People saying, dont worry when he isnt playing for us he will move in January to get games before the Euros.....naive

I thought SOuthgate has often been overly criticised and has got us far in tournaments and handles the plaeyrs very well. Same token I also got annoyed at the sides he has selected, obviosuly everyone has different opinions on players.....but now his selections and explanations in interviews are really pissing me off.

He obviously has his favourites and talks rubbish about selecting players. He always says "you have to be playing for your club, be mentally ready and carryin gyourself corectly off the field"....etc etc etc but says totally differnt things in terms of selecting his favourites "he has always performed well for us" "the most important thing is his performances we see in training" etc etc etc

We have seen it with the likes of Mount and Kalvin Phillips and we are seeing it again now with the likes of Henderson and Maguire.

It doesnt matter if Maguire plays here, he will still get selected by SOuthgate, makes no difference to January

This is what really pisses me off.

I totally get him selecting someone who might be going through a bad patch at club level but never letting England down.
But selecting someone who has barely kicked a ball for over a year is a different matter (eg maguire / Philips).

Sorry I ment to say he was absolute rubbish.
That’s more like it! Now if you could just post that 15-20 times in every thread, even ones in the general that have nothing to do with him or even football itself, then you’ll be welcomed back into the fold

I think the tendency to talk about ‘favorites’ in coaches selections is very much misleading how it’s often used. When coaches - whose whole carreers often can come and go with a throw of the dice - use a player more than popular opinion would suggest, or in contrast with the general principles they often refer to, it is never the kind of ‘favoritism’ we associate with a parent having favorite children, or a teacher having favorite pupils. Any coach at that level will sacrifice relationships as well as principles if they think it nevessary to achieve their goals/avvoid failure. What happens is that a coach may ‘favor‘ a player in the same way they may ‘favor’ a tactical tool like ‘an extra man in defence’ or ‘physicality in midfield’ or ‘left footed LCB’s’ or the like.

They have some general principles and some rules of practice they lead by, and they explain to the players and press whatever deemed necessary to maintain a consistent story, but if, say, Ferguson deemed Cantona effective enough in terms of success, he’d persist with him in spite of accusations of ‘special treatment’, ‘setting an example’, ‘undermining authority’ or mny other apparent unbreakable rules he operated by. It may not be fair, but it’s never in spite of wanting results, short or long term.

When Ten Hag sticks with Antony on RW, it almost seems like some people expect it’s in spite of results, in order to save face or to justify the expence, or ‘nepotism’, as if Ten Hag would jeopardize his success as a manager by ‘helping a brother out’ or something.

It’s quite obviously about an insistence of his own belief that United works better with Antony starting than it would with Sancho, Diallo or Pellistri, and well enough to stick with that solution ahead of selling him and buying, say, Moussa Diaby or sth instead.

One may disagree and think one knows better, sure, but talking about ‘favoritism’ is even more misleading and misunderstood than talking about ‘jobs for the boys’.

Quite the opposite, when Ferguson stuck with Ronaldo, it was not because Ronaldo was his favorite person or anything, like Van Nistelrooy self obsessedly seemed to think, it was that in spite of RVN, most of the press, and much of the fans, and teo/three consecutive ‘weak seasons’ while Ronaldo overdribbled and struggled with end product, Ferguson was stubbornly convinced that Ronaldo was a better path to success than persisting with Van Nistelrooy, talented as he was.

When a coach sticks with an unpopular choice, it’s never to please anyone, it’s quite the opposite, it’s because they really deem that choice as completely necessary to achieve basic goals.

I am very sure the same goes for Southgate. He has his principles, but when he looks at his options, he is so convinced England will function better with a match rusty Maguire than with a more popular choice, he’s going to take the heat, stress and humiliation of inventing some exceptiin or excuse to explain why he’s picked in spite of the apparent inconsistency.

Playing the full 90 mins will help his fitness at least.

Another 90 mins against Scotland please Gareth.

Marked his own teammate on Ukraine's goal which is what led to Ukraine having a clear shot on goal.
He didn't and every sports writer has either blamed Chilwell pushing up, leaving the left side exposed and Henderson for letting Zinchenko run free, but you could guarantee a certain cabal of agenda-driven United posters would still blame Maguire.

Maguire did alright against an awful Ukraine team. He had time on the ball when he had it and generally did okay with it, his standard International appearance. Still makes him nowhere near good enough for us but Gareth will no doubt appreciate him for it.

Yeah, it's hard to take anyone seriously if they come up with "Maguire was marking Guehi", it further reinforces the point that many don't watch game or even the video of the incident, they just go by what's trending on Twitter.

I feel like at this point Maguire might be the biggest meme in world football.

Exactly.

If you blame Maguire for that goal you've either only seen the screenshots on Twitter that show him next to Guehi when Ukraine scored or football's just not your sport because there's no way you can be that clueless. I've already seen 2 posters blaming him for it, though. Clowns.

Thanks for the tip I will get right on it.

Or just don't understand how football works at all.

Watch again. He tracks his man (their number 9) who makes a run across.

The issue on the goal was the midfield not tracking back and Chilwell.

Ah fair enough, I only watched the replay once from the front on angle and it looks like he charges towards Gurhee for no reason.

If that's further out, you can pass the man on and hold your ground. But there, he kind of has to go with him. Midfielders not tracking runners was a bigger problem. There were 3 Ukraine players arriving in that area and not one England player going with them.

Overall, it's easy to look to place blame. I thought Ukraine worked the goal nicely, isolated Chilwell on the overlap and got late runners into the box for the cut back. From an attacking point of view, it was a good goal.

The shit Harry getting for playing for England... I won't be surprised if he's jigsaws next victim.

I don’t blame maguire for the goal, he is fairness in a tough spot in terms of staying or going with his man. However it was still poor of him to somehow end up running into the defender. Had the hall picked out the striker he was in no position to stop him.

I too shall learn from your wisdom.

So because Maguire didn't pick up the guy making the run from midfield he's at fault for the goal? I swear people just look for reasons for him to be at fault. Maguire wasn't marking an England player. He was marking a Ukraine player who made a run across the 6. Zinchenko ran through midfield unmarked while the midfielders who should have picked him up were ball watching.

His reasoning for picking Maguire this time around made sense. He said that with Stones and Mings out, he wanted someone with experience. He already played one unproven player with Guehi at central defense. Had he picked another, say Cowill or Timori and didn't get a result, people would lose their sh*t. Mind you, leaving JWP out but still picking Henderson and Philips is criminal

Oviously every manager has certain players they believe in.

The part that is annoying me with SOuthgate and that is he keeps mentioning principles of what you have to do to fit the criteria of playing for England....yet constantly picking these other players that havent matched that criteria at all, sounding lke a media savvy politician.

I am actually not against him picking Maguire for England. He has done well for his coutnry and there simply havent been good enough centre backs to actually challenge him and Stones anyway, liek the goalkeeper situation, these are the only areas within the squad we are weak. There are centre backs coming through though.

I dont really get what you are answering in your response though? My main point was simply people expecting Magurie to leave to play in the Euros if he istn palying for United are naive as he wll still get selected even though this goes against what SOuthgate says players need to do to be playing for England, I don tthink you have answered or jsutified this or even addressed it in response?

I log back in after a near five month absence, here you are firing off the same arguments against as many posters as you can in this thread, and you had the audacity to say I have an agenda?! (The same agenda I suppose our manager has too now, right?).

You make a lot of valid points in general which I absolutely agree with, but honestly, check your responses in this thread alone. At this point, you’re either Maguire’s brother, his love child, or Harry himself.

Is Maguire at fault for the goal? Yes or no.
