMDB rating system (if we needed anymore proof that it's full of shills). It had thousands of 10/10 reviews before it was even released.

The rating will decrease when people who have watched the movie will start voting.

So far, only fanboys have voted (well at-least the majority of votes are from them) and Nolan really has a lot of them. No idea, why is allowed to vote before the movie has been released though.

I think some media critics, studio personnel, journos and a few common folks with IMDB access are allowed to rate it based on pre-screeners of the film at select screens, film festivals etc. The same happened with TDKR and a lot of other bigger budget movies IIRC. Plenty start off around 10 before the actual release as a PR stunt by studios and settle down in the 7 to 8+ mark once a variety of people start voting.

Ah, yes, the 'fanboys'.
Who else vote a movie without actually being released? There's no way that 20k people have watched it prior its official release.

And why all Nolan' movies start 9+ but then the grade lowers. And of course he has a lot of fanboys, otherwise people wouldn't rate 1/10 the Godfather just for The Dark Knight to surpass it.

 people are so fecking sad

I just want them to do a full length documentary about the black hole, don't really care about the rest.

Just saw this, and pissed myself laughing apart from a small stretch of about 8 minutes the rest of the movie is wank. I'd rather watch Armageddon or Gravity. Neither of which are particularly good either. Hopefully Nightcrawler will be better.
Holy crap, it was that bad ?

I mean I know Nolan lately being just a bit overrated but I would never even think that his movie would have Armageddon's level of nonsense.

I was hoping from the early reviews this would be one of those where some say it's a masterpiece while others call it terrible. At least then it would be interesting and you've got something to talk about. Most worrying is how many are just saying 'meh'.

I thought it was phenomenal.

I heard people actually crying in my cinema.

Seen Interstellar and Nightcrawler in the space of five days. Two fecking brilliant movies!

It depends. Typical Nolan movie with regards to cardboard characters and the over the top seriousness, in that regard I prefer Armageddon. Honestly I thought it was frightful. It looks good but that doesn't justify going to see it ,I'm afraid this will be the last time I put money in Mr. Nolan's pocket for a long time. You would be better off watching 'Contact' or 'Moon' if you want a sci fi movie. I have been critical of Nolan on these boards before, earlier I said he wasn't some film messiah and he was just a better than average blockbuster director, now I begin to doubt even that. However form your own opinion. Some in the audience complained that it was hard to understand McConaughey as well (although I didn't have that problem)

If you prefer Armageddon to anything I can't take your opinion seriously. I've seen Interstellar. It may not be the classic it was aiming to be, but it is 100 times the film Armageddon is.

Will do. Mega Thanks for that insight.

It would be awesomely cool if Interstellar could capture 'Contact's' atmosphere of discovery and adventure. Jodie Foster had charm and her character was extremely likeable. 'Moon' was claustrophobic, serious but in the same time really entertaining in an intelligent way. There just was a right balance in these movies.

If Nolan will get too pompous maybe a little wave of criticism will make him pay attention to characters with more distance and self awareness in future, hopefully.

I'm going to watch it now just so I can argue in this thread about how awful/mind-blowing it is.

To be honest when I saw Nolan's first Batman I was confused if he's serious with the pitch of his voice or maybe finally found some sense of humor in him.

It just doesn't look that interesting to me. I love Sci Fi usually but it just comes across as if it'll be 3 hours of nothing in particular.

I don't get this Armageddon hate. It was a time pass popcorn movie. Did not claim or live up to anything else. Maybe Haddock's opinion was this movie fails to live up to the lofty epic proportions and ends up as a bad space movie.

Anyway I'm watching this in a couple of hours. Will form my own opinions...

Heard a few tears in my cinema as well. The bookshelf scene at the end was as good and emotion provoking a scene I can remember from any movie I've ever seen.

Personally I think the first and last hour was brilliant. The story was so extensive in its time line that they couldn't have rushed the middle bit which gives he movie it's extended running time. Matt Mc is fantastic. Anyone not taking him seriously need to watch this and Dallas Buyers Club.

Armageddon is a pile of crap, at least it's self aware. You don't have to take my opinion seriously, you do a mind of your own.
Well... even though there's a bit of comic relief in Armageddon with Buscemi's (terrible) character notably, it's not exactly a tongue in cheek blockbuster like Battleship for example. It actually, for large parts of the movie, takes itself incredibly seriously. Now don't get me wrong, I like Armageddon for the pile of crap it is, but I don't think the depiction you're making of it is accurate. Also, I like it because it's terrible and it's easy shitty viewing to disconnect your brain, but it is a terrible movie, first and foremost.

I loved Armageddon. I don't care what anyone says, it's more fun to train drillers to be Astronauts than it is to train Astronauts to be drillers.

It is a epic. It's a looong movie. It's a heavy movie. It gave me a big headache. I loved it.

Fact is you need to watch some Nat Geo or read some Sci-Fi to get a heads up. Quite a heavy movie both emotionally and intellectually. Intro was OK, but picks up pace, once they reach space. Visuals are spectacular. The emotional content takes priority over the visual spectacle. A very understated climax which kind of looks rushed.

Overall: 8.5/10

I like that film, it's just 2 hours of good fun.

It was alright. B, B-. The thing about Nolan is that he can't really tell stories that you can connect to emotionally, so he stacks the deck by putting very talented actors into his cold, underwritten roles and by amping up the score to 11 (to the point where I couldn't even hear dialogue sometimes) but they can only do so much and it's still not a satisfying story about a human that you can connect to. Some great set pieces in the middle, some sci-fi wankery at the end.

You can see the tape and chewing gum that holds the screenplay together at some points.

I would say that Memento, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight all prove these statements incorrect. Or rather, our opinions differ very much on these films.
