How do we sell Harry Maguire?

Harry Maguire is a good player. It's just that he's not a great player. This is a club which until recently had players like Rio and Vidic as starting center backs. So when you judge Maguire against that standard, he falls rather short.

There is no need to hate on him or call him names. He's a perfectly serviceable player and a good 3rd option to have, a bit like Jonny Evans was when we had Rio and Vidic. But I can't see him being any more than that for a club competing for top honours.

This idea that there will be no takers for him is ridiculous. He could thrive in Italy where the pace is slower, or he could do very well at a mid table PL Club. (Everton/Burnley/Newcastle even Leicester) etc.

If we make it known that we want to sell him, there is no doubt that there will be clubs that will show interest in signing him.

Burnley? You think we’d just give him away for free? He probably cost more than Burnley entire squad combined.
3rd choice with his profile isn’t good enough! It’s starting CB or out.

There are a few other sides I have mentioned. We won't make up the money we have spent, but he's a player with value. I never mentioned that we should give him away for free. A fee between 35-50m Euro is what we should be looking to recoup.

Just donate him to another team, leave him somewhere in the wild and tell him he’s free now.

This thread.. make this bloke make sense..

He's also massively pro Pochettino over Ten Hag, pro Dean Henderson, wants Ronaldo gone. This breed of United 'fan' and where the come from genuinely scare me. The fact he's on the payroll is even more worrying.

Heard Rudiger’s stalling on contract talks. Offer him Maguire wages and he Rudiger might come. A speedier, stronger version of Maguire with fewer lapses of concentration.

I think selling Maguire to Everton or Newcastle for 35- 40million pounds wouldn’t be bad business.

"Fan" in quotation marks because he has opinions you disagree with? It's not even like some of them aren't commonly held opinions, there are plenty of United fans that want Poch as manager and like Henderson, you only have to read the Ronaldo performances thread to see half of the RedCafe geniuses declaring him finished and saying he should go asap. It's not even as if he's wrong about Maguire overall "bad form & a drop in confidence (born out of giving too much, & being exposed)".

I've never heard of the bloke before to be honest but to describe him as a scary breed of United fan is very odd behaviour. I'd probably suggest that a supposed United fan sharing a tweet with information that could have come from literally anywhere as "additional proof" that one of our players is definitely a leaker to the press is a much scarier breed.

Let me clarify, I see those views as views that are held within the club, which is what I find scary - he's an employee after all. I've been informed from a source I trust that Henderson is definitely one of the leakers so for me that is additional proof, for me.

On Maguire, citing his charity work, under 18 pep talks an inability to play in a high line are of no relevance to his value to us as a football team. He also describes him as one of the best CB's in the game. If you're still backing Maguire after this season, I applaud your loyalty to him. Shame he doesn't show loyalty to his teammates when he points fingers after his own individual errors.

This especially. He's a 'fridge', 'slabhead' etc and an easy target for media and fans on Twitter, Facebook.. I'm not happy at all with his performances this season neither but it's become ridiculous.. It's a pure hate. And also Tottenham's Romero is a prick. Hopefully karma comes back at him quickly.
He is called fridge because he turned like one.

We’re just going to have to take a hit and move him on at a massive loss, perhaps by dropping him, offering him out on loan to run down his contract.

Maguire was always going to be a peripheral player at best and certainly the wrong type of player to be captain of Utd.

Look I'm not necessarily disputing it. If I was back-up to De Gea and not getting a look in despite the major flaws in his game I'd probably be leaking stuff as well. And the timelines do somewhat match up. It's very poor from him if so but I don't see a tweet that's out of context as proof of anything. But you do, that's fair, I was just showing that differences in opinion don't necessarily mean another view is a "scary breed".

The tweet you've quoted isn't citing football ability though, it's citing characteristics largely associated with being a club captain which to be fair are largely things he does do. I'm not here to argue that he should or shouldn't be captain or even in the team. I don't agree with you on the blaming teammates for his errors, he's the captain so if there are errors in the build up to the goal it's his job to point them out - even when he's made one himself; this isn't a new captain phenomenon from Maguire it's been happening by captains for decades. From looking at his bio he's freelance, so isn't exactly an employee though he obvious does do the odd bit of work presumably for MUTV alongside Talksport, so it's highly unlikely he's privvy to too much information or we'd be seeing Talksport get all the exclusives.

I've got major reservations about him btw, a lot of them are very different to others on this forum in truth but I don't know if he will be good enough long term but my view is that we've got far bigger issues in the team to fix before throwing money at another centre back. His confidence is in the gutter and has been for a while, even in a decent performance on Saturday he gets some rotten luck and scores an own goal, that's where he's at right now. I just don't see the point getting on his back further when the blokes head is looks completely gone and the alternatives currently in the squad are no better.

If he was half as bad as fans on this thread suggest he wouldn't get near the starting line up, which suggests we need to find a replacement before moving him out.

To his credit, he keeps trying and he had a decent game on Saturday, but as the saying goes 'if it wasn't for bad luck, he would have no luck at all'

Take the captaincy off him and bench him for a couple of games, it may actually help relieve some pressure from him

Gotta be taking the piss or on the payroll...

I think he’s the player equivalent of David Moyes stepping up from Everton to United. Good for a certain level but not the top level.

If this was FIFA 22, I would have definitely gone to his card and done Quick Sell at the start of the season.

When is the last time we had a defender who has been as bad as Maguire has been for this long and was still consistently chosen in the first eleven?

The guy literally does something stupid every match that leads to us conceding or nearly conceding.

We need a manager who has the guts to drop him next season.

Chelsea and Arsenal spent 70 odd million on Kepa and Pepe respectively and have no problem relegating them to squad players so I don’t see why Maguire can’t be benched when Lindelof and Varane are fit

I mean you cannot name 1 player this season who has not been as bad as Maguire, so what is the point finger pointing at 1 player in the team?
he’s our £85m captain and biggest liability. Lots of players have been significantly better or not as bad.

Those who have been close to as bad are not defenders so they do not directly cost us goals, although they do cost us intangible things eg “what if he hadn’t had given the ball away 50 times, we might have created more chances“ or “what if he made the right decision, he might have crossed it to a player for an easy goal” (can anyone guess the players I have in mind:lol::lol::lol:)

The idea that we're willfully sabotaging our results because Maguire cost more than Lindelof is ridiculous. If Lindelof was a better player he'd be playing, just like Dalot gets games over £50m Wan Bissaka, VdB barely got a kick and Elanga starts over Rashford.

You'd like to believe that this thread is an emotional reaction to today's game rather than exasperation that Maguire has proven, yet again, to be a liability for the umpteenth time this season.

He plays a vital position in the team that compromises so many others when he messes up. He is a liability, but you do not bench £80m players, so the alternative is to sell them... or play them.

The sunk cost fallacy again. If an £80m gamble has failed, you take the hit and move on. See Kepa at Chelsea. Dropped for a keeper who cost far less.

I'm no big fan of Lindelof because I think he's too soft but he's been much better than the disastrous Maguire this season. Dalot is also not automatic first choice at RB considering he was dropped for three games before his last average appearance against Spurs where he gifted them a chance in the last minute of stoppage time.

The way Harry Maguire celebrated his England goal against a team of plumbers shows why he shouldn't be captain, he's got a small mentality, thinks he's better than he is.

If he wasn't English we never would have signed him. He's like a couple of Brighton defenders, ideal for a team looking to finish between 7th and 12th but not good enough for a team wanting to win major trophies, one is now at Arsenal.

He'd fit right in at Burnely with their experiment gone wrong and heading back to the championship. Four relegations under his belt!

Useless fecking donkey. Running around the pitch, chasing shadows.

God he’s been terrible tonight. His worst attribute is those aimless headers when he can just bring the ball down. No confidence.

This guy is fecking awful. I'll back a player who puts on the red shirt but not someone who is completely out of his depth and continuously starts.

He is officially my most hated player in all my 20 years of supporting United... will be drinking for a week once he is gone

I don’t think hes a bad defender when he’s the unquestioned commander of the defence who gets to organise everything to suit him and we play a low block that suits his game. Usurp him with a better defender like Varane, or ask him to play any other kind of defence like a higher block and he’s absolutely lost. Never mind selling him, I’d like to fire him into the sun with a cannon.

He’s too slow to push, everytime he goes out to pressure, he fails. Timing sucks. No agility. I don’t even wanna start on how he clears aerial balls to the opposition every fkn time. What’s he good at? Someone tell me how we spent nearly 100 mill on this clown. As if that was not enough he is our team CAPITANO. Forget about selling should terminate his contract. Employees gets booted in jobs they can’t do. So should he. Guy has no clue to lead a defensive line.

He is a shit defender. End of story

tries to put in a cross. Goes way out of bounds. How does he get payed to do this

Has to happen. We cannot have the world's most expensive defender perpetually on the bench, and we most definitely need to build a modern team of which he cannot play a part.

If it's a footballing decision, it's absolutely straight forward. Take a huge loss and get rid.

Let’s be honest, we couldn’t wait to get rid of Smalling because of his “limitations”. We were right to because he wasn’t good enough. But the truth is we’ve got someone with even more limitations than his predecessor. We’ve gone from cat shit to dog shit.
