How good is Chris Smalling?

He really wasn't poor with the ball in that first half, he misplaced one or two passes in that time(including one hoofed ball).

No agree he was excellent last night but I was meaning in general.

The man is an absolute mountain of a defender. Cleared everything sunderland threw at us in the air and tidied up very nicely in defence.

He and Jones should get a run as CB's for us IMO.

Smalling and Jones would be my first choice pairing going forward - play them together as much as possible in my opinion.

I agree. I wanted Evans in there, but he's suffering from a dip in form. Give Jones some game time and see how they develop.

Smalling is absolutely a brilliant defender!

Definitely one of our best players yesterday but I always feel he has a clumsy error in him.

This. Considering that we're effectively rebuilding and with Evans going through another spell of poor form, it makes sense to just give Jones and Smalling a clear run as CB partners. Vidic and Evans as backup.

I am against dropping Vidic.

He's our best defender. I think it should be Smalling and Vidic till the end of the season. Then buy a experienced CB.

We can't just go experimenting with Jones and Smalling. People saying Fergie was experimenting with Vidic and a Rio towards back end of 05/06. Well we could experiment back then because we were always guaranteed second.

He is ok, but he is not going to set the world alight.

We need to be looking to buy a top class, experienced center back who can be our main man for the next 5 years.

Then let Evans, Smalling and Jones fight it out to be the one who partners him.

was excellent last night, perhaps the only player to come out of last night with some credit, though i think Evans was excellent too. the other 12 players however were shocking.

I normally rate Smalling, but I thought he contributed to the panic last night.

He kept kicking it away when he could have left it for his keeper or for a goal-kick and also could have been red carded for a blatant foul in the second half.

Still, he's the best United defensive talent by a mile. Jones is just so over-rated it's unreal.

Nonsense, Adnan was excellent (again).

You have no idea about football, don't you?

no he wasnt. he did ok, but once it came to the final 3rd, he was as greedy as it comes. his desicion making was appaling and he gave away the ball time and time again. set up hernandez twice, but apart from that his end product was poor, very poor.

we have a habit of giving players a free ride and he is getting one at the moment. he has been a breath of fresh air, but we are treating him as if he is the new Pele and its a bit much. he needs to calm down and pass the f*cking ball. sunderland away and last night and indeed at Chelsea on sunday, he was extremely wasteful.

Jones, if we lift that embargo that prevents him from playing in his proper position.

He and Evans great again. Dunno how many times we have to say this before everyone recognises this is our best two at the moment.

I've been on my Smalling plus one campaign for a while now. For me, he is our best defender. He needs to stay in the team and get the chance to grow.

I still think that he and Jones would be our best option long run.

He was absolutely Immense tonight. IMO the best natural defender at the club at present form. Their was a point in the second half where he tackled Noone I think who was running at him into the box, and he somehow just nicked it off him with ease. He is some player, and should no longer be stuck out in the RB position, he's frankly just too good.

They were very good.

Still think jones and Smalling will ultimately be our best two. Harsh on Evans but I see it going that way eventually

Smalling was fantastic tonight.

Him, Jones, Evans and Mangala for next season please....

I think Smalling and Evans are our best partnership now and will be in the future too. Jones will have his work cut-out to displace one of those two imo. Good situation to be in.

I've noticed the opinions on Smalling and Evans on here tend to change quite frequently depending on who we come up against...Often when we play a Chelsea or a Man City the general feeling on here tends to be that neither of them are good enough but when we come up against a team outside the top 6 then the general feeling is that they are monster first team defenders.

Just thought I'd throw this in here for consideration.

I really can't stand seeing Chris Smalling play for us. He is decent at defending, but that is where it completely stops. Whenever he receives the ball he SHITS himself, no matter where he is. Not only that, but then he plays the ball (awfully, after a few bambi on ice manoeuvres) and attempts to tell the person he's played it to to get it as far away as possible from himself. He is a coward and a pretty shocking footballer.

Particularly with Evans. When he has a few good games some claim he'd get into any side in the world and when he's playing badly he's considered a mid table defender.

One of my mates has the exact same opinion as adamwest said there.

He thinks that Chris Smalling is only in the England squad because he plays for us. if he was still at fulham he wouldnt be any where near the team,

People's opinions vary so much on Evans and Smalling it's amazing. Some people rate them so highly while others think of them as clowns. Crazy stuff indeed.

They're good but wouldn't be starters for the other top 4 teams IMO, and probably not good enough to form the back bone of a title winning team. Not now at least. They might form a great partnership with time but I'd prefer to bring in an experienced head (like with the Dante rumours), because Smalling and Evans both lack that experience and defensive know how at times. They'll only get it with games though, same with Jones.
