Somewhere in your mind, touching a nerve
I earn $450 per month, at least until this july when I resume my studies. I plan to buy either an xbox 360 or a ps3, but am not sure if my budget allows for it. Basically I'm looking at the Xbox 360 arcade, but I'm not very sure if its good considering it does not come with a hard disk and I am a moderate gamer. The pricing for the different consoles in my country is as follows:

Xbox 360 Arcade - $459
Xbox 360 Pro - $649
PS3(40GB) - $559

Also games for the 360 costs between $60 - 80 while games for the PS3 cost between $70 and $100.

So I need some advice. Do I

a) Get an Xbox 360 arcade and not download any of that online content as I don't have a hard disk.

b) Get an Xbox 360 arcade and then buy a hardisk seperately(costs around $100).

c) Get an Xbox 360 Pro.

d) Get a PS3 and spend a bomb on games.

e) Get a modified version of an Xbox 360 Arcade/Pro and play backups(its just a thought, I have not done it:D) so that I can save on games.

e) feck it and not buy anything.

360 pro if you can afford it but then you'll have to fork out for games and Xbox Live

PS3's online service is free whereas Xbox's isn't, so factor that into your pricing. Also, Xboxs tend to have a lifespan of only a few months if you're lucky so getting a modified one will mean you'll void your waranty and be left an expensive plastic brick once it fails. Having said that, the 360 has the better games and gets better support from MS than the PS3 gets from Sony in the West.

All in all, I'd say that unless the PS3 starts getting some killer apps in the next few months or MS's new Xbox revision proves to be reliable, I'd stick with e). Your budget appears to be limited and both consoles look like gambles atm.

450 a month? you are poor, i don't think we should be talking

i mean, i'm not royalty, but almost ... Marcos I

Find someone who'll buy one for you in exchange for certain deeds, like a bored housewife or that creepy uncle who lives on his own and always upsets the children at family reunions.

Personally I'd go for the PS3, it is more reliable, online play is free, it is well worth the value and it has got plenty of AAA exclusives due out this year, and at $90 cheaper than the 360 Pro, there really is only one choice.

As far as i understand it, if you mod your xbox you lose access to xbox live

I don't play games online anyway, so I'm not really woried about losing xbox live. I am worried about getting the red ring of death and not having a warranty if I mod it.

There is no worry about it, the RROD is a certainty. Also it depends on your preference of gaming, but I would go for the shiny black 40GB PS3.

Will most games be released on both the ps3 and 360 platforms? Or will the ps3 have its own set of games and the 360 its own?

PS3 Exclusives 08:

SOCOM: Confrontation
Tekken 6
MGS4: Guns of The Patriots
Getaway 3
Motorstorm 2
Infamous
Wardevil
Haze (May be pushed back to 2009)
Gran Turismo 5
Killzone 2
Resistance 2
LittleBigPlanet
Home
Prototype

360 Exclusives 08:

Splinter Cell Conviction
Halo Wars
GOW 2

Other games such as RSV2, DMC4, GTAIV are all multi-platform (Although if you want to play DMC4 and GTAIV without loading times, you will need a HDD to install around 5GB of data to it)

No it's not.

You seem to also have forgotten the fact that the XB360 already has a load of exclusives out for it.

You can also now download movies and previous XB games on the marketplace. Along with the arcade games. Something for everyone.

You buy a PS3, it's a no brainer! One reason being that you you will still be using it in 5 years.

Buying a 360 at this point in time would be a very silly thing to do, and that is the truth.
Having bought a PS3 a few months ago, can you explain why I would've been an idiot if I had purchased a 360?

It's just an interesting statement you've made there.

Ok, then there is anywhere between a 10 and 40% chance of getting the RROD.

The reason I didn't mention the 360 exclusives already put is becuase I was listing the ones due out in 2008, hence the reason I didn't list the PS3's either. Being able to read things correctly will help on a forum.

You have nothing to back that percentage up and it's just a figure that is floating around on the web. Your percentage also seems to have risen an extra 10% since the last time it was mentioned as well.

I shall be back at 11 tonight after work to discuss this further.

The 360's that were originally shipped back at it's launch had around a 33% failure rate, some say lower, some say slightly higher, but analysts agree that it is a round the 33% mark, even the new ones that are now being shipped still have around a 10% failure rate, these are the facts, there is no point in disputing them, just accept that the XBOX 360 is a poorly designed console which was rushed in order to get it to market before the PS3 and the Wii, which are both much more reliable than the 360.

I hope you had a good day at work:)

Some serious differences in engineering and build quality there. The XB360 looks like a homemade airfix kit!

I'd just wait until Microsoft comes out with their improved model, as they always do. My original XBox was seemingly made at a high school technology class, whereas the seond one I bought was a much better machine.

But by that time, the PS3 will probably have more than 2 good games to play on it, and would probably be the better choice.

Microsoft shouldn't have to come out with an improved model, their original model should have been reliable, but it wasn't, and they're still shipping out below par 360's.

And there are more than two games to play on the PS3.

For budget reasons you clearly have to go with an 360. Games are much more plentiful and you can get new and used for a lot cheaper and easier.

Otherwise, I always say go by the exclusives because the ports will always be virtually identical. Go with reviews on numerous sites, upcoming titles and obviously word of mouth (though most people will be fanboyish rather than give unbiased advice). Pick those you want to play most and get that machine.

I don't think that will be the case come the end of the year. Currently, as it stands, the XB360, although a decent gaming machine, is horrible value for money. Trouble is, Microsoft I do not think want to place an XB360 SKU lower than the price of the Wii, and as it's going, Nintendo have absolutely no requirement to drop its way over the top inflated pricepoint on that technical monstrosity.

Chalk and cheese.

However, the Xbox will still have more games available, and will definitely have more used games knocking around by whatever timeframe you want.

Personally, I buy consoles for the games. As much as I don't like it as a technical piece of equipment, I've just chosen to take one over the PS3 free with my new phone, for the high amount and low cost of the games.

That, it is not. The Wii is an excellent piece of technology, extremely well built and refined. Agreed it's a high price for what's actually inside the box, but then again it half the price of the other machines and gives you the same (in not more in some cases) game playing experience.

PS3 definitely.

Sell some junks on ebay like your own jeans or dvds to raise cash for games later.
