"An artist in my eyes, is someone who can lighten up a dark room.
I have never and will never find difference between the pass from Pele to Carlos Alberto in the final of the World Cup in 1970 and the poetry of the young Rimbaud,
who stretches cords from steeple to steeple and garlands from window to window.
There is in each of these human manifestations an expression of beauty which touches us and gives us a feeling of eternity."

not been many number 7's in the 90's ;)

Miss Eric more than any other player too, wish he stayed young forever and never stopped playing, and even though thats impossible, its because its also how we feel anyway that his name is still chanted more than any other ex-Red. Weastey, telling us to stop missing Eric is like telling us to give up our Religion. Blasphemer. :p

I can see what Weaste's point is though. He disagree's to people wanting Eric in the team today, missing him in the sense that they'd have him back in the team, which I can fully understand and agree with myself.

Just who want Eric back into our team? Everyone know it's impossible. I view this thread as a respect and tribute to Eric, nothing more.

Don't be such a miserable fecker and spoil other's nostalgic memories. Nothing wrong about reminiscing over the magical memories United has given us.

I admit I haven't seen too much about Robson. So may be Robson is better. But anyway, this is not very related to this thread.

People like players for different reasons. Giggs and Best for their excitement, Robson for his control of the midfield, but Eric, he was an artist, he was capable of the sublime, of incredible vision, audacity and authority - and for this he's my all time greatest player.

No, I agree, but "miss" is a feeling most of you probably still have, and it is not nostaligic in any way. It's madness.

Anyway, you've all wound me up so much I'm off for a Guinness, I need to calm my nerves with a bit or iron.

Nutters! :p

So what you're trying to say is that in your opinion/experience, Eric was the greatest number 7?

different opinions, i suppose.

But for me Robson was something else....he took games by the scruff of the neck, and turned them around..... anyone remember Barca 3-0?

Robson was a one man team....... he even wished that he played with the current crop..... god knows what he would have achieved.

Most of the people i've come across, who grew up in the 80's regard him as their number one player.....

Eric was my idol in the 90's, i should add.... I loved his arrogance and confidence on the pitch.. he helped in the careers of becks and co.....so he wasn't just great on the pitch.

yes i think we are and where!!

He is GOD!!!

IMO he should be on the coaching staff atleast...

I miss Cantona playing for us. With him on the pitch you never knew what to expect. It always made for interesting viewing when Eric was on the pitch.

"Look at these small fry. I could piss on them"
ERIC CANTONA THREATENS SPORTS JOURNALISTS ON A FRENCH TELEVISION CHAT SHOW IN MARCH 2001

"Cantona rules the Evans" - Banner at 1996 FA Cup final versus Liverpool

"Truly, I've never known anything like it. They idolise him. More than they did Denis Law, even more than they did George Best." - Paddy Crerand on EC.

"I don't play agast a particular team. I play aginst the idea of losing." - EC.

"I've been punished for striking a goalkeeper. For spitting at supporters. For throwing my shirt at a referee. For Calling my manager a bag of shit. I called those who judged a bunch of idiots. And I thought I might have trouble finding a sponsor." - Eric in NIKE advert.

I miss the quotes.

'kinell @ this thread.

Eric was a genius of football. We probably don't need him in the team today, but there's no denying his every touch had an reason. His every move on the field had a purpose.

He picked the best time to go. I'd have hated to see him turn into Michael Jordan of today's basketball. Legends need to step out while they're still on top - for people to remember them that way.

Thank God for Eric. Thank God we kept winning after he was gone. I think it was a message to all the fans to say that there can be life post-Eric. And that's why the best Eric can be is a memory - not someone we should still have in the first XI.

Love Live The King!

Makes no difference whether he was better than others or not.

No player has come close to having the same aura about him. I doubt anyone ever will. The effect he had on the team, the opposition, and the supporters, was unique.

For that reason we are permitted to miss those days, and to remember him with pride.

Cantona's presence on the field was enough to beat teams. Enuff said <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

This argument in its present form is meaningless. I miss Edwards, Taylor, Law, Charlton, Best, Cantona etc etc etc. What I think is more relevant is are we missing a Cantona type player which despite his particular uniqueness we could do something about? Maybe Fergie had this in mind when he was looking at Di Cannio. Maybe Veron will still prove to be the perfect answer if he keeps going the way he has recently. In other words someone to perform the unexpected, those moments of brilliance that win matches no matter who the opposition is. Also someone who has a positive influence on the rest of the team both on and off the field. We probably look to Veron more than anyone else to fulfill that role at the moment. Is he the answer and if not who is ?
