Regarding the gay footballers' reluctance to come out, I understand them completely. It's absolutely depressing to imagine the amount of abuse they'd suffer, maybe even from sections of their own support.
It would be wonderful to see a gay player strong and arrogant enough (a kind of gay Cantona, if you like) to come out, but sadly I think the homophobia within the game is still too strong. (Actual homophobia, not Mehdiwhatever's 'You're mean to Busquets!' variety.)

I'm looking forward to the day gay players can feel free to be out and proud, though.

I'm probably mistaken, but didn't all that gay rumour stuff about Le Saux start purely because he said to an interviewer that in his spare time he liked collecting antiques and read the occasional book?

If that's gay, then I'm a thundering homosexual.

Yeah, he admitted he liked antiques and read a broadsheet newspaper, and this cumulated in homophobic abuse, from opposition players such as Robbie Fowler, and even our own David Beckham apparently.

From what I've read it was a combination of reading the Guardian, and going camping with Erland Johnsen.

Aye that would have been top drawer banter.

But when you see his reaction you can tell he's probably had a lot of stick about it already.

And i think when you are a man with a wife and kids you dont really take these alligations lightly. At least he had a bit of humour in his response.

When i look at it it looks like a picture of two guys who have had a falling out and are shaking hands to make up. Zlatan still looks sour and Pique looks apologetic. They shake hands, have a little hug and during the release a photographer snaps a picture which could be mistaken for homosexual.

The picture sells papers and gets a rise out of the players. All in all it's a loads of shit clearly. Quite humerous though!
 
So much fuss over something so innocent ehh? Fecking hell, no wonder why gays don't come out in football/or don't play football when you get so much noise over a picture.
