Was expecting replies like this

So if a bunch of us randoms on here can see what a joke Jones is, how any of us can be confident in Ole and the club for renewing him.

Most internet posters are utter shimmering apes in fairness who criminally underate their own players at bad times and do the opposite at good times.

We won't fail because we kept jones on as a squad player

I agree although I pride myself on having an opinion I stick with. There are some players at the club I think are average or terrible regardless of having a good game now and then. Jones is one for sure.

As for Maguire I liked him at Hull and think he is better than any of our CBs although not at the top level. Price quoted is huge but it wouldn't bother me if we spent 75m on him and partnered him with Lindelof.

We need a player like Maguire or Wan Bissaka to come in and improve their level. That's the golden ticket, and has barely happened at all in the last 6 or so years.
That's the pure lotto of football, who will improve and become that top player and who won't.

I'm always a bit concerned by the café getting all keen on a certain player, when they've probably only seen them ever play 2 or 3 times.
Everything at United is magnified, and you know for certain if some of our supposed average, or "Crap" players played for other teams, the same posters would be all over them

How do his stats for the season compare against the best centre backs from the top 6?

At this point id take him, though I maintain that hes only a minor upgrade over what we have (and not going to make the impact of a £60m+ player).

He's a good player. Very good in the air and on the ball. My main worry is his acceleration and tendency to back off. Would not be a good partner for Lindelof I feel as it would be quite a slow pairing.

I keep hearing this. Might be unpopular but I think Smalling is still (Quite rightly) our first choice CB. Maguire and Smalling would be quality in my opinion, both beasts in the air, Maguire is great on the ball and Smalling is rapid.

All quiet on Alderweireld - don't understand why we would go after Maguire for 3x the price, even if he's younger he's certainly not the better player.

He's made it clear to Tottenham he will play out his contract and leave on a free.

Exactly how much slower is maguire than these faster defenders. Do we have any stats to compare them.

After a very quick google, I can't find any stats on his pace, but he certainly looks slow. Saying that, I can't really remember too many times when his lack of pace has been exploited (I don't exactly watch Leicester regularly though).

He's a very good CB but is he worth £80m? I would say, no...

If we miss out on him due to Leicester's valuation, then we'll probably turn to tier 2 targets on Ole's list like possibly Tah, Milenkovic, Konate, Andersen etc.

I imagine the tier 2 players would be many fans first choice players to come in. Personally I'd go for either Tah or Milenkovic.

I really like Maguire, but if he costs 80m you have to say no.

If they want PL proven, why not go for someone like Nathan Ake? Surely cheaper, and also younger with upside and flexibility.

Whilst it would be funny to get a rumoured Jose target after the debarcle last summer, I think the ship has sailed on Maguire.
He's the kind of player we should've bought from Hull when they went down, not after his value sky rocketed when playing for Leicester.
That being said, Maguire and AWB would be great additions to our defence. They'd cost a load between them though.

I want maguire.

I do not want to pay a penny over 70m and even that deal would have to include bonuses etc.

Can the caf experts compile a list of alternatives, prices and assessment. Am I mental in being impressed by tarkowski when I've seen him?

Anyway surely we can have a ten person list of defenders that upgrade Smalling and fit our criteria

Alderweireld
Ruben Dias?

If we pay £80m for Maguire......my word it's not worth thinking about.

Ake isn't better than what we already have.

Smalling/Lindelof are better than most the people we get linked to, only really the upper end like De Ligt/Koulibaly is worth it IMO.

He had a pretty good season but Maguire is better. Burnley will also ask probably 50m + for him. All PL clubs are stacked with money with no reason to sell.

Orban and Upamecano - the RB pair also had a pretty good season and the best defence in BL. Both can be decent buys that would be much cheaper. Upamecano is closely followed by Arsenal as well.

Apart from that I'm not so sure about quality alternatives...

I had considered tarkowski as a 30m or so aim. But ya wouldn't go anywhere more than that

It seems like we want to sign a commanding CB and Maguire does fall into that category. I actually wouldn't be surprised if don't sign a CB at all if we can't agree a fee with Leicester.

People vastly underrate Maguire. Id imagine because he's a big, ugly English guy.

He's fantastic and improves us massively.

Maguire would be a good signing despite what the anti English brigade on here say. Lets get it done if its who Ole wants and not haggle over a few million.

How quick were Bruce and Pallister? I know different era etc. I'm just curious.

It's not anti English more like most people would be fine with a deal worth 60m and below. Some won't mind 70m and below

My opinion is that if we sign Maguire, Van Bissaka, a RW (Pepe) and Bruno, that would be a fairly good window no matter what the price for each of them is. If Maguire will be the solution to the problems in our defense, we shouldn't baulk at the price.

Agreed. He's exactly what United need on the pitch and in the locker room. People are vastly underrating the need for strong character guys on the team. Its shocking how mentally fragile United's squad has been over the last few years.

I havent seen any leadership qualities in him. How do you know what he's like in the dressing room? He's also slow. I believe Nathan Ake would be better value. He's also left footed and I think we need a left sided defender. We havent had one dice Daley left

We can probably buy two of those for the price it would take to buy one Maguire/De ligt.
Personally, i'd go for two centerbacks with the required attributes like playing from the back, having the physicality to deal with the aerial threats, mobility etc. Don't like and appreciate this Brexit strategy. Smalling and Lindelof are a good pair and with Maguire we are only incrementally improving upon them. Thoughts?

Nothing to do with that IMO. He's fairly slow and makes a lot of risky passes - it's fair people are a bit cautious over a huge price tag.

If he was 40m people would rightly snatch your hand off. At that price, MORE than VVD, he's got to be faultless.

I think there is a good chance that Leicester price Harry out of a move and I would not be surprised to see us leave CB until the next window if that happens. Simon Stone talked about the fact that United feel that their current options are as good as the 2nd tier options on the market and that is why they didn't sign anyone once it became apparent their primary targets were not available last summer. I assume Ed might well feel the same way again this year if de Ligt, Koulibaly and Maguire are unattainable.

If we don't add someone then I think Ole needs to figure out who is the best option to partner Lindelof int he current squad and focus on building that relationship. Lindelof looked more comfortable coming out with the ball than our other options and he also showed signs that he could grow into a leadership role at the back, he certainly was very vocal in the latter part of the season and seemed more visibly upset with our poor play than some who looked like they couldn't be arsed to put in a shift.

That mentality had us going into the season conceding 54 PL goals I'll be mightily shocked if they still have the same thinking after that

I get that thinking hurt us last year but fixing the right back position will help out at the back and maybe improving the midfield and our possession will alleviate the stress on the back line too. I think the principle is that we have a bunch of guys who are all at the same level so why buy someone who is the same. I personally think there are cheaper options who would still improve us and Others on here feel the same way, I am a big advocate for Ake for example but I am not sure Ed sees things the same way.

I hope we sign someone but if we don't then I want Ole to have a plan for how to get the best out of what he has and to know his best team. It just seemed like Jose was so mad about not getting anyone that he effectively gave up on the guys he did have to prove his point and we ended up looking completely lost at the back.
