Hector Herrera

Still looks mostly average to me. Has he been any better than Guardado who Valencia loaned out to get him off the wage bill? I dont really think so
Guardado is playing another position now than with his 2 clubs, who played him as LB; he has had two great performances thus far in the World Cup in midfield.

Correct. He has played really well in the two games so far. I would take him here.

I think thats classic nonsense. Guardado's had a couple of as you'd expect performances in an average side. If he was a good enough central midfielder for Manchester United, then he wouldn't be a failed left winger converted to average left back at Valencia or gone out on loan only to barely get a game for Leverkusen.

Instead he'd be playing central midfield for Valencia or someone else for 30 games a season.

Guardado is just doing a job for a team where only a couple of players are good enough to standout.

Herrera was terrible for Porto this season. That said, almost every player was, even usual good performers, so it's harsh to judge him so soon, but I'm not really convinced yet. We need him to come good next season, so hopefully it happens.

Also don't think international competitions are that good to gauge players.

On Guardado, I think he's a bit shit and is nowhere near Manchester United quality.

I think Herrera has played well, but Arruda above me is saying he had a bad season so we shouldn't get too carried away. He also played well vs Portugal in the warm up matches.

I like Guardado but he isn't good enough for United, really. He wouldn't kill us playing CM in a 4-3-3, but wouldn't help us either. He's mid-table Prem quality.

He's actually sort of similar to Di Maria or Older Giggs in that they're wingers who use that agility to good effect in the middle, but just nowhere near the quality of those two. He'd be a good signing for Newcastle or a team like that.

As a Mexican and regular watcher of Guardado, I don't rate him anymore. He holds on to the ball for too long and fails to recognize the play when it's forming. By the time he should pass he hesitates and catches the striker either in an offside position or the defender is there to take care of the ball. He is good at set pieces though.

Herrera is a favorite in the Mexican squad. I haven't seen him at Porto so I can't really judge him on that but from what I've seen in the NT in the world cup and the friendlies before as well as our stinker of a year in 2013 he was a bright spot in the NT

That's true, some players just excel for their country in a World Cup environment or even in general when they pull on the National team shirt, but they can't turn it on week in and week out at club level.

Ed might have gotten the wrong Herrera. Well, he might be the right Herrera, though he will cost a LOT.

Doesn't Mexican Herrera play for Porto? He'd hardly be that cheap, would he?

Rio most likely doesn't know he plays for Porto.

Porto and cheap sales don't mix.

He didn't have a good season.

Porto in general didn't have a good season. Hard for a guy who is making his debut in a European league. Plus I doubt Porto would sell him on the cheap with him having a good World Cup.

Unless a crazy offer shows up, Porto usually plans it's movements well ahead, and it's definitely not part of the plan to sell Herrera this year. Unfortunately no one joins the club without the expectation to move to a bigger league in the mid-term, so players expectations have to be taken into account, and the ones expecting to leave this year (from the first team at least) are Fernando and Jackson Martínez. Possibly Mangala as well, but he doesn't seem to be in as much a rush as the other two.

We've yet to see Herrera in a functioning team. In a non-functioning one, he was one of the worst, but he came very highly credited from Mexico (look for @MUFC07 posts) and looking at how motivated he is now in the World Cup we're probably more keen in watching his value rise here than cut our losses in a precipitated fashion.

New manager (not very happy with the choice, personally), new team-mates, I'm very curious about what he can do.

Looks like a completely different player in this World Cup. He was awfull last year in Portugal but he should have the benefit of the doubt since Porto´s campaign was pretty bad with wrong managerial appointments and respective tactical chaos. Amazing how he looked completely out of depth in the Champions League and now is playing like a top class player in the World Cup. Doubt Lopetegui will let him go without giving him a chance.

Anders and Hector as CMs for us.

Herrera.

Herrera.

Back to Herrera.

Herrera with a surging run forward, Herrera peeling off him left.

Hererra plays a lovely 1-2 with Herrera

He skips past the keeper and puts it in the back of the net.

Great goal by Herrera.

Herrera, Herrera, Zaha, Kagawa, Mata

Just need to sign Jimmy Kebe to play with Bebe and we are good (well, shit).

He had an impressive game vs Croatia sure. Best player on a pitch that also contained Rakitic and Modric.

LOL because they're both named Herrera!!!!

Wow, sign a player because of two good games and disregard club form! The world cup is a bad influence...

Spot on. I was pleased we never moved for Hector Herrera in the first place. There's a lot of Mexican footie on TV over here in the States and I saw him play a few times. He never overly impressed me. Been crap for Porto too.

I read the Herrera story really early this morning and thought we'd spent £30m on this guy. Nearly had a fit. Though tbf he looks half decent.

He'd be a great signing but you get the impression that LVG has eyes for Strootman and will wait until January to get him

He's been shite for Porto, one of most who have but either way, don't think he's ready for a move to an even bigger club yet.

Worth a punt if we can get him on the cheap. Then again, he could do a Kleberson, for all we know...

He also had very good matches for Porto, specially towards the end of the season. I don't know why the Porto fans in here don't say that.
He should definitely prove himself at Porto before looking for a transfer, but to call him a shit player is a bit too much.

LVG will get a good look at him in the round of 16. Also, chicharito might need to be at his best if he is given minutes.

Rio always likes to play it cute doesn't he? I'm happy he's being shipped off. He's obviously referring to the money we're paying for Herrera. He obviously doesn't think highly of him. If he dissents in the dressing room, no amount of his experience is worth it. He can feck right off with his cheeky twitter shite.

Think you are reading too much into that one..

He tweeted it during the Mexico Croatia game when the Mexican was arguably the best player on the pitch, a day before the Ander Herrera rumours came out.
