Could you give a quick ideology tutorial to an ignorant Yank - where do the parties fall in political ideology?

Bjp is a rightwing party who took inspiration from Mussolini's Italian facists.

TMC is a breakaway from the Indian national congress (INC is a left of centre party who was one of the first parties during independence),
TMC is currently going down the Bengali nationalist path as a way to counter the religious and cultural influence of BJP and north India.

Damn. Outright, overt espousing of fascism or more muted? How intertwined is religion into the BJP?

@berbatrick posted this earlier. A long read, from an explicitly left-wing perspective, very very good -https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/3144-india-liberal-democracy-and-the-extreme-right

For me the parallels with the Muslim Brotherhood franchises of the Middle East (especially Turkey’s AKP) and some forms of right-wing Zionism are incredibly striking. Religious identity as totality, incorporating all realms of public life (political, cultural, devotional, etc.)

Not from Delhi. @anant , @crappycraperson, @RedMachine03 can give a better assessment of the situation in Delhi

Things are still horrible in Delhi. Spent yesterday trying to find Oxygen and ICU bed for a friend who need it for his cousins. Just absolute bizarre to live in a society where people are travelling 100-150 kms to find a hospital bed or travelling with cylinders to get it filled with oxygen from one place to another. To top it off, critical medicines like steroids have also run out at most local stores and even for that you have to call a gazillion numbers to get a contact.

Sorry don't agree.

Overall Mamata Banerjee's policies are similar to the CPIM left coalition which is more left than a socialist government.

In addition, she has a near complete domination amongst the Muslim minority vote. In terms of adivasis and other backward classes she has done sect or population specific projects.

Also she has introduced welfare schemes and some cash benefits via unemployment benefit scheme/student scheme/rural women scheme/health card etc, which has prevented the unification of the majority Hindu vote against her. This is a prime reason for her victory today.

The Bengali nationalist face was used only for the elections to build a narrative of Bengals daughter counters the Gujarati / North Indian BJP with all their might.

In regular governance it is similar to the communist rule with nationalism not being prominent at all.

There is a lot of corruption and political violence and lawlessness, and also an autocratic tendency to snuff out any opposition. I hope these improve markedly in her new term.

Groovy. Thanks for this, I missed it earlier.

This might very well be true and its fecking tragic if it is but I'll ask you to refrain from posting "news" from BJP handles. 9/10 times it is propaganda.

It could be fake again. But if true, this is nothing considering Bengal's history of political violence. If true, I do hope Mamata shows a bigger heart this time and change her waya and nip violence in the bud. Don't be a copycat of the BJP who instigated violence after losing the Delhi elections last year.

Anyway, for the uninitiated,

I can differentiate between what is propaganda and what isn't.

Maybe this will satisfy you

I wonder what will be the final report of this considering West Bengal police knows who is power for next 5 years.

Don't worry too much Arnab Goswami will shout "the nation wants to know" in prime time. Then the CBI, NIA, ED, CRPF, CISF Heck even the EC will intervene in no time. Home Minister won't let it reach to the point of Delhi Riots because it's his side that is the receiving end this time. So don't fret too much.

Fascists fighting fascists. What could go wrong.
Run an extremely divisive, high pitched, polarized and communal election campaign and then flail arms once the inevitable violence erupts.

I really feel sorry for the pawns and foot soldiers because this is exactly what BJP desires and accounts for. Shame that TMC also prove themselves to be not much better.

Where do you and others (I am not tagging the other fellow because I've no intention to engage with clueless guys like him), class people like me?

You know what happened to us. What exactly was our fault? We're going to lose a significant amount of money simply because the goons saw it fit to loot as they please. And now they are openly doing what they know best.

Or am I a fascist too? Or is it rumour mongering?

Unless one's tail is on fire, they don't realize fire is hot.

Yes mate I've been on the receiving end for the last 4 years. And I don't even vote BJP.

Come off the high horse and smell the shit

I feel sorry for you. I have a good friend who is from bengal, and has similar experience as you. He cannot stand TMC after the atrocities he has faced because of him.

Sadly, I don't see anything change in Bengal. Bjp have their flaws but so does party like TMC.

Anyways the takeaway for me from this election is not BJP losing or TMC winning , it is how far Congress have fallen. Each day I wish Congress returns with a new face and ends this BJP dominance.

He isn't worth responding to. He casually mentioned it's normal for Bengal and then went on a rant on something else entirely. Then on report of two women being gang raped , he is still rambling about BJP. Put him on ignore and move on.

Congress didn't open their account in Bengal. Lost in Assam even after colluding with AIUDF ( which puts it so called secular party credential put to rest finally). Was the main reason why RJD lost Bihar election. Was given less seats in Tamil Nadu and lost Kerala where they sweeped lok sabha elections.

So I guess Congress is well and truly finished for good period now if it cant do well in states which aren't part of hindi heartland then I struggle to see how they will form any future Indian government. Without decent opposition, BJP autocratic rule will just ruin this country.

Not you, of course ffs. Do I need to specify people who are fighting over there are nothing but fascists?

Regarding your situation, I have already told you there are only 2 ways out of it.

THERE IS NO WAY OUT OF IT. People are currently dying and being attacked because of who they supported.

Please understand that when you guys casually talk even regarding the violence and retribution posts as if they are nothing, it physically makes me ill.

I have bled on the road.

None of you have set foot ever in Bengals rural areas where peoole are currently dying.

Go on with your philosophy and armchair rhetorics but at least spare the posts where you can see women being dragged and beaten.

You guys won. Enough materials available on the web to gloat about and post in this thread.

Leave these posts alone!

Still not getting the point i am saying? Bengal under 34 years rule of the Communist and Left rule was a violent one. Violence is part and parcel of that phase. The TMC crushed the left and continued the cycle of violence on the left such that they are done and dusted. They flocked to the BJP en masse this election.

Ergo, political violence is the norm rather than exception for Bengal. Just because we can see it now through twitter doesn't mean it wasn't happening in the past. So it is the norm/normal for West Bengal.

Now, could you not get the irony that the BJP are now complaining about violence now? Where were they after the Delhi elections when vendetta was carried out right in the heart of the capital, where the likes of Kapil Mishra were allowed to instigate violence with impunity? Is "goli maro goli maro" an innocuous chant. The SC hearings are going on right now.

You might call it rambling, but my point is that it is goons vs goons vs goons. What comes around goes around. And that is why I said Mamata should have a bigger heart and end the cycle of violence. And not go the BJP way!!!

And I sincerely hope it doesn't devolve into chaos, there is already too much violence going on during that EIGHT phase election. Jeez 8 phase?

Sorry to be the guy to tell you this, but I'm quite sure that even BJP winning wouldn't have gotten you the land back. Instead of a mosque, they would have built a temple there or something.

TMC may be as bad as BJP in a lot of things, but people needed BJP to start losing elections so that those cnuts open their eyes and actually do some work.

You just went down in my esteem. If you guys can live with saying "it's expected" to posts of violence, I don't want to be associated with people with this line of thought.

If the BJP had won and was doing this to the TMC I would have been raising hell on twitter and condoning it here.

But you or the others can't see the hypocrisy in the position of people who are saying "it's business as usual".

I'm tired and out of here.

Nobody won!
I have been kicked by Militants and slapped by the Security forces when they were hunting each other because we live in a "disturbed area". You know the drill. AFSPA!!
So it has made very numb to violence between goons in general and sorry if any of my comments are inappropriate.
But those violent times are long gone for us now and it will be for you too. So stay strong brother.

I sincerely hope better peaceful times ahead for West Bengal.

Reread the post. When the feck did I say that what TMC is doing is fine?

All I'm saying is if the land was what you were concerned with, you weren't getting it back anyway most likely.

Also, violence in WB was expected (not right, mind) especially after the kind of campaigning TMC and especially BJP did. It was the same in Delhi as well, when they made the elections too feisty which ultimately resulted in Riots.

Yeah, still doesn't explain that your first responses to reports of violence and gangrapes are - its expected and / or those are false rumours.

Stop moving the goalposts guys.

I'm out. No desire to engage further.

From Gujarat to Delhi to West Bengal, when people in power decide to play the murder games, it is just the vulnerable public that take the brunt.
The courts should come hard on TMC to take proper action. Ignoring such acts is an open support to autocracy

It's always the innocent who get crushed. Mob rule is encouraged by politicians who doesn't get involved physically. Wasn't Modi the Chief Minister when the massacre took place in Gujrat? Nothing happened to him and nothing will happen to Mamta. This is why it repeats all the time.

TMC needs to rise above this if they want to emerge as a national player and being a part of the anti-BJP coalition. We have seen Shiv Sena do a complete makeover of its image and seen a shift of their ideology. This like for like against the BJP is going to harm its national image and the so called Liberal and left-leaning section of the populace won't come to defend them. I ofcourse would vote against the BJP no matter what, but those who are confused regarding whom to vote for definitely won't like what the TMC are doing.

I feel bad for the Bengalis who have suffered through the violence. First the left, then TMC, and now the full BJP machinery. Must feel terrible having no good options to vote for and having to vote for the lesser evil.
