Sounds like some people were trying to prevent his sister from being brought to a hospital. Probably because a toxicology report might have shown that she was drugged. Conspiracy theory? Maybe.

In theory yes but in practice no. Maguire won't threaten their families :)

God knows what happened but in my opinion the story forwarded by Maguire's defence stinks of the story of a badly written third rated movie from the 90s. You have poor Maguire's drinking at a tourist place, then the evil Albanian gang comes in and try to inject his sister with something, then Maguire and his few mates are able to punch their way to victory only for the typical 'Corrupt' South European police to step in and back stab the poor guy by kicking him in the leg and promising him that his career is over. Seriously you could put a young Steven Seagal to play Maguire's role and no one would notice that this is a real thing not a 90s movie

As said in multiple times I don't know what happens. However being a South European myself who lived in the UK for quite some time I wouldn't be surprised if

a- Maguire and his mates got drunk
b- they got into a fight (God knows whether its their fault or not)
c- the police stepped in and the locals being locals knew which buttons not to push so they could avoid being arrested. Considering how delicate British police tend to be with poor little drunkards then I won't be surprised if Maguire felt he was mishandled.
d- Maguire being tipsy and with zero idea of how police work down here said some silly things mostly based on stereotypical BS and that irritated them even further

I am not Greek. However if their police work in the same way the Maltese/Italian does then the least said the better. Honestly this attempt of embellishing this mess up with stories of police brutality will only serve in putting him into deeper shit. These police might not be the most professional people around but they do have their pride and they care for their job enough not to leave some big time Charlie getting them into trouble. So if I was Maguire, I would just pay the fine, go home and never come back.

Harold Maguire was a great player but a difficult personality
He clashed with the Greek authorities because Albanian gangsters shanked his sister
Tough personality? He still won plenty of quarter finals.

Poor Maguire was just enjoying a succulent Chinese meal, this is democracy manifest.

What would you say about the sister being stabbed then, you've bent everything his defence put out negatively and yet left out that part. Why is that I wonder

He's already home and his lawyer is there dealing with it for him, he's already pleaded not guilty.

I don't think Maguire will let this go without fighting it, and I don't blame him. Sounds like shoddy Police work to me!

Albanian gangsters.. Some people have no idea what Albanian or any south/central/east gangsters do if they think those would waste time on some wee scuffle with drunk Englishmen.

Thugs, criminals, thieves - Yes. Gangsters? On a fist fight in a public place, too. Sounds legit.

Surely you can't be done for alleged bribery whilst you're wasted. Wonder if he did the "Do you know who i am' lark

Called it, true or not he's going to have that used on him at training for a while

I suppose he'll get a criminal record even if he's let off with just a small fine? That'd be the most annoying aspect for our US tours.

If what the media saying about Maguire is true , which I highly doubtful because when do the media ever tell us the truth. ? Harry a right cnut coming out with the " don't you know who I am" I simply refuse to believe it

I traveled in Albania from north to south 7 or so years ago for 2 weeks despite warnings of it being very dangerous, gotta say it was the friendliest and most hospitable godfearing people I met during travels and nowhere did I see any gangsters and was instead greeted with open arms. At that time at least you could tell they had come out from dictatorship and were rapidly getting westernized and were very happy for tourists, some remnants of people had access to firearms from old days but that was cleaning out fast according to locals. The service and hospitality was top and since lot of the people I met worked in Italy or Greece during seasons in the tourist sector many spoke fluent Italian and the coffe was excellent everywhere but at that time at least low or no English spoken. Most of the dangers I saw was pretty much in the traffic that was VERY wild to say the least!

I think the stigma of gangsters sticks for some reason and get poor rep from a very small minority of organised criminals or former military operating during the power vacuum created after the fall of their dictatorship with arms dealing or various drugs and trafficing, they operate mostly internationally and feed into what clearly is some historic unfair stigma.

Greece is lovely but as anywhere abroad be warey of the police.

Mykonos isnt though. Neither are any of the islands that have this thing going on. Corfu is the same.

They don't have nice atmospheres at all. Just full of trash.

The scenery will be nice; nature always is, but the town is horrible.

Guys, I think what this thread needs right now is for more people to tell us their incredibly boring travel stories and for the person to make judgements about those countries based on incredibly small anecdotal evidence.

I just hope his Defence handles cross-examinations better than he managed himself recently.

Maybe I am part of the evil Albanian gang who tried to kidnap poor Daisy Maguire. Harry might have beaten me but my cousin Stelio Kontos (google it) work in the police and he messed Harry really badly.

Seriously mate, I have absolutely no idea what happened. All I said is that I find the story to be too far fetched to be believed. If I had to blame someone then I blame it on cultural difference ON BOTH SIDES. Which is why I believe that rich people who want to get hammered outside their country could and should afford a local guide to keep them from getting into trouble.
