I thought we should have taken a chance and gotten him in the last transfer window. Caution prevailed though. If his form holds, there'll be a scramble for his signature next summer.
Is Carrick's contract till the end of this season or next? If it is this summer, has he signed a one year extension?
This season with option of another one.
I'd prefer Gundogan to the young option, give us two mid 20's CM's that can be the backbone of midfield for the next 5 years while we see what happens with our own youngsters like Goss, Fosu-Mensah and maybe even Pereira if he learns to play deeper.
Was an open goal last summer, decided not to take the risk. Now he's off to City. Gutted tbh.

Gundogan has been the player with the strongest links to City since Guardiola's announcement, quite a few outlets have been reporting on it, including Bild, Di Marzio, SkySports, the Telegraph etc. Then there was the meeting in Amsterdam between Txiki and Pep a few weeks back where Gundogan's uncle was also present.
Looks likely. For me not the same player as he was, a lot of his game was based on the physical, but will fit into a nice pep rolling the ball around the back for 90 minutes midfield I'm sure

Terrible deal from our perspective. He'll be perfect for them and would have been the ideal CM for us.
With Pep in charge and FFP seemingly eradicated, people on here better be prepared to see City sign some top tier players. A fair few of them.

Interestingly, this meeting is 'reported' to have been initiated by Ilkay's agent; not City.
Ilkay would fit into Pep's target profile and I don't think he has a problem to join a club like City (although it appears he's keener on Barcelona). However I doubt that he's willing to play Europa League or no UEFA football at all. I'd be surprised if he decides for City before that's sorted out.

I was not claiming those sources to be the most reliable, all I was pointing out is that there has been a lot of widespread talk claiming City are close to signing Gundogan. There was also a journalist for Dubai Sports who met Gundogan and said afterwards on Twitter a deal was 100% done (he also said the same for Guardiola to City), and the Mirror who are generally reliable for City (depending on the journalist) have claimed the same. There is enough evidence to suggest something is happening.
As for the meeting I also read it was initiated by Gundogan's uncle, but I do not see why that matters other than to show Gundogan clearly is interested in a move. Regarding City's league position I can see why he'd be concerned but if he wants to join City he'd be doing so with the intention of staying for longer than a season, so I do not think even if we came 5th it would be a huge deterrent due to Pep's arrival. He'd still fancy his chances of winning the Premier League, Europe can come after.
Gutted.

He has been desperate for a move to a club which offers him a bigger contract Dortmund could/would ever offer him and that guarantees CL-football for almost 3 seasons now. That's no news, at least for those who have followed him for a while.
What I question are reports about a done deal for two reasons:

- What substantiates a done deal? Have all three parties agreed, in this specific case: City and Gündogan on a contract as well as City and Dortmund on a fee?
In summer 2015 German media (SKY and Der Westen) reported a done deal regarding Gündogan's move to United. And in fact this was partially true: Contract terms of Gündogan and United were agreed. However, United wasn't willing to pay what Dortmund demanded, Dortmund didn't budge, the rest ist history (= Schweinsteiger at United, Gündogan on an unsuccesful road show through Europe that ended with another 1-year contract extension).

Will he be able to play for an English club after the UK leaves the EU in the summer? Gundogans uncle seems to have spent the last few years playing clubs off each other to get more money.
Why wouldn't he be able to? I was under the impression that leaving the EU wouldn't really make a difference to established foreign footballers.
It'll take the UK a few years to actually get out of Europe; there are gazillions of issues which have to be re-negotiated and put into law. It's not like a four weeks notice.

Interesting that City have gotten Otamendi, De Bruyne and Gundogan, all players in positions we have needed upgrades in, all players who were super highly rated in their positions, and we seemingly haven't stood in their way at all. Maybe we know they have deeper pockets/ have the Pep factor, so we don't fully bother.
