Which ones?
De Ligt had an offer and chose Juventus.
We aren't signing rival players, so VvD and Laporte is pointless to argue about.
We don't need old defenders, so Ramos, Bonucci & Chiellini are out of the question.
Varane & Koulibaly (and Gimenez with his 120m euro release clause) will not go for 60 million or less. Hell, they won't go for 80 million either.
You can't sign players PSG don't want to get rid of, unless their contract is out, that rules out Marquinhos (as he has 3 years left on his contract).
We don't need more sick-notes, so Umtiti is not someone that should have been considered.
All in all that leaves Gimenez, who got his release clause increased from 65 million euros to 120 million euros in 2018.

Do you watch Ajax, Liverpool, City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Juventus and Atletico Madrid enough to actually pass judgement so easily on who is better and more suited to the club?

Could have got a different unproven player for a bit less and gamble on them succeeding - like we did with rojo bailly and lindelof. Only one worked out.

He's a good signing. 80m is probably too much. But i dont see any signings now that dont appear too much, thats the market. Arsenal just sold some unknown bag of shit to derby for 10m and bournemouth sold mings to villa for 26m. Tarkowski and Dunk are being weighed in at 50 to join Leicester. Thats the market price.

Yeah but he rated better than Maguire before the transfer.

That's the thing though - you can't account for how much a player will improve playing in better conditions etc. Maguire especially seems the type of character who would thrive with all the expectations around him.

Him not being as good as the best CB in World football is hardly a knock against him. Leicester were adamant on their valuation all summer and yet, despite having the opportunity to look elsewhere, we continued to push Maguire, which clearly shows there's something there that Ole and the team really value.

We overpaid for sure, but no fecking CB should be worth anywhere near that amount, but that's the market. As I said though, the price was hardly a surprise, yet we remained interested.

Think of a lot of it was to do with Mike Phelan.

I think Maguire doing so well for England is a nice indicator. Because England set up is a huge pressure cooker and he seemed to thrive.

This video of his England performances is great.

how anyone can look at that and be against this transfer is unreal - that is so far removed from the shit we’ve been served from our defenders for years.

Jones and Rojo probably understand they need to look for new clubs currently. Obviously both Lindelof and Smalling are ahead of them and they know it, while Axel is the one for the future.

No, sorry, missed the bit about “half the price.” Agree. I think some of those would be available for 60m though.

You also missed 'attainable'

Ramos, Varane, Marquinhos, Koulibaly, VVD, Gimenez, De Ligt, Laporte are not available.

According to Luckhurst, Smalling is already being offered to clubs because he can't pass beyond 5 yards without dislocating a hip. In other words, he doesn't fit our new style of play. Fine defender, though.

I must be missing something I just don't see the quality in him most people do I guess. I don't really get the comparatives with VVD, big difference in quality between the two imo. I think United were bidding against themselves really, I don't think anybody was willing to pay that fee for Maguire. But good on Leicester, like winning the lottery.

it's a tough one. I trust Smalling a lot more than Jones and Rojo, but I understand his lack of ball-playing skills is a problem and that's probably why he hasn't featured that much in preseason too. There'll be a much bigger market for him too I'd expect ... he's a good defender after all. Still wish we'd sell Jones and Rojo over him.

Good player and will improve our team so now we just have to ship out Bailly, Rojo and Darmian.
So if the price is 85mil including add ons we are paying about 20mil more for McGuire than Juve paid for De Ligt which just highlights to me that clubs up the ante of their player when we are interested.
I suppose it is like selling your home; You are happy there and you do not want to sell but if someone offers you a silly price that is a lot more than the market value than you are mad not to cash in and sell.

VVD is 20 months older for a start. VVD has clearly improved a lot, but he wasn’t this good when he moved to Liverpool for £75m 18 months ago. A player can join a big club and step up a level or two - perhaps the same will happen with Maguire. In very basic terms he immediately becomes Uniteds best CB and improves the team.

Bidding against ourselves? You have to bid an amount that the selling club are willing to accept. Man City bid £70m, so how can you say we bid against ourselves? Leicester did not under any circumstances want to sell Maguire, so they set a high fee (£90m apparently) and negotiations have resulted in them accepting £80m. £70m was the opening bid set by City so we had to go above that.

It’s not really winning the lottery when Leicester now have 6 days to sign a replacement. Whoever Leicester approach now know they have £80m to spend. I bet the Maguire replacement will cost £40-50m so a large chunk of the money is straight back out.

Similarly we always seem to buy at the top of the market.
I read that he went to Leicester for £17m? Why weren’t we in for him then?

All that said, it’s done now so the silly money we paid for him will look fine if he turns out to be a VVD type for us.

Strange if so, he is much better than Jones or Rojo.

But he can’t pass. So nice to see Ole sticking to his philosophy.

I agree Smalling is better than them as a defender. But him taking a minute to control a ball doesn’t help us in a build up.

He is probably easier to sell than those two, and there isn't much time to find suitors.
On the plus side, if it's true, I believe we'll keep Tuanzebe around.

I think everyone-ish by this point thinks Rojo should go first, with Jones and Bailly as the sicknotes being next. Unfortunately they need someone to want them and to pay them enough for them to want to do a transfer before we can get rid.

Random question still related to Maguire..

Why do United sometimes announce a fee agreed (eg Daniel James) but sometimes just wait until it’s completely done to announce anything? (Eg Wan Bissaka)

Hope he continues to drive the ball up the field. Wonder how that will impact Pogba's play when he runs into his space.

Well hopefully Daniel James will the start of our buying players who in a few years will look like real bargains.

he can't pass worth a dam and he likely brings the best value of the remaining CB group. I would like to keep him over Jones, Rojo, Bailly as well for rotation but if he wants to be a guaranteed starter it makes sense.

no, deal close is fee agreed, medical passed just finalising the fine details, you haven't come close to our valuation so the deal is miles away

he liked something then apologised saying he fat thumbed it or something
How close is close really?
