Recently it has been freezing a lot, whether it be when I'm watching a film, browsing the web or playing a game. The whole system will just freeze and not let me do anything. In addition to that when I play games the drive seems to be making a lot more noise than it usually does, dare I say it it sounds like it did when I had my 360. It's a 60GB console and I've had it since late April 2007, I know a lot of the earlier models have had troubles with the Blu-Ray drives, so maybe that's what's happening?

I'll see how it works over the next few weeks and if it continues I'll ring up Sony. However, seeing as the 60GB Models are no longer produced, if they replace it will they have a batch of 60GB consoles as replacements or will they give me a new 80GB one?

Not that I'm too fussed about BC, I have very rarely used it (If anything I've played more PS1 games, and obviously they are still playable) but I paid £425 for that added feature along with the card readers and the USB ports, so I'll be slightly ticked off if they don't have any of the 60GB Models left to replace mine with. (If, and I hope it doesn't, it comes to that)

That sucks, I personaly don't think theyd have any 60GB's.

What you could do though if they do send you an 80GB is go in a few shops and see if they have any used ones in stock to trade in, if there are any still there of course.

If it's the BD drive, they can very easily swap that out and send him the same unit back. If you ask of course.

Mine's as solid as a rock. :D

Well I'm having to constantly delete things off it because it is getting full up and I can't afford to get a bigger one yet. It has around 4GB of space left on it at the moment.

Am I right in saying I wouldn't be able to keep my HDD as it'd have to be re-formatted to be put into a new one?

That wouldn't really bother me, as I can just back-up my save games, but re-downloading all my PSN stuff will be a chore, considering I don't have wireless.

Well it takes 5GB of space for System Data, so around 51GB of the 55GB I have available has been used.

Like I said, I'll see how it runs over the next week or so and if it continues I'll give Sony a ring. I've heard plenty of cases where they have dealt with this sort of stuff really well so hopefully they can do the same for me.

Though I wouldn't mind an 80GB console with a load of freebies, perhaps I'll try and negotiate that:D

I have nothing to back it up onto!

I can back up the save games on a memory stick, and game installs are easy enough to re-install. The likes of WipEout HD, Siren etc. will be a piss-take to re-download though, and I don't want to be going through all of that and then have the same problems re-occuring.

And this is all moot, when I pay £425 for a machine I expect it to last, regardless of whether or not I defrag the HDD or it gets close to capacity.

He he he!

It isn't really broken yet is it? Just try it, as it's most likely the problem.

Fair enough, that may explain the freezes, but what about the insanely loud drive?

Sod it, I'm going to ring Sony up on Monday if the problem hasn't cleared, I've spent close to a £1000 on the PS3, games, accessories etc, so I expect to be treated like a valued customer.

What if the drive is streaming things from the optical disk onto the HDD? I had the same problem not long after I got Uncharted, the BD drive was making one hell of a noise. I replaced the HDD to a bigger model and it stopped.

They have stuck that new thing in the firmware for a reason. Rebuild the file system.

Right, I've restored the file system, that only took 2 minutes. Now When I go to rebuild the databse, I'm told I will losse messages, playlists, and other saved information. Does that extend to saved games, game installs, downloads etc?

Also told it could take a few hours.

This is the defrag bit, it will get rid of information that isn't very important. You could lose game saves, this is a danger.

When I said "try it in that order", I meant try one, then see how it goes.

Bugger it, I'm not risking it.

I'll back up the saves tomorrow and do it then.

Thanks for all the help Weaste, it won't go unnoticed when it comes to the Caf '08 awards:D

My PS3 fan is mental, sound like a jet taking off

Right, I have a trick, and you'll find out what a jet engine really sounds like. ;)

Also, get a big duster ready.

Shut it down as per usual, and then turn it off at the back. Then, place your finger on the disc eject button and keep it there. Then while doing that, turn it back on at the back and keep it there and watch the dust.

I've seen this done and almost choked.

Might give it a try, where is the dust supposed to be ejected from?

didn't happen anything

edit: it worked, but didn't see any dust flying out

I heard of that little dust cleaning trick before

Never had the balls to try it

Everytime you make a new thread, your PS3 dies a little inside :P
