Must say, that as a Leicester City fan, this is very interesting reading :)

As if we are going to try Fosu Mensah at CB next season.

Maguire, Koulibaly or somebod of that quality is a must
It takes time to develop players, was Maguire or Koulibaly any better at the age of 21? Its in United DNA to play our best talents coming through the academy, and you can be certain, Fosu-Mensah and Tuanzebe would have been playing for us already if they where here when Solskjaer took over, just like McTominay.

If Axel is not ready to play for us after the season he had at Villa, he is never going to be ready. And what Fosu-Mensah did at Fulham does not matter, they signed Nordtveit and played him as a CB instead of developing our talent, I would never trust their judgment of Fosu-Mensah.

Think people are underrating him slightly, would put him close to Koulibaly in quality, the only issue is that neither Maguire or Lindelof are particularly quick so we can't play a high line :nervous:

Howson was correct. He had Stone on his channel recently.

I’d imagine we always knew de Ligt was a risky one so we’ve got a plan B, perfectly reasonable really. Not sure he’s the right guy for £75m though.

We could of got him for 70 mill last season, then offload, Darmian for 8 mill, Rojo for 10 mill, and Jones for between 10 and 15 mill, thats a total of £28 mill to £33 mill recouped, thus getting him for just under 40 mill.

Maguire would probably form a good partnership with Linderof, just look at Linderof's partnership in the Sweden national team.

Ed doesn't play poker, because the hand he played with Mourinho, is at a lost to the club, not only are we out of champions league, but we will get fleeced in the transfer market for quality additions this summer, we can only hope the clubs gravitaze will encourage players to come.

Our scouts should of been woking overtime over the last year to identify affordable targets, find a way to get deadwood of the books, even at a lost, before pre season, which is about three weeks from now.

Just look at Real, thats how you go about your business, get the important stuff out the way, and then everybody can relax, go on holiday, and tie up the smaller piece of business at your leisure.

Don’t see him and Lindelof as a partnership, he’ll replace Lindelof rather than play alongside him, unless we are going to defend very deep (like Sweden do).

Our transfer strategy always seems thrown together last minute. If wanted Maguire or Koulibaly then should be prepared to massively overpay, if not then should have already moved on to alternatives a long time ago.

Hmmm i wonder. Who would you pick from

————De Gea
wan bissaka-Harry—lindelof—shaw

Or

———Allison
Trent—-Gomes—VVD—Robertson

We should stop buying these average players for huge sums. 75 mill plus for a CB who had one? good year and a good WC is laughable. So is 50-60 mill for Bissaka. We should try to find players from other leagues who are ready to make the step up and who are not this expensive. I have no idea why we are thinking of spending upwards of 50 mill on a RB with one good season when we have so many other positions to sort out. Buy Meunière for 20 mill and see if Dalot and Liard can develop into top players.

Signing Wan Bissaka and Maguire will be a big upgrade on what we currently have and the fact they’re both proven/established in the Premier League is another big plus point, at their ages we’re looking at long term solutions as well.

If are able to pull off Maguire and Wan Bissaka within the next couple of weeks on top of James already then I’d be quietly confident we could pull off another 3 signings (defensive midfielder, central midfielder and a right forward please) before the end of the transfer window.

Another plus point is the fact it looks like we’re being proactive instead of dithering and “preparing bids” and Ole has at least some idea of his transfer policy and the types of player he wants in his squad so I’m looking at positives, for me Maguire whilst not being on the same level as De Ligt or Koulibaly would be a great signing.

Not the best option from the market, but still an upgrade. I would be more happy with Koulibaly or de Ligt.

70 million plus on maguire night be a severe case of misplaced priorities. He's ain't that great and we could just go in for Toby for 25 million and add experience to a relativity young defense of lindelof, shaw and AWB (potentially).

We could much rather use the 50 million saved to invest in a proper right sided winger or even a high quality playmaker.

Cause contrary to media reports , I really don't believe that we have huge wades of cash just waiting to be spent.

Actually sort of annoys me how mad the football world is now.

I feel like the Premier League is approaching a point where it's no longer economically feasible to sign a player already in the league - STAYING in the Premier league is worth £150million a season so why on earth would anyone sell you a player that might jeopardise that? I don't think you'll offload him to anyone for anything other than silly money.

And I personaly don't see him as anything other than a better than average-very good centre back that's getting wildly over hyped for some strange reason. Didn't he just have a fairly poor season for you guys pre-Brendan?

Didn't we spend ages chasing this guy last summer to no avail, same fee mentioned then as well, as was the fact he won't 'agitate' for a move.

I can see why we want to do, but if we're just chasing shadows again the forget it, he either wants come here of he doesn't.

I wanted him last summer. I guess the reason we didn't sign him last summer is the belief he'd be cheaper this year? That doesn't appear to have happened though.
Why do you guess that ? It's because we didn't want to pay for him last year. I'm sure we still don't.

He's going nowhere? The City speculation is just that, his agent I bet is putting it around, hoping that we bite, put in a silly offer of £90 million or so.

I'd rather leave it for that price, hes a top CB, but is he worth silly money for his age. Alderwiereld is a better option at a fair price, rather get 2 years out of him and look while he's here for another?

Leicester didn't want to sell, asked for a crazy fee and the player extended a few days after the window ended.

If we could get this and awb done at reasonable numbers, which is prob a combined 120m, then I do think our back line is a lot strong and quite young. Wouldn't leave much wiggle room for 2 midfielders and a wide player though.

The latter, unfortunately. It has no weaknesses. That Utd back five has issues with pace centrally and De Gea is limited with his distribution. Also, the attacking contribution from Trent and Robertson is far superior than what Shaw and AWB has produced.

I’m all for signing Maguire though. I think he’d have a Van Dijk-esque impact on our defense. I just hope the pace with him and Lindelöf won’t be a problem. Maybe De Gea can start passing to them when he has the ball instead of hoofing it forward.

Harry Maguire the premier sought after footballer for 75 million.
I hate football.

£75m+ is ridiculous.

Can’t believe we ignored VVD when he was on the move as we thought the fee was too high, yet here we are flirting with big head for the second summer in a row.

Let’s just buy Leicester’s scouting network. Pereira, Maguire, Maddison, Tielemans, Ndidi...all players who joined them recently for minimum fees who would start for United.

Share your thoughts on him please.

Harry is good for Leicester, he is refreshing for us and for a center half, composed if a little sluggish.
Is he better than what you or any other team’s center halves? no idea, different teams, different tactics, difficult to tell.
He is vocal, he is an organiser, sees danger and importantly portrays a calm.
Is he worth what we are asking? Is he ****, but NO player is worth the obscene figures now regarded as the norm.

That says a lot about our scouting network.

Well........what’s your take?
that he'd be your best defender by a distance should you get him, constant comments of him being slow yet I don't remember him getting done for pace too often.

Oh and the cherry on top, someone claiming to have watched us a lot coming to the conclusion that Maguire cannot pass and is useless with the ball at his feet!

Carry on this thread always makes me laugh...

His mind was already made up. I remember there was one other big club that was linked with him, right after Southampton cried foul and it looked like the move was about to collapse, but it was never really serious becasue his mind was already set on Liverpool. It was all about the fee, and whether they'd go to court.

Maguire is a good CB but we should not be fighting over him. I'd rather Skriniar at Inter. We need to make at least one statement signing and that should be de Ligt

I knew he had won some individual awards at his previous clubs but I didn't realise how many until now.

From 2012-2014 he was the Sheffield United player of the year three years in a row.
16/17 he was Hull's player of the year and player's player of the year.
17/18 he was Leicester's player of the year and player's player of the year.

Still frustrating that he was an obvious signing for us for for less than £20m two years ago.

Maguire is a good defender; this isn’t in doubt. I do agree, however, with the concern that he and Lindelof would be something of a wooden partnership. Positioning is always more important than pace at centre half, but for every Vidic you need a Rio, and vice versa. I can’t help but think Maguire coming in would serve Tuanzebe well, due to his recovering pace.

On the ball they’d be a great pairing, mind. Provided the midfield allows them to be, of course.

This, we could actually have been in for him when he left Shef Utd. I've said this before but played against us in the FA Youth Cup final when we had the team with Keane x2, Pogba, Morrison, Lingard etc. and was the only player from the opposition who looked on the same level.

Well hang on... we all thought £75m for van Dijk was crazy money for a defender. Van Dijk was highly regarded back then but 75m... nobody thought he was worth that.

Is the Maguire situation not similar? I dont think he's worth the price quoted, of course I dont. But could he have a VVD like impact on our shoddy defence? Yes, I think he could.

Umm, it is very much in doubt, no team with Maguire at Cb has ever been particularly defensively secure. That is not on him exclusively but when Hull, Leicester and England are all pretty rubbish defensively with Maguire a key figure the pattern starts to become worrisome. What isn't in doubt is that he is a good footballer and a threat in the air.

No. VVD was comfortably seen as a ridiculously complete defender, even since Celtic. It was palmed off because SPL, then at Southampton he began getting noticed. Then palmed off more because well, Liverpool target etc.

Maguire has mistakes in him and flaws in his game. Nothing like VVD.

there are reports or it was on Sunday Supplement that we did move for him in the final hours but it was too late and he’d agreed to move to pool. Says a lot about the running of the club that supposedly the exact thing happened with Bale. Moved in when it was too late.

The one that surprises me is why we didn’t go for Laporte who has been on the radar since Fergie days and there were strong links that was who LVG was going for.

Anyway still holding out hope that all this Maguire buisness is just a smoke screen and that we are actually looking elsewhere. I still have a candle burning, praying for a miracle that somehow, someway we get DeLigt.

VVD is a World Player of the year contender because ultimately he is an exceptional defender, not for all his pretty pings to the wings. Maguire has some very eye catching moments but there is very little in his game to suggest that he is a difference maker defensively against top teams. Some of his performances this year were dire defensively but because it is Leicester that is quickly forgotten after his next foray forward(that he labours back from) At Utd, or City, no-one will be ignoring his flaws.
