How excited are you?

Onward and upward! Looking forward to the journey with ETH. I have zero expectations for next year, which is kind of nice (sadly).

Happy to move on from the 'depressed' thread. Though I will miss the many good posters on there.

I was the most excited when LVG announced Di Maria, Falcao, etc. I thought we'd smashed it.
LvG, a coach who wanted for his team to have possession and control of the ball, got given big name attacking players like Di Maria and Falcao while made to play with a defense that had almost no ball playing capabilities and midfield of Fellaini and Schneiderlin.
I remember a match in which he forced Rooney and RvP to play midfield in order to get a goal.

The coaches are almost set up to fail by a recruitment department that focuses on commercial signing to create shock waves. In case of LvG, I believe his story at United would have been entirely different story if he was given quality midfielders and ball playing CB instead. At least his possession football wouldn't have been so toothless and boring.

There's little to be excited about until the recruitment begins to look like it matches both standard of a club like United and the vision of the manager.

I was excited for all of Moyes, LVG, Mourinho and Rangnick so feeling a bit of an idiot at this stage but this is the most I'd say I've been excited. Almost felt emotional at the news earlier despite how obvious it was going to happen

Me too, mate. Exactly

Very excited. This is a manager who is clear on his expectations and style of play. Our players need that level of detail coached into them. Seems a great fit. It also helps that many players are leaving, so he has a slate as clean as it gets to build a new team.

I think it's important to note that excitement over the manager and club are two different things.
  • Moyes - I was bemused by his appointment as he never came across as fit for a big club. But given our success under SAF I was excited about the club's present and future which overrode by worry about Moyes' credentials
  • LVG - I was really excited over this appointment. A teacher-coach to modernized us was exactly what we needed at the time. On the club front it was just a year or so since our title winning days, so the feeling was still upbeat with the Moyes year potentially a blip
  • Mourinho - I was never a fan of Jose's footballing philosophy and skeptical about how he fit in with United and what our fans /I like (attack, youth etc). By this time, I'd say one started becoming jaded with the general running of the club. But big names and big talk would resurrect one's positivity.
  • Ole - I didn't ever rate Ole. He had no credentials to manage us whatsoever. However he did win over a lot of positivity through his run as interim manager. I'd put him in the highly skeptical basket. It was more a case of supporting the club and trying to be positive than actually thinking this fellow is going to get us playing brilliant footy. Regarding the club, one definitely began to lose faith by this time.
  • ETH - As a coach, I think this is our most exciting addition. He's young for a manager, has won a lot and most importantly plays an exciting brand of footy. Maybe the excitement level under LVG was the same, not sure. The problem this time is that my faith in the board and the players is at an all time low. I think many fans feel a bit scarred after watching repeated humiliations and footballers who won't run/lost interest. Our world class talent in Greenwood is gone. Martial and Rashford have fallen off a cliff. And so on. But there is some hope with some of the changes we're making by bringing Rangnick etc that the club are making efforts to rebuild its structure.

I am very excited. ETH is in my opinion the best coach not already in the Premier League. Having Guardiola, Klopp, Tuchel, Conte and now ETH in the same league is going to make things really interesting. The top 5 IMO in charge of 5 of the 6 best clubs. The PL is set to dominate even more.

Very, but I would also have been pleased if we'd brought in Sarri a few years back, as I think the Guardiola model of keeping possession to be good defensively is easier to implement than a Klopp style, and even if Ten Hag doesn't work out brilliantly for a decade here, the player should improve technically, he'll probably not be afraid to play youth (and prioritize skilled guys over McTominays) and we can't take half measures.

LVG was the only one I expected to do well here. ETH I dont know much about. I am mor excited about the transfer window than the managerial appointment at the moment.....partly for negative reasons. Excited isnt the word but looking forward to double figures worth of some of the dross leaving the club and a decent spend.

My excitement with ETH in the short term will very much depend on that summer window

ETH had sides that were often underdogs against the European giants, yet it didnt stop his team to play attacking football. That alone is already exciting. Compared to our previous managers who would setup for the counter attack weeks before a big game.
Even Poch would switch his tactics and hold back with his Spurs club.
I’d rather see our club go gung ho when facing the likes of City and Liverpool. In terms of entertainment factor, it is actually worth watching. Watching our few wins over some big clubs the past years, it was constantly a waiting game for 80% of the time.

Moyes - disappointed we went for him as I was never excited about this signing. He was at Everton level and he brought us down to Everton level

- Excitement level 5/10

LVG - after poor display by Moyes, I look forward to him as the man who would put us back to where we belong, especially after his fine WC display, success at every clubs he managed, and his past reputation at Ajax.

- Excitement level 8.5/10

Mourinho - never excited about his brand of football as it’s so boring, but quite excited by his reputation as one of most successful coach around. Have some doubts on my mind upon his very poor season with Chelsea which result in his sacking. Still convinced he will be good manager for us for short term (2-3 years), but definitely not for long term. But when he was appointed, we also signed Pogba immediately after, who was the most wanted/ most talented worldclass young midfielder at that time. Quite exciting actually. In short, excited about our short term success, not excited about our long term direction.

- Excitement level 8/10

Ole - he was appointed based on his amazing run which lead us to false hope for future. Have doubts with his credentials, but he is one of our very own, and looks like at that time he will bring us back playing United style of football (fast counter attacking).

- Excitement level 7/10

Ten Haag - my most wanted manager. He has the most exciting brand of football over past 3 seasons at Ajax. Probably one of the most hyped managed around. He is also very successful with Ajax, dominated domestically, and looking very impressive in Europe. However, we have been a very poor side with lots of issues, and a laughing stock, he has a hell lot of work to do here.

- Excitement level 9/10

Holding my excitement, our problems run deeper than just appointing an upcoming manager.

There's a bigger hope with every new manager simply because we're getting worse and worse with the one we've just sacked.

I learned not to be too optimistic, because I've already been a few times, and I don't know what to expect now and if it's really my belief in Ten Hag or it's just satisfaction we could actually get really better.

But I fully support him and hope he can do anything he wants with the club.

Not at all. I’ve lost all faith in the club hierarchy. I think things could get very very tough (even tougher) before it gets better. Best of luck to Ten Hag. He has a really difficult job.

ETH - As a coach, I think this is our most exciting addition. He's young for a manager,
I keep seeing this all over the forum, that ETH is a young manager, he is not. He is 52, he's older than Poch, Pep, Rodgers, Tuchel etc With Rangnick gone there will only be 4 managers older than him!

It's more the case he's still on his upward trajectory career wise.

I was surprised to find out Hansi Flick is 57 years old.

It's time to be pragmatic.

TH is not some kind of snake oil salesman with a top hat, some rabbits and a wand. But I'm sure he knows how much hard work and time is involved in getting the cogs in place and working together.

There are academy players/U23 that can bolster the squad. There are loanees ticking the right boxes. There are players leaving and for sure, new players arriving.

Getting all that up and running with the distraction of the summer carnival fixtures is a major task - even more so if the incomings are slow.

TH will need to be tough

I’m excited. More hopeful though that this is the start of sorting the mess out. A lot of work is needed on this club.

  • Moyes - Errr... well Fergie picked him, so lets give him a chance. Hopeful.
  • Moyes post Fulham game - Get him out of my club
  • LvG - He has the personality for the club. And he's not Moyes. Hopeful.
  • Mourinho - We will win the league! (Even if he's gone in the third season). Excited.
  • Post Mourinho season 2 - 2nd and some trophies! Jose is getting on my nerves though. Hopeful.
  • Mourinho season 3 - The players are divas. But Jose isn't helping. Jose out!
  • Ole interim - its only interim. Its fine.
  • Ole confirmed - WTF?!
  • Ole - false dawn post Bruno - Ok, Ole, you have my attention. Hopeful.
  • Ole third season - WTF?! was right.
  • Rangnick - Finally Ole's gone. Hopefully Rangnick can keep us in the top 4. Hopeful.
  • Right now - It's a team full of ne'er-do-wells. It doesn't even matter who is the manager
  • Ten Hag - I don't even want to hope till half this team clears out.
I've reached the end of my hope-disappoint cycle. I refuse to get excited till half of this team fecks off.

I will get excited in the summer once i see some of these lazy cnuts exiting the club and i dont just mean the ones who are out of contract.

At the moment not at all. Probably due to the fact it's been inevitable for weeks and secondly that our performance against Liverpool is still has me annoyed.

Generally my feelings towards ETH are hugely positive and he's the manager that I've naturally been most excited by, as he's been my no.1 choice.

That's not to say I wasn't excited for Jose, LVG or even Moyes to a lesser degree as I just convinced myself in my head that things will work out rather than wanting them on my own accord.

I think people mean he's "not old" rather than young. For example, LVG was in his 60s when we hired him. Ancelotti is in his 60s. But I didn't realise ETH will be the 5th oldest manager in the PL. I guess the average age has reduced a lot over the last 15 or so years.

Moyes - scared, going into the unknown.

LVG - excited, especially with the star signings

Mourinho - giddy, finally got the man. He always wins the league, doesn’t he?

Ole - confused

Rangnick - intrigued

ETH - filled with cautious optimism again

The only time I was happy and convinced we would be good was under Mourinho. I’d love ETH to be a success and especially as he’s my first choice. I however can’t get excited because it feels like the club is so toxic it strips away any talent the management or players have.

Not excited at all. Talk is cheap. It could all very easily go wrong, from the first match.

If Ten Hag was taking over Man City now, I would be convinced that he would be a huge success. I think he'd win City their first Champions League with beautiful football and style, handing out some brutal thrashings along the way. Their players are able to play how he'd want.

At United, he needs to rely on the people around him to get the right players in and give him the correct backing to build a squad. And they've failed every other manager so far. The only hope is that this is the first active window without Woodward and with a different structure in place. So if they do their job, he'll be a success. If they don't he wont be.

From before.

Say Ten Hag comes in and says I want ball playing fullbacks. Man Utd Board are like we spent £50m on Wan-Bissaka and £20m on Dalot, you can't have a new right back unless we sell one and we don't want to make significant losses on either. Nobody offers anywhere near what the Board wants for either player. Both are stuck here, like so many before.

From day one coach's authority is undermined and the pieces of the jigsaw he needs to complete his puzzle are denied.

People have to have noticed how every coach we've had since Fergie, regardless of their own style and preferences, has eventually defaulted back to 4-2-3-1 and trying to counter attack. Even Ralf has ended up more or less doing this, despite his love of gegenpressing. The squad conditions the style and the senior management refuse, point blank, to revamp the squad significantly.

My expectations for next season are on the floor.

I believe ETH is the manager that would turn this around and especially if Ralf helps the club rebuild from the ground up.
The thing is we dont know if this will happen.
My excitement will come depending on what players we get in and let go, and what our lineup will be when the season starts.
I dont really dare to be truly excited before.

Yep pretty much my feelings too. Our players are just too thick to play good.

Moderately excited.

Moyes I never wanted or rated as a Manchester United manager.

LVG I was excited enough to think we could go places with him, but subsequently we played some of the most boring football I've ever seen United play, so much so, I stopped watching the team play.

Jose, I was ok with, but never thought he would last long, three seasons at most, but the club became a cess pit under him, and I'm not sure we're really out of it.

Ole I was happy with, albeit in a caretaker role, the biggest problem was, I feel, Ole's lack of experience on the bigger stage, this is where the club needed to employ a highly qualified European coach alongside Ole when they offered him the job. Another reason was, I feel, that Ole was never given total control of recruitment under Woodward, all in all made life really difficult to manage the club he obviously loves.

Under ETH, we will need to be patient, I don't expect anything next season regards the league, hopefully pushing for top four, and a good cup run, and if we are in Europa League, then that will be a great opportunity to blood some of our outstanding academy players, to see if they are the real deal or not.
I'm hopeful that players like Henderson, Kovar, Laird, Mengi, Tuanzebe, Fernandez, Williams, Garner, Galbraith, Levitt, Chong, Shoretire, Hannibal, Savage, McNeil, Garnacho and even Mellor may get the opportunity next season, although I think for some that boat has sailed.

Which of the appointments after Fergie made you the most excited about the future, and I'm talking about the moment when United announced new manager? Is it Ten Hag or was it someone before him?

When they announced Moyes as SAF successor I was more depressed then delighted. Sure, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but not even the slightest part of me believed that this guy can do the job here.

Then, with LVG I really looked forward to it. I wasn't super horny, but felt like under Louis we got a chance. He had charisma, experience, great track record and I thought that he would take us back to the top.

Next we hired Mou and I couldn't be happier at the time. I loved the guy and always wanted him at OT, he seemed like he was made for this club. We just won FA Cup with LVG, had decent squad and I was certain that the only way would be up. For me definitely most exciting appointment.

When we made Ole full-time manager we were really flying high and I fell for it. I thought when he would sign right players and implement his ideas he can bring success back, however, I had doubts about how he would deal with poor results when they eventually come. But yeah, I could say i was happy about him.

Now with Ten Hag there is more hope for the better then excitement for me. I don't know what to expect from him, our board and staff. After last 9 years I don't want to be disappointed again, so I look at this new era with faith but also a lot more uncertainty then before

agree entirely with all of the above. Shared the same opinions.

here’s hoping ETH can save us.

im deliriously excited to see an overhaul…and whilst it’s something many have been asking for for years it’s generally not possible in one window. This time around it feels forced on us with the numbers expected to leave…and I can’t wait

8/10 on level of excitement.

10/10 is for someone that guarantee both positive style of play and immediate success, and platform for sustainable long term success.

9/10 would be someone with positive style of play, but only guarantee short term success.

So ETH is a promising appointment, but not a sure bet like Pep, or Klopp. He is the best available option right now, so no complaint. Not expecting him to win trophy or challenge title, or even top 4 trophy. However, a clear modernized competent style of play is a must. Second season would be where expectation getting lifted a bit. If he then survive into the third, we would like at least a domestic trophy, lest we're stuck in Ole'a trophyless cycle, and starting to lower expectation instead.

If I see up to 8 new faces and youngsters in the squad next season - no Mata, Matic, Lingard, Pogba, Grant, Jones, Maguire, AWB only then would I get excited.

A lot more excited/optimistic than I was 2 weeks ago, I'll tell you that for nothing. Change is in the air.

Quite honestly a 3/10 level excited. There are some bad apples at the club due to a consequence of having too large a squad and then some others whose confidence is buried below basement level. I could pretty much see the fear and trepidation in the 11 that showed up at Liverpool.

This squad is going to need surgery and work on so many levels before they hit anything like a stride.

Seems clear from this thread that we are set up for massive disappointment.
