Strange theory, how does the theory go as to the reason Leicester haven't announced the sale?

It feels like there's too much water under the bridge for this not to happen.

Both United and Leicester seem to be posturing over the dotting of the i's and crossing of the t's.

I don't believe the conspiracy theories. I reckon it's as simply as it looks. Just a matter of time.

"I was crap because I'm injured" is the oldest excuse in the book, so I never really bought it. Sorry.

Whatever dude. You bring up one particular game because he was absolutely terrible, then claim that it wasn't an outlier even though it is the one and only game that people constantly bring up when criticising him, and when informed that he blatantly should not have been picked by the manager because he had been injured the previous match you decide that doesn't fit in with your theory so you simply choose not to believe it. I won't waste my time anymore.

Okay, let's both just hope Smalling recovers from this toe injury that makes him a mediocre defender. I want him to be a world class defender as much as anyone.

"I don’t know but probably".

Hard hitting journalism there, Henry.

Not really journalism - he's answering a question from twitter. He hasn't exactly published an article with those words.

This deal needs to be done so that Ed "one line of inquiry at a time" Woodward can sign the midfielder United so desperately need too. Four new faces into this squad would shake some of them out of their juvenile lethargy somewhat.

I'd rather he say nothing.
Winter is not a bad journalist. If he says ‘I don’t know, but probably’ then I think the Maguire transfer is nowhere near closed yet (sorry to all the ITK’s), but still a possibility. The rest is just an opinion that he’d be a good signing.

League goals scored;
Fergies last season scored 86
Moyes came in, scored 64
LVG in, scored 62
LVG 2nd season scored 49
Jose in, season scored 54
Jose 2nd season scored 68
Jose 3rd season/ole took over scored 65 (if memory serves me right Oles team scored 4
Goals in a match for the first time since Fergie)

Contrasting styles. Defensive not for me
Fair enough. We were just massively open then last season and depended on the defensive style previously. My thinking was probably clouded by us creating loads of chances and wasting them in Mourinho's first season and being clinical enough in his second.

So he was just injured for fun? Injuries don't hamper performance? I'm sure next you'll be using Maguire outjumping an injured Smalling to level the match recently as something against Smalling.

Maguire. Who would you prefer?
Maguire but not for 80m. Mainly because we need to strengthen other positions this summer.

Maddison is not a priority, also there are better attacking midfielders than him.

I'm tempted with Ndidi if we can sign him at a reasonable price. If we can get Ndidi + a talented CB (Konate, Milenkovic, Upamecano) for 80m, that could be the best way to invest the 80m. Even Ndidi + Alderweireld sounds better for me than just Maguire.

Maguire is a good CB... but Alderweireld, Tierney and Ziyech for the same amount of money could be a better deal.

Would you prefer Maguire over Alderweireld + young talented CB?

For example: If we sign De Ligt for a world record, we could recover that money (even more), and reinvest in another CB in 5 years. IMO it could be difficult to sell Maguire in 5 years for more than 100m.

The problem with Maguire is not only the world record signing for a CB while De Ligt was cheaper. My concern is that there is no guarantee that Maguire will end up being world class like Van Dijk, so I prefer to take a risk with a young talented player (+Aldeweireld) than taking a risk with him.

I know is not my money, and I shouldn't care about it as some posters say. But I would think the same if we get Longstaff for 50m, Rice for 70m when there are better and cheaper alternatives.

Jones has an own goal in him almost to an extent of Wes Brown. Smalling has never scored so many own goals - whereas he actually did score some goals into the opposition net (although not many - on average 2-2.5 per season i guess)

Official Premier League Stats:

Phil Jones
Performances - 198
Own Goals - 2
Errors Leading to a Goal - 0

Chris Smalling
Performances - 219
Own Goals - 4
Errors Leading to a Goal - 3

.

We already have enough of a) "young talented players" and b) injury-prone CBs. It doesn't help us achieve results if you haven't noticed.

What we lack, however, is quality. Our current team is not good enough so we need transfers that improve our squad NOW. At the same time we are not linked with a single player who is old (which is excellent - any acqusition, even an expensive one, will have a resale value)

No transfer is a guarantee they are all risks, including the Van Dijk one. He wasn't as good as he is now when Liverpool signed him for £75m. People were laughing at the fee Liverpool paid but it's turned out to be a great deal for them in hindsight.

Could be sorting out a replacement themselves first to avoid getting fleeced?

How would that work though? Any selling club would surely know a massive Maguire is imminent, hence them suddenly after a centre back!!

Rojo 29 years old
Smalling 29 years old
Jones 27 years old.

Only Tuanzebe is the young talented CB we have at the moment. That's why Alderweireld + Konate sounds a better deal than just Maguire. I agree with you about transfers to improve our squad now. For that reason, I think that Alderweireld + Ndidi would be a better improvement than just Maguire (considering that we have to strenth other positions).

IMO a young CB like De Ligt, Upamecano, Konate, etc would have a better resale value than Maguire... But then again, I could be wrong. I hope Maguire ends up being world-class for us and we get more players so we don't rely on Matic and Lingard in the positions we need to strengthen.
