Ilkay Gündogan | Rejoins City

I remember we were in for him around 2012 during the Dortmund era? Should have got him then. Nuri Sahin was another, who never really had the same impact after he left Dortmund.

Edit : Sahin is the current Dortmund coach? FFS, how time passes.

Well yes, because there's an absolutely massive difference in what both teams need.
Every team needs Gundogan. Let's be real here. He is still one of the best midfielders in the world and would allow us to control the midfield in addition to already being a goal threat and a creator. You know Barcelona let him go for free, right? If you would be against signing Gundogan when you are aware of the players we have in midfield, then I don't know what to say

You'd be seeing a lot more of these in the coming years. Clubs aren't spending crazy sums of money for players and UEFA and its new financial rules for competing in Europe are a huge factor as well. The problem with Barcelona is that they kept Messi for far too long on their books, knowing fully well they couldn't afford him.
It wasn't just Messi (although he was a significant factor). They actually made 200m+ on just Neymar. Problem was they spunked money on absolute garbage like Dembele, Coutinho, Greizmann + tons of other useless players in the 30-50m range. It was Woodward on steroids at one point.

It remains to be seen, but he can thrive at City still with the way they set up. Not a shred of doubt he’ll still be immense. People in this thread wanted him here, of course, reckon you’d see his age if he was in this United side.
Would depend on how stupidly we used him. Play to his strengths and he's comfortably one of the best in the league. Kind of player that could turn the tide for Arsenal if he were there too.

Feckin A!

A pretty low risk signing for them, they get a world class player who has already proven his compatability in the system and league and brings bags of experience for the younger players to learn off.

He got a really serious injury around the time we were interested and a lot on here though he was finished.

True. But those aren't bad players. The club just overpaid for them and didn't use them well.

Yeah no way Bruno plays till his late 30s. He literally plays 50-55 games per season, and always runs a lot. It surely takes a toll on his body.

He was an amazing young player for Dortmund. You wouldn’t be able to tell but the general commentary on him but he lost many years not really making it between that and City which was his redemption rather than his crowning glory. He’s had a few very good years there but all in all he’s nowhere near a great.

So Savinho from a fellow “City Group” club and Gundogan on a free? Reeks to me that City know they are going to have the book thrown at them and are playing conservatively with their transfers.

The concern about him wasn’t his ability, it was whether he’d be done and out of football before 30. His back issues made normal clubs extremely wary because the gamble on a costly asset who you already know could be ruined at any given moment was an extremely risky endeavour that normal clubs would be pilloried for should he have indeed gone out early with his back.

Meanwhile, state clubs can take all the risk in the world with no consequence should it not work out; just throw him on the heap with a shrug of the shoulders.

Without state money, Gündogen’s passage to the top table would have relied on punts (at reduced cost) at or close to the end of his Dortmund contract to at least minimise the potential fallout - with a healthy body, the guy would have been pursued by a who’s who of the time.

I’m sure City taking the “gamble” where others wouldn’t touch him has endeared them to him, for which he has and will play his heart out for them. One of those who has solid reason to be more than a merc there.

intelligent in positioning and one of the very few midfielders who can actually play a no.6, 8 or 10 effectively.
