Television House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel) - No book spoilers allowed

Matt Smith was superb in The Crown.

I thought I was done with all things GoT after season 8, but this short trailer got me quite excited. Let’s face it we are all going to tune in on day 1, but the treshold to keep watching will be raised.

I can of get it from a show viewer only, but as book reader they potentially ruined it.
I'm just a show viewer and the last two seasons were just not the same in terms of a lot of things but the main issue were the characters all abandoning everything that came before it making it all meaningless

I think d&d would have delivered something superb had GoT books been finished as they were great at adapting source material with a few changes here and there

Anyway this looks like it will be good, it has competent people in place and the story is already written and finished I believe

Meh, I'll see what the reviews are like first. Tbh I'm tired of GOT the aesthetic as much as anything.

So what’s this about? Blackfyre rebellion?

Lord of the Rings, this and the Witcher! Going to be some good tv.
Dance of the Dragons, Viserys the First’s daughter Rhaenyera vs her brother Aegon.

Imagine if they do justice to the actual size of Balerion the Black Dread

Never understood, and still don’t understand those that furiously hate the last few seasons of GoT

I Loved season 1 right up too season 8

Of course they certainly felt in mainly ways a little rushed the last seasons but entertainment value was still second to none for me. Some say they were so heavily invested and then burned with seasons 7-8, me personally, I was so heavily invested I didn’t want the damn show to end, and currently gearing up with the Wife to watch all the seasons again after maybe a years break from this world.

Can’t wait for house of the dragon
Agreed. Though I do think the Bran stuff in the final episode was a bit crap.

The issue for Game Of Thrones was that it was essentially three different things over the course of its run.

Seasons 1 to 4: for the book readers, watching these were the equivalent to watching a Shakespeare play where they already knew the storyline and were only interested in seeing how their close the show realised their imaginations.

Seasons 5 to 6
: this was more standard fantasy fare. For a lot of people, it was different from what came before. But only in the fact there wasn't a book behind it for them to be smug about. Still great TV.

Seasons 7 to 8
: these were obviously quite different in their approach - fewer episodes with longer runtimes. But each season still lasted about 7 hours 20 minutes, which amounts to 5 hours 32 minutes more than the LOTR franchise overall. They were intended to be viewed more as feature length movies rather than serialised episodes of a show.

I can understand why some people were upset by the shift in style from one phase to the next. But as some who avoided the books and enjoys cinema as much as TV, none of it really bothered me too much. Of course, it also fun to dump on something popular to try and make yourself look clever. The Entertainment Forum would be empty without posts like that.

Can't wait for the this new show to start now.

The books didn’t end at season 4. That was only up to the third book.

Why aren't the wigs shit? I thought it had been established that the wigs always have to be shit?

Also having Doctor Who play arguably the greatest Targaryen swordsman who ever lived? I don't buy it. The guy isn't a swordsman, he's an actor.

0/10

Daenerys and her Rubiks cube braids that probably took her slave girls hand maidens 6 hours to do every morning.

Two of the oldest truths in cinema are wigs are always shit and running always looks awkward. Except for Tom Cruise, who of course built a career out of running in movies.

One of the storylines did run out of source material by season 4 from memory. The storyline of Theon being captured and then the rescue attempt wasn't in the books right? Followed then by the whole saga of the sand snakes *puke* the following season.

I don’t know; I’ll take your word for it.

Sorry for all the GoT talk instead of about this show, but just one more thing: I highly recommend AltShiftX’s latest YT video which is a biography of a central character. It’s only now after watching that that I can just about make sense of how what happened might have ultimately developed to my satisfaction. It’s over an hour long and has book spoilers, so it’s definitely not for everyone...

I may be misremembering but pretty sure Theon's story was based loosely on the books until the end of season 6.

The difference was it isn't Sansa he rescues from Ramsay as she's in the Vale still under an assumed identity. Theon's final book chapter has him jumping from the walls of Winterfell into a huge snowdrift with Jeyne Poole (fake Arya).

I like altshiftx videos, they are well done and put together. It's always a nice watch or accompanying piece

Ok, I'm ready for this world again!

The disappointment of the last two seasons of GoT has subsided somewhat. The trailer was also really good I thought. Definitely excited about this now.

Benioff and Weiss have no part in this so i don't know why anyone would be against giving this a try. If it can capture the same vibe as the early GoT seasons I'll be very happy.

To be fair the main complaint from people was something that was very likely to happen in the book anyway. I'll never understand why people were so confused with that turn of events, it spelt it out very clearly but obviously not enough for some.

I'm looking forward to this, Matt Smith plays angry and a bit unhinged very well so I'm intrigued to see him in the role.

It wasn't the turn of Dany or lesser who ended up on the throne

It was the shortened and rushed journey to it
A lot of the story points were fine, it's mostly always been about how they got there. A lot of characters doing some dumb stupid stuff where consequences didn't matter (and one of the big things that made this show is how every action had a consequence)

This show has the advantage of being complete I believe so there's a start and end with a defined journey where it will be translated across rather than what GoT was

Is this about the Blackfyre rebellion?

Dance of the Dragons, Viserys the First’s daughter Rhaenyera vs her brother Aegon.

From the trailer I got the impression Balerion is dead, because there’s a scene where there standing in front of a huge dragon skull, unless if it’s not a skull but head

I agree. It was shown very early that Daenerys was instinctively drawn to burning things down and had to think about how to act good, or often be advised about what good would be.

In contrast someone like John Snow was always instinctively good

I found him to be such an awful character in the end; a massive aspect of that was the writing but i don't think the actor had any chemistry with Daenerys at all which really made the scenes suffer. Also, there's just no way in hell that he gets out of doing what he did without being killed on the spot and there were lots of other moments where the plot just seemed to find new ways of writing him out of an impossible situation.

You’re right. About the lack of chemistry between the two actors.

From what I’ve read GRR Martin has said the ending is pretty much what he has planned. But it’s fair to say the show rushed it and could have done with an extra 2 seasons.

My theory for why Jon wasn’t killed.

1) The Dothraki are loyal to the strongest, once Danaery’s was killed and the dragon flew off with her they no longer cared and just wanted to go home. If anything it would have been in their nature to then start following Jon…
2) The Unsullied cared and wanted Jon to face punishment but new that killing him would start a war with the north and surviving houses. So they hoped he’d get punished but when he didn’t Grey Worn as angry as he was knew it would be a futile battle.

Also Grey Worm already had visiting Narth to protect the passive islanders of his dead gf as a priority. The people of Narth are pure pacifist and often get plundered, raped and slaughtered by pirates and other cities etc. So he’s new cause was to go and protect them.

You are right indeed, I have to brush up on my ASOIAF lores. Vhagar was the last one left of the original 3 by the time of the Dance, he/she was said to have grown nearly as large as Balerion when he was alive though, so my point still stand.

I'm annoyed grey worm and the unsullied didn't take onion knights advice of trying to start their own house with their dickless breeding

After post season 5 GOT, I am sceptical about any piece of ASOIAF fiction not written by GRRM.

The Dothraki didn't follow Jon though and the Unsullied only knew suicidal loyalty to Dany. Also the massive dragon seeing its mum killed decides to vent it's anger not on the killer...but on the only chair in the room :wenger: There was a really weird and contrived insistence that Jon survives at any cost that seemed out of keeping with the GoT world where mistakes are fatal.

Honestly, I don't think i'm one of those people that looks for faults and makes a huge and unnecessary big deal out of them when I'd prefer to be entertained by a great story but that final series really didn't sit well with me. I felt a bit sorry for the amazing actors having to work with that script.

Most GOT thing ever to make you wait almost a full year after the release of the teaser
