I think my PS3 is Dying

I played it for about an hour last night and it didn't freeze, but the drive was still being incredibly noisy, sounds like a fecking fighter jet.

 @ Solius btw.

Strangely enough, I was at a mate's place yesterday, and his Call of Duty 4 on the PS3 simply refused to load no matter what was done. The console itself sounded like a Giraffe being peeled alive.

This had never happened before.

It doesn't work, at least not with mine. It's open it up job with a pressured air can for us.

You can do a fan test on the 60gb models.

Power off the machine

If you have the machine on its side turn it upside down so the vent normally at the top is acting as the base of the device. Now turn on the ps3 and let it run after a short while you will hear the fan kick into 2nd gear just leave it be and the machine will cycle through the different speeds

Mine's 20 years old.

The puppy I have at home looks something like that Weastie. An absolute monster of thing but it packs a whopping pnch from the speakers. Shame its kept out in the shed

Edit:

You've a nice juicy EQ Band and all on her lucky bastard :(

I have some sony headphones. The feckers keep falling apart. Suspect glueing?

Oh, she packs a punch alright, 140W continuous RMS output per channel. Just a shame it is only a 4 speaker stereo, so I have to use a different receiver to get surround sound.

This is one of my speakers - shock horror, they are not Sony. ;)

I got it all when I was between 15 and 17 years old, just adding a seperate at a time. Never had a Sony Electronics product break on me yet, touch wood.

Ah yes the good old reliable, sturdy and packs a punch Pioneer Speakers tasty if I may say so myself an excellent choice thine Weastiebold.

Right, I played a Blu-Ray disc and it was still making the same noise. I tried a couple of CD's, and whilst still louder than usual, it was a lot quieter than it is with a Blu-Ray disc.

Make of that what you will.

Mine has gone spastic a few weeks ago, it won't even start.

these must be isolated incidents

Sony products are like tanks (in durability, not size)

I sold my friend my Sony TV I bought on my 18th Birthday (nearly 13 years ago) and he is still using it without issue

Sometimes these things happen. I got a silent fan in my pc - well it's meant to be silent. My brother gave it to me and now it's loud as a normal fan. Maybe i'm talking bollocks as it's out of my field of knowledge but it could be wear and tear?

If i was in your situation I would have run the ps3 with the side off so you can see if everything is working as it should. Maybe your noticing it more because something else that was making noise has gone quiet?

Or maybe some wires in the case have moved and are pressed on something spinning inside. The drive would work harder with blu ray media surely which could explain it being louder? or maybe not?

God knows if anything i've said is relevent but don't be scared to investigate - just be careful if you do

I'm getting a ps3 now just to be like you guys

All consumer electronics products have a level of failure between 2-5% (depending upon how complex they are and how new the technology is), that is normal.

Except for X Box 360s which are an order of magnitude higher.

I love my PS3 almost as much as my plasma screen and I hardly ever play games on it. It upscales AVIs so well I haven't rented a movie in months.

fecking PS3's. About as reliable as a shitbox360.

Well my 360 has been working pretty fine for the past two years, while PS3 broke after two months. Sony won't even talk to me on the phone, and when I tried to get it to their official store to check what's wrong they told me they wouldn't accept it as it was bought in the USA and not in their specific store (not to mention that I was prepare to pay for fixing it, as I was obviously aware that my guarantee is not valid here).

I'd love to buy a new PS3 but spending another £200 on a system that may easily break up next week seems silly.

Have you got some evidence to back up this hilarity that you have written here?

I have, I bought my PS3 in the middle of July, it worked fine for two weeks, I brought it back to Poland, it wouldn't work for more than 10 seconds at first and then it refused to work at all.

Recently it has been freezing a lot, whether it be when I'm watching a film, browsing the web or playing a game. The whole system will just freeze and not let me do anything. In addition to that when I play games the drive seems to be making a lot more noise than it usually does, dare I say it it sounds like it did when I had my 360. It's a 60GB console and I've had it since late April 2007, I know a lot of the earlier models have had troubles with the Blu-Ray drives, so maybe that's what's happening?

I'll see how it works over the next few weeks and if it continues I'll ring up Sony. However, seeing as the 60GB Models are no longer produced, if they replace it will they have a batch of 60GB consoles as replacements or will they give me a new 80GB one?

Not that I'm too fussed about BC, I have very rarely used it (If anything I've played more PS1 games, and obviously they are still playable) but I paid £425 for that added feature along with the card readers and the USB ports, so I'll be slightly ticked off if they don't have any of the 60GB Models left to replace mine with. (If, and I hope it doesn't, it comes to that)

...

So from this "evidence" we can now safely say that the PS3 has a failure rate similar to XB360?

You fecking tards!

I've had four Sony systems so far - one PSX, two PS2s and one PS3. 3 of 4 have broken down.

I've had three Microsoft systems - one Xbox and two 360s. None of them failed.

it's probably to do with your username.

Xbox 360 had a faliure rate of 30%, but microsoft always told us it was only 5%.
It was built wrong and couldnt handle the heat it generated..so expect xbox360 2 to arrive soon, this time with a 2kg heat sink included.

Not like this is the first time microsoft have released something half finished.
Id love to see Sega make a comeback...
