Television House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel) - No book spoilers allowed

Looks a lot more later season Thrones than earlier seasons ...

Not impressed at all with the choice for Rhaenyra and Daemon, granted they most likely prioritized acting ability over visual appeal but there’s nothing about the pair of them that screams otherworldly beautiful. Alicent seems well casted though.

Very sparing use of dragons, which is a bit of a worry given how much of the story revolves around them.

Looks very high budget and the music is still great.

The ending sapped any enthusiasm I had for the series though.

Aegon looks retarded.

Edit: oh it's Daemon

If they're good actors, you'll probably forget soon enough. Much rather good actors than wooden mannequins wrecking the show

Exactly this. All the angry tweets from people about the looks. Matt Smith is a great actor. Also no one in real life has otherwordly beauty and let's be real, monarchs aren't exactly against propaganda so this otherwordly beauty is probably overstated. How many people would look good with that hair colour if we're honest. Of course it would help if the wigs weren't so shit, the only thing they don't seem to get right when the rest of it all looks quality.

Dragons are expensive cgi. I care much more about whether they do a good job translating the story, which is about the humans, to screen than watching dragons fly around for no good reason like in got's later seasons.

Anyway, knowing they're doing the DotD and seeing this teaser I'm gonna have to put on my clown mask again and say I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait for all the murder and killing and scheming and lying and death and dying. And best of all, the ending is already known so no whining about wrong endings that will be different in the books anymore. I'm sure there'll be plenty left to whine about but for now it looks really good. A step above all other fantasy shows that have come out since the end of got, which makes sense because they have ten years of infrastructure and skills etc to build on, now it just needs to be well written to complement that quality.

I think the problem at this point is that people expect big battles and blockbuster scenes out of GoT which means there’s probably no way we’ll get anything on the level of the early game of thrones seasons. Hopefully it’s still good though

I'd say the subverting of expectations in the early seasons is what drew in viewers, not the battles. There were none in the first two seasons, they all happened off camera. The political intrigue and expendable characters was unlike anything else and made it much watch.

The Dance of Dragons has all of that, as well as huge battles so if done right it could revive the franchise for a TV audience after the shitshow of the ending of GoT.

I'm quietly optimistic, but I'm a huge ASoIF Stan so I was always going to watch it.

In fairness Blackwater was season two and a big “holy shit I’ve never seen a battle like this on a tv show before” moment, and the show was absolutely massive then.

season three didn’t have a battle though.

still, battles aren’t a bad thing when done right. Hardhome is still probably one of the best battles I’ve seen on screen.

Hardholme is *mwah*

I always though Blackwater did a great job of giving the impression of a huge battle without showing too much. But like you say at that point it was a phenomenon, but it had managed that without the big battle scenes later seasons seemed to focus on. I'd actually say Hardholme was a huge shift for the show as it was completely made up for the show (the books there's a passing reference to the tragedy there) and it empowered D&D to Hollywood-ise the rest of the show.

Yea, that's when got was good. There were some battles, but that's not why people continued watching and then later that got distorted and they distracted people with shiny things to make them forget how terrible the writing was. I'm hoping they have a proper writing room for this show and if not at least semi-intelligent writers who can actually write intelligent characters and political intrigue without being hand held by the books.

Having the entire story mapped out with a rich lore already there should be no excuse for shitty scripts this time around.

True but it's less developed than asoiaf. However, it being an actually finished story should go a long way. Still, you can have the story but that doesn't mean the writing is intelligent. I have a bit more faith now with grrm involved. Watching the trailer makes me wonder if they're going to combine Rickon (the cc said Rickard for some reason?) and Cregan.. I don't remember who it was that pledged for Rhaenyra. I hope not but it wouldn't surprise me. Though tbf to them I'm basing this on very little.

I don't like the look of the bending the knee scene. It makes it look like the old Lords came to Kings Landing voluntarily rather than being forced to kneel in front of a very real threat of death.

Ngl, I barely remember what happened. Maybe I should reread the story before the season airs.. or maybe it's better I don't, less chances of getting annoyed at what they changed if you don't know what they changed.

Honestly, much as I enjoyed the early seasons of GOT, I have little interest in this. I'll no doubt watch it, and more than likely enjoy it but really, the travesty of GOT has left deep scars!

Production values still clearly vastly superior to the likes of The Witcher and WOT.

GRRM is involved? Of course, he loves the start of projects, not so much completing them.

What are you referring to exactly? :nervous:

That was me misremembering the earlier part of the convo to be fair. :nervous:

I wrongly remembered it as you were gonna name your daughter Khaleesi and then changed it to a Russian name when she "turned" in the show. Not saying "Russia" as a whole country is evil, but considering what's happening now, would be quite the streak.

The story is completed, the scope is grand but it is only a novella, so the producers can add more details and expand where they wish.

The dialogue in the trailer was pretty good. Still, dont know how I feel about investing my energy into this if the showrunners start writing their own shit (see The Witcher season 2 and GoT season 7-8)

They have to write their own shit, because the material the show is based on is a summary of events, with scant details/dialogues. You just don’t have the uncertainty about the ending, because it’s already there.

Looks pretty good to me. I thought the dragons were supposed to be gone (i remember them saying 100 years) for a long time yet this show appears to be not long before the GoT and they have dragons here? Maybe I’m confusing things.

The dragons died out around 150 years ago and this starts around 170 years ago.
