Gaming Hollow Knight - GOAT Metroidvania

Been playing Celeste. Loving it. Simple but challenging.

Not sure it's your thing as it's a bit like White Palace... But the whole game.
Yeah I was watching a mod map video the other day where they kept mentioning Celeste while making their way through white palace like routes. I watched Celeste gameplay, looks neat. My reference for it was Towerfall which is one of the most fun multiplayer games I've played so I was hoping there would be similar combat here as well, which I loved in that. But the platforming looks interesting as well, as long as there's not fecking pogo-ing on moving spikes and shit.

So Fire did this map a couple of days back. Basically a ramped up version of White Palace, which as per her him was more difficult that the impossible mod they did a while back. At one point there are spikes hidden in the clouds that you cannot see, and your player hidden in the clouds that you cannot see and you have to fecking bounce from one to another, literally not seeing anything. Like why stop there, why not put a blindfold on and have a bunch of black mambs slowly crawl towards your balls while playing it, just makes it more challenging right?!

But other than that really absurd phase, it was actually a good watch. I appreciate Fire's presentation style and how he explains his thought process, and there were a lot of good spots on this map that required genuine problem solving skills, with of course some absolute brutal and cruel splits as well. The Path of Pain version of this was more like Path of getting ass fecked with all the spikes in the map at the same time. There were a couple of spots which took this guy like 30-40 mins to get past, imagine what others would do. But overall, pretty good and ultimately do-able for those who have completely mastered the actual game.

On a side note you can surely make some money joining these guys and attempting some of these challenges, @dumbo !

Haha no pogo stuff here and if you die, you instantly respawn in the same bit so it's a proper pick up and play game.

I'm already halfway through the story mode but then there's b sides (which I'll attempt) and c sides (which I doubt I'll have the skills for).

After this game, onto Cuphead!

I did just run a casual 112% Steel Soul in under 14 hours but I don't think I'll ever join the extreme runners. Measuring splits, menu glitching and damage skipping is just too much hassle. And I have no real desire to stream. I might try to refine my route and go for a sub 5 hour 112% run next, just because I'm still enjoying playing it. I definitely intend to download the mod pack when I find out how to secure my main save. It looks like a lot of fun. But in terms of achievements I think I'm pretty much done. I got gud enough for my own satisfaction.

I can certainly see why it has such an obsessive following. The gameplay is so smooth and pleasurable. For comparison sake, I just completed Ori and the Blind Forest and while it's a very well made game, with some clever mechanics, I have no desire to play it again or go back for the extras. Hollow Knight is my jam.

'casual 112% steel soul run' ok mate.

Yeah it's a really joyful experience and there's still so many possibilities to mod it.

I'm probably gonna get on Hades next. I don't have a Switch so it will have to be my sorry old macbook that runs it but let's see. Looks fantastic from the little I saw.

feck me you're like the Bruno Fernandes of this thread

Played Celeste or Cuphead? Did you find these harder than HK?

It was all down to having to forge my skills in the fires of Godhome. It sort of broke the main campaign difficulty .

Celeste is slightly easier than the main HK completion, Cuphead is harder. If you did the Radiance then you shouldn't have a problem with either. With Celeste though you need a proper d-pad because it makes use of precise directional up and down inputs. I did it on the XBox 360 controller (worst d-pad ever) and I had some frustrating moments. Knackered my thumb on the analogue stick.

I'm feeling that I might go back to Celeste now that I have the PS4 pad hooked up and get the extra apples.

I completed Celeste handheld on the Switch and I only remember one bit at the end which was really frustrating.

Does that include the B Sides and C Sides?

I'm currently on chapter 4 and it seems a lot easier than Hollow Knight.

Yes, finding Celeste ok, but as I said above, havent tried those B Sides and C Sides yet. I'm playing with the switch on handheld mode so maybe a proper pad would make it even easier... Funnily enough, I didn't find Radiance that hard (if you're talking about her in the main campaign). Nightmare Grimm though still gives me the shivers. Now that's a bloody tough boss!

Not really. Some of them I did.
It gets progressively harder, but of you can do Hollow Knight Celeste shouldn't be an issue.

Died more times trying to get the charm notch in fog canyon than against most bosses :') im debating whether or not I should activate the grimm troupe.
Still need to do the Colloseum of Fools, Watcher's spire, tower of love, Hornet two then I can go into the abyss and whatever awaits me there, get the shadecloak and explore the areas I wasn't able to access. Still need to do the dreamers. And the flowerquest. Only vessel fragment I have left is the one in Deepnest, might try and get it if I'm really bored and have too much time at hand. Accidentally got the endgame spoiled (I think) which was annoying but there's so much still left to do I'm sure I'll keep busy for a long while yet.

How do you know what's coming up?

How do you know what's coming up?

I've watched a lot of HK videos on youtube and read stuff on the wiki, mostly in my search for mask shards, vessel fragments, pale ore, things like that.

Yeah that was a fecking dangerous area.

There's no debate. Some of the best content in the game is in that DLC. You'd really REALLY want the rewards as well.
hmm okay, I guess I'll activate next time if I don't forget. I've barely seen anything about it except people complaining about Nightmare King Grimm so I'm curious to see what it's about and slightly apprehensive about the fight. I should practise my spells cause I've barely used them all game but I know they're better for some bossfights than the nail.

Every time I think I must be nearing the end I discover more stuff to do. I haven't really seen as much endgame stuff so I'm curious to see how it all plays out.

Don't worry about nightmare king Grimm, he is a totally optional boss.

Yea I'll give it a try for completion sake but if it's too frustrating I'll move on. Though I still have a long way to go before I even get to it. Gotta finish the Hive first and then I'll go and see what's up in the Abyss now that I've beaten Hornet 2 and then go through the rest of my to do list.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who laughed out loud at reading that. Casual sub 14 hour 112%.

You don't even have to fight Nightmare King Grimm for completion sake, you can fully finish the DLC without ever fighting him. Only Troupe Master Grimm is required but that's a fun, doable fight. Challenging in its own right but nowhere near the Nightmare version.

Okay good to know. I enjoy the roaming around and discovering but not a huge fan of struggling through hours of boss fights.

I'm 7 hours into my sub-5 hour run. I've made a total mess of it. I went to the King's door without the seal and then the lifeblood cave with only 14 lifebloods. Lots of pointless backtracking and I also forgot which shards I had. I'm still a couple of hours away if all goes well. The hubris.

Rain World is on sale on Steam for £5.99 if anyone is interested. I haven't played it but I've noticed a big fanbase crossover with Hollow Knight. I just picked it up myself.

The game design looks beautiful from the trailer. I started playing Hades, but that seems it's going to be a never ending kinda experience so can check something out on the side. Cheers!

I'm now in uncharted territory. I've basically done everything I know about or have seen images of. Still need to do the flower quest but apart from that I've done everything on the map except for defeating traitor lord and getting half of kingsoul so up next after that would be white palace since I've just beaten all the dreamers. Then on to the temple of the black egg I guess. It's really been a great experience. Don't know what I'll do with my free time once I've finished it :')

Absolutely. That experience was simply wonderful and it will take an exceptional game to replicate that. I moved on to Hades which was rated quite highly and while it is a super fun mindless action it doesn't come close to the all round experience of Hollow knight including both the combat and exploration.

it's great they've added Pantheons as an additional challenge but even that doesn't really fulfill the itch to come across new areas and go about things in new ways. Gotta really credit the devs as there's rarely anyone who plays this and doesn't come out with neverending praise.

I know mate, I went through withdrawal after finishing it. I tried many games, nothing cured the itch. I'm playing Celeste now, finally a game I'm actually enjoying...

Have you done the Trial of Fools and Path of Pain? Those are the only things I didn't do... Oh and the pantheons, but that didn't interest me at all.

Finally beat traitor lord, the sob! Flower quest up next for my final mask shard and then I won't have anything left to do storywise but white palace and the final bosses.

Can't imagine not enjoying this. I struggled a bit in the beginning and there's definitely some frustrating moments but man, is it worth it! Its large fanbase is fully deserved. The devs really did an amazing job and deserve all the praise they get. It really ticks all the boxes, design, playability, characters, etc. Hoping for Silksong soon, almost can't imagine it being better but I'm hoping it's at least as good!

Yea, might just play something familiar and totally different cause I feel like anything else will just disappoint. Can't wait for silksong, though with all the built up hype I hope it's gonna deliver. I can't imagine it won't.

Nope, only done the first two trials so far. Pantheons aren't my thing either... I mostly just enjoy exploring, collecting things, learning more about the story and characters as I go along. Did enjoy some of the bosses tbf but I wouldn't willingly put myself through the pantheons! I'd have to get really desperate to try path of pain, I enjoyed "beating" some of the platforming but that's too much for me, especially since I'm not great at pogo'ing in the first place.

I thought this but after doing some mad platforming on Celeste, I think I may have levelled up and might go back to this and try it. My issue is that I play on the Switch handheld using the stupid little analogue stick, which makes precision go out the window...

I have no idea how I've managed to finish Hollow Knight and a lot of Celeste playing like this

I may need to stop being lazy and whip out the proper controller I have.

Did the flowerquest today. Even died once because I decided to continue after the flower broke just to clear the way of enemies which ended up being pointless because I died trying to get back out of the room cause I somehow forgot about the dream gate I set and completely failed at the platforming. Then the game was glitching because my shade was waiting right at the entrance to the room and somehow it transported me to a black screen and the time after that the flower broke right at the final thorny bit which pissed me tf off cause I never hit that one except that one time.. of course then I tried to practise it and kept smashing into the thorns :') at least I have the final mask shard now, managed to get all the grubs and gave elderbug a flower too.

Also feck bretta and feck zote even more, he will not shut up. Stop ruining the peace and quiet of Dirtmouth with your bs.

Yea, I'd definitely get out the controller, don't know how you got it done on such a finicky little thing without it but props to you! But a controller is definitely a must I think for path of pain, especially if you don't hate yourself or want to hate yourself :') Can't hurt giving it a try I guess, I'll see how I feel after finishing white palace which I just started today, and by started I mean I went inside, sat on the bench and saved the game cause the flower quest already took ages.

I whipped out the controller yesterday. The stage that was taking hours on the analogue stick in Celeste got completed in 2 attempts. So much better!

Good luck with path of pain mate! I wish it added a percentage to the completion. As it stands, there's no reason to go through it... Except bragging rights of course.

I absolutely wanted to beat him 4 times so at least his shitty fan girl would pack up and leave, but even after that he still doesn't shut up. He just continues blabbering about his precepts without an audience. Seeing Bretta fall on her arse each time you defeat him is great though.

Might give it a try in between this white palace bs though from what I've heard of that fight it won't be a way to get rid of my frustrations with failing :') a shame you can't just hit him around in dirtmouth to shut him up.

For 45 mins I've been stuck on the bit in white palace with those idiotic white flying things that enjoy smashing me into a saw when I fail to jump around them or to hit them with my nail. I've given up for today and hope I'll somehow make it through next time I play. I think that's the last "round" in white palace before going to the king and it's basically the only thing I've got left to do in the game apart from fighting the final bosses.

Nice! Yea a controller is a lot more precise and just feels better in your hands.

Honestly, with how long some bits in white palace are taking me, not sure if I'll ever attempt it. Not sure how much I'd enjoy hours smashing into saws and waiting for the hiveblood charm to do its job.

I got pretty frustrated with the White Palace and still ended up sort of enjoying Path of Pain in a weird way. I think the key thing for me was that I didn't look at it as a thing I had to get through, but as something to challenge myself with. I actually wanted to do it. If you're just going to do it for completion sake, I think it would drive you crazy.

Yeah the withdrawal is hitting quite hard. Doesn't help that I keep watching whatever new funny stuff the streamers are doing like all their modded maps and stuff. I feel like I sound like a moron saying this but after finishing the white palace once you feel like it would have been fun if there was more of that in the game. It's painful but also quite fair especially a lot of the hard points have alternative ways of crossing them (saw one of the points i was stuck at for ages in a video later after I had crossed it and there was a really easy way to bypass it, pissed me right off. ). But yeah overall it's something you feel wanting more of!

That's right after the entry point to Path of Pain right. Yeah I hated that too. I basically just ended up jumping through the space between the moron bugs and the saws. There is a bit of RNG as those guys float randomly so if you feel they are too close to the saw just smack them from below before starting. They generally give a bit of room. That's only for the first bug so you just have to pray for the second bug to give a bit of room to make the second jump. The third one is usually is kinda away but that jump is pretty tricky. Definitely one of the time taking spots in that palace. The first time I gave up a bit beyond that point. There are 2-3 tricky spots after that area but then it's kinda clear.

Also unless you have to switch charms it's better to not sit on any benches after making it this far. Just so you can quickly quit and exit out if you get burnt out and wanna do something else in the game, without having to make your way back past the same shit you had crossed earlier just to get back . I'm assuming you've gone in with Hiveblood and Grubsong so there shouldn't be any need to use the bench to regain health or soul.

When I see all the mods people use I wanna get it on my laptop too and play around with it. There's a lot of great content out there and a very active community so even if you've finished playing the game there's a lot of fun stuff to watch and do.

I was watching a video and the guy showed that there's a area right next to a bunch of saws that you can just desolate dive through. But I guess that's the lesson of hollow knight, to always check your surroundings! I do actually agree, it's frustrating at points but the two areas I've done now I feel like they're hard but once you get the hang of it and get in the right mindset they're doable, challenging but enjoyable. And you can clearly see your progress which helps in making it through the rough parts. People complain that it was too hard because its so different from the rest of the game but if you got all the shards and grubs etc you've already had some rough areas to get through, just not as much of it at once. Of course the other areas had more natural obstacles and not buzzing saws and spikes that move in and out of the walls. But to me it doesn't feel out of place in the game.

Yep, right above the entry to path of pain. I'm usually able to get up there but then smash right into that third wingmould, or the thorns or the saw. And if I do manage to get through there I either can't get through the spikes or fail at pogoing on the wingmoulds and drop down. I did see a way I hadn't tried before in a walkthrough so hopefully I'll manage to get through it that way. I've basically done everything in the game already except for some very minor things so at this point I just wanna get to the bench above the wingmoulds so that I can then tackle the rest of white palace in one go without having to deal with that bs again cause yesterday I was trying for 45 mins without managing to get there and at that point you don't wanna do the rest of it anymore. At least with a bench I'll know that when I get back into it I won't have to do that bit again. The funny thing is that at first I didn't even think it looked that hard but it's taken me longer than anything else in white palace so far :')
