You're both right, Matheson's '54 vampire/sci-fi novel is revered as the best vampire book since Bram Stoker but the first film adaptation in Charlton Heston's The Omega Man took huge liberties with the story not least by removing all the vampires.
From the sounds of it the Will Smith version is closer to the book but has been a bit vague on whether the human remnanats are vampires, zombies or some other form of plague victims.

I have been trying to get my hands on Mattheson's book for a while now. I desperately wanted to read the book before watching the movie, but i doubt thats going to be possible now. Anyway, the first attemt at making a movie out of Mattheson's tale was a Vincent Price starrer - The last man on Earth, which i've heard good things about. The less said about Charlton Heston in "The Omega Man", the better. I've heard that the latest Will Smith avatar has great visuals even though the plot is a little convoluted/flawed. Still looking forward to it.

Try not to spoil it for others, but it was a pretty good movie. Better then the recent zombie movies or what have you. I don't know if you would consider them zombie's because they aren't dead or haven't died. Maybe plague victims, but it is worth the money to go see. Batman DarkKnight looks excellent though.

saw it IMAX also, it was alright movie, and also saw a 5-minute batman trailer for the new movie. The new batman movie is gonna be fecking great. Can't wait for it to come out.
