Harry Maguire (Out): Chelsea eyeing a shock swoop for Harry Maguire | Utd say not for sale

Imagine thinking we can go into the season with Martinez, Lindelof and Varane as our options.
A bit rash, but maybe that's what we need to move on. TBH, if Chelsea put in a good offer, we should give it a good think. What CBs would be available this late in the window? That would be a critical issue. More a stopgap than a true one for the future (as those are getting expensive). Then if we miraculously get CL footy next year, go all in for Fofana or similar.

Maguire is a decent CB but no one would deny that he's regressed. Since it's very unlikely we could ever find a club to sell him to except perhaps Newcastle or Villa, who can afford his wages, the best option might be to use him in the rotation behind Varane and Martinez or Lindelof. A month of two on the bench would do him wonders by taking the pressure off him and maybe, just maybe, when returns due to injury he'll come back refreshed and focused.

Come on Chelsea. Give us an irresistible offer. You're having only Thiago Silva playing at CB at this rate.

How wonderful would be to get rid of the immobile fridge. He is basically a laughing stock right now and a source of comedy.

Our worst captain ever. Please, please let's get rid of him.

Or we can just sell Maguire and sign any CB as backup from another club. Michael Keane, Evans would do as a stop gap, Pau Torres is still available also.
All far worse than Maguire. Not to mention we'd get rinsed for being desperate in yet another position.

I don’t think we should pay anymore then 20m for him. Anything else would be excessive.

They're really not. Maguire was good at one point, now he's mentally shot. If he were a horse you'd retire him. Whatever we got for Maguire we could drop on Torres and have an instant improvement, or use the money to get a better GK.

Chelsea should get them instead then if they are all so good.

Yeah him being not for sale is quite telling about our state, I’d really rather go into the season with 3 nominal CBs and reach to the youth if needed

He excelled at Hull and earned a move to Leicester, where he excelled and earned a move to Man Utd. He’s a regular for his national team which just had their best tournament run in decades. That’s everywhere except us, and it’s pretty strong!

Im more making the point that players get worse at Utd at the moment. When was the last time a player moved here and looked a better player. Bruno? For a bit? Everyone else I can think of in recent years looks worse. We’re a tough place to be right now….don’t be surprised if Harry does better elsewhere, on the evidence of today he’d be pretty handy for Chelsea
Was he that fantastic at Leicester? He did enough to earn a move to us, clearly, but if there is one thing that we have demonstrated it is that our acumen is not necessarily there. We also bought AWB at this point. I don't think Leicester have especially missed Harry. He's done well to build his career up from Sheffield United, don't get me wrong - but I don't think the evidence was necessarily there for him to be a top player.

It could be that they all look worse, it could be that they're not good enough to start with and our scouting is misevaluating players. Then they come into the pressure cooker that is United and they fold because they haven't got the quality or personality. We only have Varane as a proven winner at the moment, and he's one season in.

Let's hope today's result make chelsea panic buy Maguire, anything over 60 million and we would stupid to turn down, this would be once in a life time opportunity to make good money back on a player that is showing signs of not getting out this underperforming rut for over a season now but are dumb club will block it if it were to happen

I’m not necessarily making an argument to keep him. Admittedly I’ve got a soft spot for him as I was an ST at Hull when he was there. Ultimately he gets a disproportionate amount of flak from fans and I think we’ll look back on this era when things are good again and think, well, not many players could have done themselves justice in this environment. Litmus test will be Casemiro….if he comes along and we have him looking like a donkey in 3 months then we’ll know we’re fecked

No, he gained a lot of hype based on shows like MOTD featuring his runs forward with the ball and his aerial threat, but his defensive work was much less impressive, don't think he has ever actually been part of a solid defensive season in his career.

Seems not at all
Leicester Goals conceded
17-18 with Maguire: 56
18-19 with Maguire: 48
19-20 without Maguire: 41

Their defence has actually improved with their 80M CB Sold

Are they technically considered runs? Did he run? He sauntered. Dawdled. Trudged up the pitch.

Nothing against you in particular but I'm so bored with the Maguire banter. Yes, he's been poor for a while but the monster pile on to keep humiliating him, with United fans also culpable in this, is so tedious, lazy and outright unnecessary. There was a time when we used to back our own and rally round but now we're out there making the atmosphere even more poisonous. Give him a break FFS.
Have to agree with this. I think Maguire is a classic English CB, the “No nonsense” approach suits him better, booting it long, sitting back and absorbing pressure. He’s being made to play an Ajax system of football, and it’s as alien to him as would be asking him to play keeper. I would never boo one of our own players. It’s one thing fans ranking our players and another thing entirely when United fans trot out some hyperbolic insults to justify their preferences.
I think a better man-manager would have taken him out of the firing line sooner, maybe let the players vote on captain, any number of things to ease the pressure.
The away fans could sing his name louder than the rest. That would boost confidence. It’s not like Maguire wants to make mistakes or wants us to lose; this a past time for fans but it’s his actual career and life. Our fans are better, or at least they were.
I think it’s perfectly fine for the new manager to try and fit some players into his scheme who might not be getting it right away. Maguire is one of them. Everyone knows he can play in a more conservative team, and ETH wants something different. I would be happy for Maguire to go to Chelsea because he’ll play better there. Just like when any United player leaves, you wish them well (unless they are trash talking the club like Lukaku and Henderson). People make it so personal. It’s okay to say Maguire isn’t fitting this new system so he should be replaced, we don’t need the vicious attacks in him.

If anyone offers to take him and can persuade him to join, get rid and never look back. Maguire has been a massive, massive problem for the team, a problem whose solution is complicated by the captain and money issue (to bench the most expensive CB of all time who's also captain is simply politically more difficult).
If you can get rid, keep a poker face until he's gone and then start a massive cheer. Let him ruin Chelsea's team efforts, brilliant.

Yes, because we are rock solid at the back now with Maguire…

We have lots of CBs in the squad. If there is any chance to move Maguire, we should absolutely take it. He has showed nothing in the past 3 seasons (apart from brief spell under Ole) which would make him indispensable to our team.

It seems that his only strength is his injury record but it is a very small conciliation if you look at the number of brain farts he makes every second game. He is not a player which will allow us to play progressive football ETH wants and we need to start being ruthless with underperforming players.

We'd be fools not to sell him. There are so many quality alternatives available.

Yes. One of the biggest issues is how the whole defence is messy when he plays. He is the captain and is expected to dictate the defence, but he doesnt and in fact he is extremely reactive and doesnt read the play well, thus making the whole defence confused.
Together with De Gea he is a massive issue. And if we can get rid of him we absolutely should. Maguire out of the club would solve quite a few issues.

Who? And why aren't Chelsea chasing them instead?
I watched Chelsea's and City's defences get torn apart yesterday. Must be that Dias 'can't play in a high line'.

He's at best the fourth best centre back at this club. Get rid.

We need to buy him off Lazio first.

In terms of experience and ability Maguire is definitely worth keeping in our squad (and suddenly we seem to have gone from having too much depth at CB to potentially very little...) but from a mentality perspective the guy is absolutely shot and I can't see him having the character to come back from it - they guy looks like he is constantly on the cusp of an anxiety attack these days when playing in a United shirt.

It's crazy thinking back to not much more than 2 years ago when our fans were desperate for him to be fit for the Europa League final (which we may have won with him in the team) - now he's just seen as a meme footballer who is spoken about as though he's one of the worst defenders the league has ever seen. The price tag and captaincy weigh too heavily on him, especially when you factor in Ronaldo and potentially others acting like little cnuts about it rather than focusing on team unity.

There's clearly a desperation from our fanbase to sell him, but if it's because he's a shit footballer that's not really fair or accurate - it's more because the chances of him having the mental to strength to perform every week in a United shirt with all the pressure on him is minimal. If he was willing to stick around and have a spell on the sidelines and lose the captaincy (which is meaningless to me, but it fuels the rabid online hatred of him) I would keep him as we need some decent quality depth in defence.

Not in a back 4. If we had to play either of them at CB, we'd be absolutely screwed.

We'd be as well as moving Maguire on if we can.

McTominay/Shaw might not be the answer at CB, but Maguire certainly isn't. I actually think it'd be best for Maguire too if he moved on. He looks done mentally.

He might ask for a move if the proposed switch happens against Liverpool and the defensive unit looks sturdier as a whole. I'd still caution against selling him at a cut price before trialing a 3 at the back system, where he looks most comfortable.
