This situation isn't completely comparable to Van Dijk. Van Dijk's been highly rated for a long time and has always had the physical attributes to be as dominant as he is.
That's not to say this is a bad transfer, Maguire is missing pace and agility in comparison to Van Dijk but arguably is equal on the ball, in the air and in his reading of the game.

I'm not sure that he played all 3 of those games, but I remember him absolutely bossing it at the time. He was passing it out from the back and bringing it into midfield like it was nothing. I was blown away by him. When he joined Leicester I strongly felt that he was above a 'stepping stone' move like that. And he was.
I honestly believe that he is a shade below world class, and he can become that here. Second to VVD in the Premier league. No one else is better. This signing does have the potential to single handedly transform us. I also think he's captain material.

None of these players aside from maybe Ramos would have been half the price of Maguire.

Adaptibility I'd say. He is use to the culture and the lifestyle, and the league. Should count for something, even if it's not much.
Always used to hear the story when teams buy foreign players of needing to "adapt" or adjust to the new life in a new city, new language also. No need for Maguire to go through all that.

You have every right to be giddy, you got your man and price don’t really matter. Still, I remember I also got ridiculed when I said Lukaku was going to be a bust. It’s only normal you’re happy after such a signing, and I do think it’s a good transfer albeit at an absurd price.
Fee's crazy, player is not a world class talent, there is still much work to do on our squad and playing style.

Strange list. From them:
- play for close rivals so not for sale to us: VVD , Laporte
- just joined other clubs: De Ligt
- injury prone as shite so not needed even for free: Umtiti
- over 45 years old (or thereabouts): Ramos, Chielinni, Bonucci, Gimenez
What do we have left? Right, only TWO players - Varane and Koulibaly. Each of them would have cost us MUCH more than Maguire (with Varane likely not attainable in principle)
Marquinhos plays as a DM since a while now, strange you mention him. Bonucci's current form - definitely not. Umtiti has barely played recently and seems to be out of favour at Barca.

That's what the market has come to. The issue was only viable option we had were Koulabaly who would have cost 100+m and Ruben Dias, who is a bit unproven and also would have 60+m. Right now we needed an experience CB who can improve defense straight away and Maguire fills that blank. I don't think he might have a VVD impact but never say never. One thing for sure he will improve our defense.

I think McGuire still has abit more development to go. No doubt the motivation playing for Manchester United, with better players and with better training and tactics is worth a few extra % points.
We saw the same in our defence over the years with the likes of Bruce, Parker, Stam, Vidic, Evra. Hoping he can join this calibre.
If he can make good connections with his passing circle, can take the lead in defensive organising and contribute aerially in defence, he dramatically improves the way we play.
There maybe better versions of himself but none were available or were too old.

But De Gea is neither vocal nor commanding, or inspirational for that matter. Shambolic choice.
I agree. I think he's worth it.
Don't know if its changed much now but when registering squads for the league or european competitions, you need a certain amount of howngrown players who have trained at the club for 3-5 years, including academy. This is to prevent rich clubs from signing a whole team of foreign imports while ignoring domestic talent, and is why City snap up the likes of Barry and Delph, and going all out for Sterling and Stones.
The whiners should stop their fecking complaining for once and a just be happy. He’ll be a rock for us and give the backline incredible stability.

Maguire is a great signing but Leicester got a fantastic deal here, £80M. though I think we will also be happy with it.
