Ilkay Gündogan | Rejoins City

Seeing how barca is willing to releasing him on a free I wouldn't mind us offering him a 3 year contracts with his current wages.

He'd probably go back to city but I suppose it's worth a try.

Yeah, Özil is a horrible person. That reflected badly on Gündogan.
Gundogan is a much better person. Maybe he made a mistake but he apologized immediately which is why he was NT captain after that

We should be trying to bring this guy if Barca is truly letting him go.. available on a free transfer apparently.. a much better option than a Rabiot if it’s just the wages we need to pay

This is the type of transfer Ineos said we'd stop doing. He's 33 years old.

Why are Barca letting him go on a free? Did they literally just need anyone off their books so they could register Dani Olmo? Or has Gundogan flattered to deceive for them?

The former. Also they just can't afford or justify the massive wages he was on, and he didn't get along with his teammates, because coming off a treble winner, he has standards and accepts accountability

Was their best player by hilarious margins last season, aside from Lamine Yamal

You'd be seeing a lot more of these in the coming years. Clubs aren't spending crazy sums of money for players and UEFA and its new financial rules for competing in Europe are a huge factor as well. The problem with Barcelona is that they kept Messi for far too long on their books, knowing fully well they couldn't afford him.

Top top midfielder - will only make them stronger as he's much better than all their other options outside of Rodri and De Bruyne.

I really hope a year away from City has caused him to lose what he had for them previously. Otherwise that is a darn good free transfer for them.

Bad news for the rest of us. Will be a solid player for City yet again.

Great signing for them. Gives them even more of an edge

Annoyingly good, and as always no doubt he’ll score crucial goals especially in their run in

He’s 34 in two months. He’s still good but the decline will come.

Not sure why they let him go in the first place. Still an excellent player and this probably seals the title for them again sadly.

I don't like City but have to admit I've always liked Gundogan, he's always come across as a decent chap to me and obviously a top player.

Will be a great addition for them this season. Beyond that, he does add to a potential issue with an ageing central midfield. Rodri is in his prime but De Bruyne, Kovacic, Gundogan all starting to get on a bit. Some very promising youngsters but a hole in terms of that core 23-27 age bracket. They need Nunes to come good otherwise they'll have to make signings.

None of this really a 'problem' by comparison to our own travails but for a team trying to stay at the very top, you have to think about these things.

People would probably call him the next Schweinsteiger and be against this signing if we made an attempt to get him. Unreal midfielder that likely will follow in the longevity of Modric.

Well yes, because there's an absolutely massive difference in what both teams need.

How much better than the majority of the league is he in "decline"? would be the question.

Absolutely elite player and one of the best signings of the summer.

Let's not forget Gündogan was close to having to end his career due to chronic back injuries and had to adapt a playstyle with less changes of directions due to it. I would love him to play into his late 30s but realistically, I don't expect him to.

It remains to be seen, but he can thrive at City still with the way they set up. Not a shred of doubt he’ll still be immense. People in this thread wanted him here, of course, reckon you’d see his age if he was in this United side.

Suddenly Barcelona have a new lever with a mysterious benefactor handing them a few million from Abu Dhabi after this deal?

thought he looked past it a Barca at times. But Peps PED´s can give people wings.

The time to regret not signing him was 8 years ago when City signed him and 3 years later when he was uncertain over a new contract. Since then he was either never going to leave City because of his importance or now he's older and on too high wages to make sense.

£20m they got him for. Bargain. They gambled on his back injury and he struggled at the start. Then it all fell into place - especially when Silva left.
