Apu was one of the few characters on the show who was portrayed positively. Yet we have people like you moaning because you don’t like his accent. I don’t see any Scottish people moaning about Willy. I don’t see rednecks moaning about Cletus.

This is what people have a problem with, this need to be outraged about everything. Nobody needs to 'justify' Apu's existence, he's a funny stereotype in a cartoon, just like groundskeeper Willie, just like the Italian characters.

A minority of people have chosen to be offended by it and this somehow means everybody has to toe the line.
 
Just looking at the reaction in this thread, they were to get rid of the character. Anything that annoys these fecking tools should be considered human progress.

It's just another example of people looking at it superficially. Which is why I used the word ignorance. Just go and watch the documentary (hell of a lot less effort than me telling you canvass opinion) and then come back and make your arguement, or don't. At least then I won't be able to call you ignorant...

Won't make any difference.

By trying to repress comedy and tell people what they can and can't laugh at, people will naturally just turn to other mediums (especially kids, who will want to rebel and be edgy). Dark humour isn't going to go away because you got rid of a character on the Simpsons.

Telling people 'Look, you can laugh at Italians, you can laugh at Scots, you can laugh at drunks, rich people, people from the deep south ... but do not under any circumstances laugh at the Indian dude' is not going to work.
 
Also the like/dislike ratio on that documentary trailer is hilarious.

I'm honestly not that arsed about it. I don't even watch the show anymore, haven't for years. I just think it sets a dangerous precedent when you're cherry picking which characters are offensive based on how vocal a minority is. I also would be very surprised if in the next ten years we don't see shows like family guy forced to remove characters, tone it down etc.

I will actually watch the documentary, I'm quite interested to see how he justifies taking such a big stance over a minor character in a cartoon. I got the general jist of his argument from the trailer (and wasn't exactly convinced) but I'm sure he'll go more in depth. That said, I'm not exactly sure where I can watch it from the U.K.

As far as I'm aware he wasn't doing it to just take a swipe at the show itself - he admits he's a big, longtime fan and that he thinks Apu's generally a decent, well-developed character, but by the same token he feels like there are certain elements of his character that are fairly problematic, and that's something he wants to explore further. I don't see anything wrong with that at all. Critiques of media and of various TV shows are all over the place, and unlike him plenty try to gain a platform by just slating or tearing apart a show for the sake of it.

As bad as capitalism is, it always follows the money. So with the combination of a global audience, minorities, white people who also agree or simply don't care enough to actively do anything against it, the ''SJW'' are going to win and they are going shape the way television, movies, video games and any other way we consume culture. And good because we had decades and decades of the other stuff(And its all there recorded, it's not like people are burning it).

I mean...the point of that entire routine is that Basil comes across as being incredibly embarrassing and offensive, with the humour being that the viewer knows that while he's completely oblivious. It's clearly a different case to someone mockingly using Apu's accent.

Much as Willie draws on a lot of caricatures as a character, there's probably a different background with Apu insofar as Asian people have historically been treated a lot worse in America than Scots have been.

Not the show itself perhaps, but I reckon he knew doing such a thing would create a fairly big furore. Even if he’s just playing to the anti-PC crowd who he knows will lap this sort of stuff up, he’s projecting to a far larger audience than he otherwise would.

I dunno, if that’s how he feels then I don’t have the right to tell him he’s wrong, and he’s entitled to his opinion and his film. I’m just saying I don’t think everyone else should have to stop because of the opinions of one person and a few mates he’s got to appear in it.

I'm an Irishman living in the US. I have had on multiple occasions people imitate my accent to my face and don't get me started on the drinking stereotype. Now if I was of Indian or Asian descent and they imitated my accent and asked me about curry society would see it as a problem.
I have found no malice in it personally but it wears thin after a while. There is always a fecking idiot who doesn't know when to give it up or someone who will stoop lower and talk shit more aggressively. Hurt feelings and pearl clutching shouldn't be reason to continually pidgeon hole society and if that is the direction some wish to go then I want to say that stupidity offends me to the point off depression. I demand that all people I deem stupid for their opinions should be castigated and removed, that includes right wingers, far left wankers, cultural appropriation police that couldn't point out Korea on a map and Liverpool supporters.

You're missing the point. The guy isn't arguing against stereotypes. He's arguing against racism. He's pointing out why that character is racist and advocating changing the character so that it isn't. You can agree or disagree with him on that fact, that's up to you.

I didn't feel that invested or look into it fully when I first commented about it in this thread. I just thought to myself, 'Who cares if they want to change it?'. Bigger things to get outraged over.

IMO the "politically correct"* course of action for any minority is to accept a low level racism and stereotyping. Because any attempt to wipe that out is met with a disproportionate political backlash. The relatively less drastic loss of power among the majority is perceived as a genuine and massive loss, probably because it is coupled with the actual loss of privilege (like the legal outlawing of gross discrimination). There is not point riling up the majority for this.

Indeed. He's entirely incorrect that SJWs are winning anyway, sure they might get low level victories like having a character removed but the backlash is always disproportionate to that. People have also flocked to other mediums which aren't mainstream, where content creators can express views without fear of being silenced. Look at how disliked this guys documentary trailer was, that's a pretty clear view on how not on board mainstream opinion is with issues like this.

Pretty much the entire Western world has rallied hard against political correctness, it's roundly despised and the hatred against it has been utilised well in a number of political campaigns.
