Harry Maguire | Signed

I like Jones, always committed and tries hard, a lot of Injuries, but some great games, and even better facial expressions.
Hope he stays if he is not needed as often might stay injury-free for longer.

But I do think Maguire playing regularly will make us stronger, hope its one of the others that goes.

I understand your point but unless we improve drastically then players like those are very unlikely to join us. They will always have plenty of offers as CB is a problem area in general for top clubs at the moment.

I agree, which is why I wouldn't mind Maguire or a similar profile for the right price. It's when he becomes our marquee signing, that's when I start getting anxious.

Instead, I would rather we target other areas of improvement in the team for the right prices, and watch the market. As we improve, more and more players will be open to a move, including elite CBs.

He's injury prone and error prone. At age 26 and with 8 years experience with Manchester United, you'll expect some sort of maturity, leadership even in his game. Instead he plays like a 17 year old moron. There's a reason why United had spent 89m on CBs (Blind, Bailly, Rojo and Lindelof) since he joined us and look set to top that up with another 80m.
It's because Rio and Vidic retired

I'm generally positive towards Maguire, but the pictures keep coming back to me of that Depoitre goal at the beginning of Maguire's first season for Leicester. I don't have likes enough to embed a video, but look it up. If Maguire does something as slow and sloppy as that for us -this- September, or say against Chelsea, there will be no coming back from the meltdown people in this thread will have.

It's a shame he never realized his potential. I still think there's a quality player in there, being held back by black magic or something

Sometimes players with potential don't make it. They pick up injuries in a sensitive time for their development, they don't mature or their physical attributes let them down. However let us stop kidding ourselves that Jones is not a burden. The faster we acknowledge the magnitude of our rebuilding process the easier it gets to address those issues and return to our former best. Phil Jones is NOT a Manchester United level player

Too much of an investment for me. If we spend 70-80m signing a CB (doesn't matter how good he is), it's 70-80m less spent on attackers. RB was a clear gaping hole in the squad and we've fixed it with AWB, so lets move on and strengthen the attacking options we have.

It's clear that our RW options are non existent and LW with Martial / Rashford is a crapshoot in about 40-50% of the games. Maybe James will solve some of the problems but relying on a kid signed from the championship as first choice? Probably not a great idea. We haven't signed anyone that can take Herrera's role in midfield while Matic isn't getting any younger.

Signing a CB with so many more pressing concerns in the squad, for a huge transfer fee, seems like a huge mistake to me. I'd much rather just sign someone cheap to paper over the cracks when we inevitably have a defensive injury crisis this season and spend the summer trying to sign a good CM / RW.

Whhaaaattt! Just looked at the table, scandalous. 50 points from 34 games. Champions.
Mad mate. Just before I started getting into football but when I first read about I thought it was incredible and now I know why some people have called Capello a legend mate. What made it even madder was although they scored just over a goal a game in the League they smashed Barcelona 4-0 in the Eiropean Cup Final.

Worth bearing in mind that a win was only worth 2 points back then. They'd have had 69 points if wins were worth 3.

And only a 34 game season. So it'd work out at equivalent to around 77 points in a 38 game, 3-points-for-a-win season.

It would be nice to be able to win the league with 77 points now mate :)They did so well that season yet got knocked out of cup by Piacenza who finished 15th in the League. Crazy

I have seen everything in caf, I have seen Woodward fans and now I am seeing some calling Jones a good defender for Manchester United.

Good job there isn't any truth in these "Rumours", much better and affordable CBs out there plus we can address the midfield to with the 80m going some where near to getting 2 players in

Yeah there's nothing at all in this link is there :

We can't carry on conceding goals the way we did last year. We aren't in a position to paper over the cracks. We have some exciting attacking talent emerging and maybe Ole sees Greenwood playing a decent amount of games on the right as a way of getting him minutes? Along with playing Jesse there, he may even go with the 442 diamond more. We just don't know at this point.

There aren't a huge wealth of right sided attacking options available. We can take an extremely expensive punt on someone like Pepe, but in my book he would be a far bigger gamble than Maguire.

Solidifying ourselves defensively is a sensible thing to do and Maguire and AWB give us a massive boost there as well as making us more efficient transitioning from defence to attack.

AWB and a replacement for Matic would go a long way to sorting the defensive issues. De Gea not having a repeat of his career worst season would also help. The poor defensive record can not all be placed on the CB's(as much as we need to improve on them), we had decent records with the same guys in previous years, Utd were disgraceful as a team defensively last year.

Were you aware of the information below? I sure wasn't. The 36 goals is what had me going in the first place to be fair.

2 points for a win in those days.
Hardly scandalous!

They haven't announced any bench so impossible to tell if he's there or not. Sky reckon he is though.
he's there, there is a photo of him walking next to Andy King, unless you're signing him too
Looking for what exactly?
well they should be under constant review for a start but also there maybe something they could change in how he's trained or recovers from games that could keep him fit more often

Hadn't seen that but he's in the squad so it seems the reports/ITKs were false. Not that surprising but annoying as it seems we're in for another 3 weeks of "focusing on one deal at a time" while doing nothing to actually pursue that deal because we're too far apart in valuation.

We need to piss or get off the pot. Seriously need to move on to another cb target if we can't get this done soon. I can't imagine that our scouting list has 1 centre back on it. There must surely be fall-back options to Maguire that will improve our squad.

I have been on vacation and I have just seen this I cannot believe my eyes. 80m for Harry Maguire. The world has gone crazy

agreed considering it seems juventus have got de ligt for 67m and where paying 80m for someone way inferior and older .

Personally, I don't think Matic has been nearly as bad as gets made out. Part of the problem we've had with defence has been such an unsettled back line. Having 2 established defenders as first choice along with De Gea, giving them the games to build understanding and cohesion between each other and being comfortable receiving and playing the ball would be huge. I'm also not sure what midfielders instantly improve us, that would want to come and are attainable.

Would you rather the £80m stays in the Glazers' pockets and we're starting one of Jones/Smalling next season?

I don’t get this argument

1. De Ligt was not interested in joining us
2. De Ligt plays for a club in an inferior league
3. There might be some kind of gentleman’s agreement that he was to get his transfer this window
4. We are buying an English player with English tax
5. We are buying him from a club that finished not far behind us in the league

Stop comparing De Ligt with this transfer. The context is totally different.
