Gaming Hollow Knight - GOAT Metroidvania

Can someone give me tips on the quickest and easiest way to complete the main campaign? I've just realised there are charms... What the feck are these? Hahaha any help would be appreciated!

Use the progression route guide on Fextra. I just prefer using at a pinpointer on how which area to go to explore and progress the story.

I just died on the very last platform against The Radiance . Some people are just made for bad luck. I started the climb with 4 masks, how on earth did I mess that up?

That's rough but you should be close if you've got 4 masks in the last phase.

I've just unlocked Pure Vessel, so now I have something new to get my teeth into.

I'm still loving this game in the Pantheons. Scratches that itch for reaction/pattern recognition gaming, and it's giving me a good break from my Tetris routine.

I just noticed one Steam trophy for 112% no death. Seriously feck that.

Yeah I'll get it tonight, it doesn't seem unreasonably hard. Plus the fight right before it has become pretty much trivial now.

Some of the players are truly hardcore. There's a YT video out there of a guy doing a hitless fifth pantheon.

Yeah I don't think they've seen daylight in months.

Also is this easier on a keyboard as compared to a ps4 controller. I only played this after it came on ps+.
It might be easier combining sideways movement with a slash down with your left hand on WASD I guess. It's probably the thing I manage to mess up most, slashing sideways when I want to pogo on an enemy or trap, leading to damage. I've tried both dpad and joystick and I still can't decide.

The best thing I did was remapping my attack to R1 though, it makes platforming while charging a nail art so much more natural. I also moved the dash from R2 to L1. It's so much more comfortable: left thumb on movement, left index finger on dash, right thumb on jump and right index on attack. The default layout isn't great.

The Radiance is down! This time I managed to get his platform phase without getting hit, but still took quite a few during that one. At least I didn't get hit during the climb. Still 107%, I thought I'd go up one. The only paths left to me now are Trail of Fools, Path of Pain and Godhome. I guess the early pantheons are probably doable.

How have people found the delicate flower quest? I never managed it on past attempts. Does it count towards completion?

Anything that improves range and damage output is great, so Mark of Pride, Longnail, Quickslash, Grubberfly Elegy (you need to stay at full health anyway), Unbreakable Strength. I imagine spells will also work nicely. Just take it slow. You'll want the reward.

112% Woot. 80h 23m. Down to my last mask on Pure Vessel.

I'll try and unlock these last few bosses/variations but I don't think the last Pantheon is getting done.

Pretty sick. I'm already well over your hours total on 107%. I can see myself getting to 109-110%, maybe. Working on Trial of Fools at the moment, just taking it easy, focusing more on learning each round, enemy spawn points etc instead of trying to get as far as possible. It's going to take me a while.

Did you do Path of Pain by the way?

No I've still got Path of Pain to try and a few other things. I might try a speed run and Steel Soul while my enthusiasm is still up, and I'll try the White Defender variations. Might let Zote die next run too. This extra stuff is all good fun but it's not worth killing yourself over. If you haven't done Nightmare King Grimm then he is a really fun boss to work through. hard but fair, unlike Zote. The Pantheons stuff I'd only recommend if that Hollow Knight itch still needs scratching.

I think I'm going to try and get my PS4 controller working with my PC before I attempt Path of Pain though because the analogue stick won't cut it and the Xbox360 d-pad isn't going to either, given all the precision down slashing you supposedly have to do.

Put a dream gate where you get the white flower. Then walk the route before you get the flower and kill everything. Teleport back. DO NOT use a bench, get the flower and everything will be dead bar one or two really weak enemies. Walk the route again with grubberly elegy and unless you get him by a projectile from an astrid in the forgotten caverns its piss easy and you kill everything in 2 hit. None of the upgraded enemies respawn and only little things do, like astrids, the little green floaty thing in Queens Gardens etc.. but none of the bigger enemies. I believe the only potential damage on my route was the spitty things in the fungal wastes where you have to drop down and a tiny bit of the fog caverns where you have to dodge the big jellyfish things after leaving queens station.

Oh man that no floor part in Trial of Fools just wrecks me. I might actually have to go for Hiveblood here, though giving up 4 notches is painful. I should probably learn to live without Quick Focus.

I finally made it through the no floor section in Trial of Fools with two masks only to be spammed to death by loodles on that small platform. I can pretty much get to that no floor section with full masks but it quickly spirals out of control. I feel like I'm one good run through that part away from beating the thing, it's just such a time sink.

After about 8 hours of attempts on Trial of Fools over several days, I just made it to the boss for the first time. And I died. This is were you start questioning life decisions. I just feel empty. Completely drained. I want to give up video games for life.

I keep hearing about these trials... I know I no longer have the reaction times to do these based off what I hear about them. These aren't a part of the main campaign right?

You can safely ignore them for the most part. There are couple of useful rewards behind the first two but they are very doable with mid-game upgrades and charms and become fairly straightforward by the end of the game. It's the third one, the Trial of Fools, that drives everyone to madness.

Then again, I consider myself a distinctly average gamer with very little ability and reflexes. The only thing I have is a measure of foolish perseverance. And boy is it being tested right now.

If I skip these can I still complete the game or will it be really difficult?

You are insane.

Once you are done with this try the randomizer mod.

You'll be fine but once you're close to the end of the game, you might want to attempt the first two trials anyway.

No fecking way! The only thing that gives me a fighting chance in this trial is knowing every exact spawn point and great slashing the worst enemies into obvlivion before they get a chance to move. I can do pretty much every part of this trial on auto pilot by now. And I still can't finish it!

I just can't fecking believe it, I've now already died three times against Godtamer, each time with full health and soul. I simply can't deal with this boss after all that build-up.

Edit: Finally! I did it! Beat Godtamer with one mask remaining. I thought I was going to die again so just spammed spells in a desperate attempt. Damn I'm glad that's over with, that took a lot. I'm not sure if I'm up for anything else after that...

Have you tried Path of Pain yet? I've just done the first part, and by that I mean just reaching safe ground after the first sequence and... Well holy shit! It's pretty absurd. Definitely go dpad, that's what I'm using on the PS4. I had to do it over and over again to build up muscle memory, but it's manageable.

Now just the rest of it...

Well done. I died once to Godtamer and then practised them in Godhome to completion, it would have broken my spirit if I did that whole thing and died again.

I've put it down for a bit but will try and unlock these last few bosses in the final pantheon, then set up the PS4 pad. Are you using Hiveblood on Path Of Pain, it's a must right?

Did you know there is a quick spell cast button? I just found it: R1 on my set up. It saves a few frames from the standard focus soul button.

I'm using a combo of Hiveblood, Grubsong and Deep Focus, it can sustain you endlessly. There are actually quite a few soul totems that never run out, but better safe than sorry.

Yeah I found out about quick cast when remapping my controls but I though it was exactly the same as tapping the soul button. Since I've remapped attack to R1, I don't have a quick cast button anymore. If it's really faster, it might be useful for panic Desolate Dive casts, as I never really seem to cast these fast enough to escape unavoidable damage.

I've said before that some people are just made for bad luck, and here we are again. Took me about 8 hours to get through Path of Pain and I died against the enemies at the end. I'm back at the start. I went from utter joy that I finally completed the last section after several hours of relentless attempts, to complete despair and numbness at dying. I just don't know where I've gone wrong in my life.

Mate tbh I don't know how you keep on keeping on... It's supposed to be fun and enjoyable. I can only imagine how it feels.

Go and get laid, pissed or stoned.

It was sort of fun, because I felt like I was getting closer. Having that progress wiped out is tough. I know I like to exaggerate a little bit in this thread, it's all in the context of a video game. My life isn't suddenly ruined or anything. But this might be the point where I put it down.

I quit the game after not being able to beat the Soul Master after a few tries. You are surely at another level to us mere mortals.

Fair enough, come back to it much later.
I made some dinner and returned to it, managed to complete it this time in about 30 minutes. It's incredible how much better you get at it. Still almost fecked up against the Kingsmould at the end, but just spammed spells.

Hell no, it's completely hidden away, doesn't give a trophy, doesn't even contribute to your completion percentage and rewards you with only the tiniest piece of lore. It's totally pointless.

I don't know, maybe I like suffering.

Christ, it really takes superhuman levels of patience and dedication to give it that much amount of time! :lol

@Ainu attempt this.

I don't even want to know how many times he had to attempt that. Forget about hitless, I don't even know if I'm ever going to attempt any of the harder pantheons normally. If anyone here will get it, it'd be @dumbo. It all seems too much of a slog to me. I'd have to practice each of the harder bosses several hours to even think about it.

Very cool. I've just got the PS4 dualshock running now and am getting used to the dpad (much better control but less fluidity than the analogue stick). I break from work tomorrow so I might put aside half the day to attempting this.

I've done most of the bosses on Radiant now, working out some successful strats for some of the tougher ones, in Godhome and feel I can get to Absolute Radiance with a bit of luck. Then it'll be a case of practising her for a while. Unless of course I do the whole thing in one go of course, eek.
