Harry Maguire | Signed

We have 5 senior CBs in the squad + Tuanzebe if the club decides to keep him. Unless we sell at least one, I don't see us splashing £70/80 million on this area as we lack players on the RW and in CM.

I will never understand why we extended the contracts of Rojo and Jones, for example. Don't see any club being interested in them, considering the wages they are on and the transfer fees we would expect for them.

There's no way there's 15 better centre backs than Smalling.
This criminal underrating of our players does get silly.

Well City have a couple, Liverpool have a couple, Spurs have three and Chelsea have a couple. That's nine for starters. Harry makes ten, and I'm more than open to discuss if Ake, Diop are better than what we got. Ok not 15 but it was a figurative number anyway....

The transfer cost matters because the club only has so much money, and anything we spend on a player necessarily means there is less to spend on another player.

It’s an opportunity cost basically.

....but do we know what 'so much money' is? It's not like doing the big shop at Tesco, Ed's not saying 100m and not a penny more. If fact didn't he say previously there is no limit if the right player comes along?

Harder to compare players at lesser clubs who are under less pressure to perform. Plus their errors aren’t overly hyped like Smallings are, I mean the guy gives away penalties all the time if you read the Caf. He's an excellent defender, who is limited on the ball and requires a leader alongside him.
I'd argue Sanchez from Spuds isn't a better player, it's very debatable. Plus I'm not aware of the couple of Chelsea defenders who are better than him?
With the right partner Smalling is fine, as shown when Blind partnered him.

Van Dijk, laporte, Koscielny (if fit), Ake, Bamba, tarkowski, Duffy, Dunk, Anzpilicueta, Luiz, Sahko, Coady, Maguire, Diop, Rice (if playing there), Keane, Zouma, Gomez, Matip, Lascelles, Alderwerield, Sanchez, Vertongon for a start

At what point are fans going to accept that this is gonna be the norm from now on? It's like it's the first time anyone has heard one of these daft fees.

VVD wasn't the best defender in the World when Liverpool signed him, he was a Southampton centre half playing for a side sitting 17th in the Premier League, and he cost 75 fecking million. Felix is a kid, and he's going for 120m. John Stones can't defend and cost 55m. Coutinho went for over €142m. Lukaku was wanted by both Chelsea AND United at an "insane" price. Higuain joined Juve for 90 million. Chelsea paid £60m for a Real Madrid substitute.

As I've mentioned earlier in the thread @ZolaWasMagic, people compare it to the VVD price, but they forget that VVD was playing for a shitter side than Maguire and cost that much. Just because VVD is now considered one of, if not the best in the World right now, he wasn't then. And his price now? Add a cool £100,000,000 on to that price minimum if you want Liverpool to sell.

If you want one of Southampton, Leicester's or Crystal Palace's best players, you're gonna have to spend big, whether that's Maguire, Vardy, AWB or VVD doesn't matter. These clubs are rich now and have no reason to sell any "cheaper".

Clearly fine and therefore why does everyone think we need another CB? Also if Blind was that good along side Smalling, why did we sell him? Don't buy (excuse the pun) this thing about lesser clubs either. The pressure to perform is relative to their respective club and the expectations of that footballer to the fans. Sorry you must be in the minority if you think Smalling is an excellent defender.....

He was clearly better than Maguire is now. Had all the abilities to perform at the highest level and in all systems. It is not like he came to Liverpool and went from being a mediocre PL defender to becoming arguably the best CB in the world.

Whilst I agree, that isn't the point was it? VVD was player in a side sitting 17th in the league and he cost 75m quid, that's simply the price you will have to pay these days to take a top player from another Premier League side.

As for "had all the abilities to perform at the highest level and in all systems", well that's just not something anyone could be certain of until Liverpool bought him, hence why Liverpool had a free run at him. Barca, Real, Bayern, Juve would all love VVD now, back then, not one of them was interested.

I'm coming around to this potential signing now. Partially due to the lack of being linked with anyone else other than De Ligt (some time ago). I mean, I've never seen a top defender in Maguire so the fees quoted have always seemed absurd. Ideally we'd be bagging someone whose set to be among the best 2-4 CBs for years to come. But with nobody else in sight, fark it, I'll take what we can get. At least Maguire is supposed to very good on the ball. That should be a refreshing change.

Except everyone doesn't necessarily believe Maguire is a top player. So the rationale you responded to isn't really flawed even if it contains a view you may disagree with.

Leicester agree, and the fact that big club's are trying to buy him rather than say West Ham shows that they agree, that's the point and the only thing that is important here.
Whether or not RAB or amolbhatia from the internet agree has absolutely nothing to do with it.

As I stated earlier up this page:

People need to stop being shocked at these quoted prices and screaming how said player is "never worth that", they are the new norm if United, Liverpool, City, Chelsea want to take a player from a "lesser" Premier League side.

Except the fact that defenders usually cost much lower than attackers. You can’t compare the price of forward/midfielder with defender, they are never same in any market in the past. When we break the record to sign Ferdinand for 30m, Zidane cost over 50m in same period. When Liverpool break their record to sign VVD for 75m, Neymar cost over 200m in similar period.

We fell short of money for other crucial positions.

Getting a ball playing centre back is top 3 most priority alongside with getting new midfielder. In fact, it should be more priority/crucial than getting a right back.

With right back at least we have Dalot & Laird. They are still young but they have talent to be top right back.

With centre back we have the likes of Bailly, Smalling, Jones, Rojo & Lindelof. We can’t keep afford having a centre back who can’t pass the ball to break the line or can’t bring the ball forward.

This is why player like Pogba has to drop deep to get the ball and has to do everything.

Simple answer: no one better than them would actually sign for us

If we are going to pay that much for a defender. Why not Koulibaly who is better?

It would be sad if we end up with Maguire while Juventus sign De Ligt for the same amount of money or even less.

If any side can get Koulibaly for the same price as Maguire or a little more, you can be sure they will.

It's a daft comparison this as Ajax are a bit special when it comes to selling their players, they could start a bidding war for De Ligt and get 100m for him, but they don't want to price him out of having every option possible available to him.

He's 28. Last Chance for a last big contract for him. If he wants out and a team bid big i don't think Napoli can stop him from leaving by increasing the price.

If anything your centrebacks should be rated lower. There is a reason mourinho kept wanting to upgrade central defence every summer. At the end of the day, you are relying on centrebacks who were 4th and 5th choice for you when you were good and neither are really any better now than they were back then.

Smalling reminds me a bit of Skrtel in the sense that he looked good when playing with better players than himself, had six months once upon a time where he was really good, but when the time came to step it up as one of the leaders in the first team, the ability for it just wasn't there.

Smalling has all the physical attributes of a good defender, but he's not tight enough on his man and just a bit sloppy too often. He gets rated higher than he should be because he was really good for six months once, doesn't make the kind of calamity errors someone like Lovren does and is somehow still your best defender.

He's part of the problem for you though, not the solution.
