Hernanes

Will be interesting to see how he does in Europe.

Well he's doing bloody well!

But if the headline-writers were able to proclaim on Saturday that it was Lazio, not Inter, who looked like the best side in the world then Moratti, too, has to take his share of the blame. Not for the first time this season Lazio were inspired by Hernanes, the summer signing from São Paulo who has taken Serie A by storm. A player who the Times ranked in January 2009 as the most promising in the entire world. A player who should have belonged to Inter.

The Nerazzurri had secured a first option on Hernanes in the spring, but when Serie A's rules were changed in the summer to prevent teams from signing more than one player from outside the EU, they decided to go in a different direction, signing the 18-year-old Coutinho from Vasco de Gama instead. Out yesterday with an injury, Coutinho has shown enough promise to suggest he may yet have an exciting future at Inter. Hernanes, though, is enjoying a thrilling present.

Depending on your source, Hernanes is either the "new Kaka", "another Deco" or the "Brazilian Andrea Pirlo". Such comparisons are rarely helpful but the fact they are being made is a tribute to the composure and grace with which he dictates play from the centre of the park. All through his childhood, Hernanes used to sleep hugging a football so that he would know where it was when he woke up. With such familiarity, it should perhaps come as no surprise that player and ball seem so comfortable in each other's company.

On Friday the Brazilian was at the heart of everything for Lazio. Mauro Zárate might have drawn more attention for the manner he tormented the 18-year-old right-back Felice Natalino, but while he was also superb it was Hernanes pulling the strings. It was the Brazilian's header, parried by Luca Castellazzi but never properly cleared, that allowed Giuseppe Biava to put Lazio ahead, his perfect cross-field pass that put Zárate in for the second, and his free-kick which settled the game just when Inter had been threatening to snatch an equaliser.

The match was Hernanes's 58th of 2010, but unlike an Inter team still recovering from their treble campaign, he denied any sense of exhaustion. "I wouldn't even dream of saying I'm that," he insisted when asked if he wasn't feeling a little tired. "I'm a young man."

Benítez, by contrast, looks older by the week.

He was class against Inter, very strong in posession and inventive with his passing.

The Brazilian Carrick.

He's got so much more in his locker than Carrick.
His technique and dribbling ability is at another level. You'll see him make defenders look stupid in pretty much every match - he's been a revelation this season.

A very classy player.

"Hernandes?"
"Hernanes"
"Welcome to Old Trafford Hernandes"
"It's Hernanes"
"come again?"
"Hernanes"
"Her name's what? I don't see any her"
"No, my name's Hernanes, not Hernandes"
".................................no it isn't"
"Yes it is"
"It can't be. That's stupid"
"Why does this happen everywhere I go?"
"Youre probably mispronouncing it"
"sigh"
"Come on, I'll introduce you to our Mexican striker...he's got the same name as you"
"Hernanes?"
"It's a he, and his name's Hernandes"
"feck sake"

Would anyone say no to him?

I read he is not renewing his contract at Lazio.

Is he a lot better than Cleverley or just better?
Will be 29 when his contract is up.

 feck me that's awful

I've been impressed with him every time I've seen him. Which is a grand total of about 3 times.

He's a beast of a player. He was instrumental in Lazio's good form and Cup win towards the end of the last season.

I don't know if it was in this thread that I said, but he's awesome. Heart of Lazio. Originally a box to box, but can play a more forward role, uses both feet, and has a cannon shot. He's awesome, was in my top three targets along with Paulinho and Herrera last window.

He went through a Pirlo-like transformation. Was originally a #10 but converted him to a deep-lying playmaker.

How is his game outside goals, his passing? Is he tough? Does he move around well? A few years ago the Telegraph had him as the best talent in the world he was 24, still at Sao Paulo.

He has a great passing range and there's no doubting his toughness. He's not the most mobile player ever but he has decent movement on and off the ball. He's like a hybrid version of Vieira and Pirlo, but with better long range shooting.

Thanks, high praise there. He is getting on so it's this summer or never for a big move imo. How good is Radja Nainggolan.

Hernanes, I might be a little suspicious about him. Like him a lot. Mobile, tough, great passing and vision. And shoots with both. Pretty much complete, and underrated imo.

Nainggolan, I've watched Catania a few times, and he didn't stand out for me. Good player, can put a tackle, but nothing that impressed me. Incredibly both times I saw an entire game, he scored. Against Inter, and I think it was Atalanta. The latter was his best performance for me.

I would love it, if it was true for the money that is being quoted, but sadly I have to refer to my pessimistic side ,nah that's too sensible for the transfer forum.
Go get him Edward ,stop looking in your Panini sticker album and sign someone you twonk.

Would be nice to have someone who can score from range  From our current crop of midfielders, Carrick is probably the only one who's scored a few from range and even those are rare!

Probably the best out of the players we have been linked with for a possible January move. There hasn't been anything to suggest we are in for him though right?

Watching now, incidentally, away to Udinese. He's been running things for the second half.

I agree Hernanes would be a great buy but, as you say, no indication we are in for him (sadly).

Just scored a cracking goal from outside of the box.

Celebrated with a Nani-style backflip.
