ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

100 off 119 in an ODI is wasteman territory?
100 off 119 and we're complaining about his SR?
Some really weird folks in this thread. "Wasteman" century with a SR of 85 on what looks like a tough pitch to bat on.... jesus wept

The issue isn't the overall SR of 85 - that's not a bad thing on a tricky wicket, like most are mentioning. The issue here is that he had a good start, and was poised to explode if he'd taken more risks, but clearly prioritized his century over picking out shots towards the end. The issue is that we're getting a different version of Kohli this WC than the one we're used to. All that said, it's nitpicking, really.

The bigger story is the magic of Kohli scoring #49 on his birthday in front of 70,000 at the Eden Gardens in a top of the table WC clash. A mammoth partnership with Iyer navigated a tricky pitch, and then his conservative rotation of strike allowed Iyer, SKY and Jadeja to go for boundaries and an above-par score.

Kuldeep and Jadeja must be raring to go.

I definitely agree this is a possibility for us but at the point he was making this decision, it did not seem like it. There was time to attack, and if wickets were lost, to consolidate.
He’s just said when interviewed, that after the first 2 wickets went down, he was playing a role, as instructed, to bat deep for the team. It’s harsh to criticise him alone, if it’s even warranted in this match. So blame The Wall.

I think the Caf likes having extreme opinions.

It was a good knock from Kohli; at the same time, he should have batted with more intent in the last 10-15 overs. If this was closer to run a ball, there would have been a lot more praise.

He played brilliantly between overs 10-35 today. Rohit's start enables Virat to set up a brilliant platform and I think the two complement each other. The final 30% of Virat's innings needs to be different, though.

I think Kohli is generally an expert at judging the conditions and so he did what he needed to do for the team. Could have played a few more shots at the end but India are way way over par here.

Kohli has definitely been playing for his centuries in this World Cup , I really hope he gets another one against Netherlands to break Sachin's record so that in the Semis and hopefully finals he can play freely and doesn't slow down if he approaches another mile stone .

326 should be quite enough. The pitch is not as easy as some make it to be. Should be a good run chase.

I think he'd play differently in a chase regardless. So far he hasn't needed to play differently, and I'd argue his approach hasn't cost the team anything.

In fact it's the exact way he should be playing given Hardik is out and Surya is yet to gain proper form.

It's the slowest century of the world cup by far. This is not 2003 anymore.
Yes as we should, india scored at 6.5 he scored at 5 an over.
Which would be a problem if the team score wasn't what looks like a very very competitive score. Obviously if SA go and blitz India, then we can call it out.

At the moment, he's anchored a very good score with a very good innings. It's interesting to say he puts the team before him, today it looks like he did just what his team needs. As others have said, it's possible he takes risks earlier, gets out and the team collapses.

I think its a case of alls well that ends well, if it does indeed end well.

It hasn't cost Anything yet and hopefully it won't going forward either and this criticism of going slow while approaching hundred is something which Not only Kohli is guilty of there are others as well in Indian team it can sometimes really bring down the momentum and suddenly give opposition a sniff and in the games decided by small margins that can prove to be vital .

Unsurprisingly India dominating, especially at home. I hope I’m wrong, but the money in Indian cricket completely dwarfs the rest of the world, and in the long run in may become a one horse race in all formats of the game. Yes a team will rise now and again, but India have the financial muscle and interest to dominate overall.

I’m not saying it’s unfair mind you, it’s not a Man City situation. And further to that, it’s not necessarily bad for the game as India is the biggest market, so Indian supporters will for the most part be happy with the dominance.

I thought that was hitting outside the line of leg. Weird

WTF has happened to Shami. Unplayable right now.

Also those criticizing Kohli's 100 look a bit daft right now.

I think this is a little window into the gap between SA and India.

One team is the best ODI side in the world with home conditions on top (they don't need it).

The other is in good form.

So is nobody going to give India a game all tournament? This is basically a procession now.

The amount of pressure on them to win this in the final 4 is potentially tough to handle - but this squad is so used to high pressure Cricket.

SA chasing is completely different team. I have never seen a team so different when batting first. Hopefully they sort this before semis but Australia is probably loving this.

Tbh Kohli could’ve made 0 off 100 and it’d look a master class right now

Such a flat pitch. Kohli should be ashamed of his 100. Playing for milestone

I think people are intentionally missing the nuance with the Kohli 100 discussions although I didn't see his knock today so can't comment on that.

Gotta love kohli fans, somehow taking credit for india's bowlers brilliance. Like folks we scored 326, kohli scored 100 of those in 20 overs, so the rest scored 220 in the remaining 30, stop pretending like kohli somehow singlehandedly took us to that score and the pitch was unplayable but for kohli

Nah, man. It's just silly talk. The second Gill got out, I knew this wasn't as flat as Rohit made out. I haven't read too many of the comments, to be honest, but I can't see why anyone would complain about the WC Kohli is having. I mean Afghanistan are the team that have scored the most runs against us. We could play SA twice this WC and they mightn't get as many.

We've produced some good teams, but I can't think of an Indian side with a more lethal bowling attack, or one that has produced the goods as consistently in multiple countries.

Why is Kuldeep not spinning the ball at all in any of the matches. Feels like Jadeja spins it more than him

I think you are missing the discussion point from previous games - not tonight (like I said - I can't comment on today).

Kohli has been brilliant, he's having an iconic tournament - only idiots are debating that, I wasn't keen on the 'playing' for your own score in a tournament like this. That mentality can bite you when you don't expect it to if you're not careful.

Yeah I get you. Lets see what happens in a few weeks. So far, it's had no bearing at all.

On another note, Shami has 16 wickets in 4 games @ 7.00 per wicket. WTF.
