Does he have something in his contract that he has to start? I wouldn't put it past us to do something that dumb.

Just take him out of the team or send him on loan if he's such an issue. Tired of the shit.

Still standby that there are players performing much worse than Maguire, but because of his price tag and captaincy he is being tagged as the worst of the worse.

I agree he needs captaincy removing but who replaces him as captain? Ronnie who wants to leave? the petulant underperforming Bruno,? the error prone Llama in goal ? Luke 'biscuit boy' Shaw? Sir Rashford? MCSAUCE? Varane possibly one option but he isnt even in the team and he has a poor injury record to boot....i dont see a single viable captain there.....

I watched the game back last night and the weakest 4 players by some way were Dalot, Shaw, Bruno and Rashford......with Sancho not too far behind.
I think AWB is poor but man he cant be any worse than Dalot was..
Your forgot to put DDG as one of the weakest links...

As for captain, don't have one. Feck it.

Just put it to a vote. There's nobody in the side who is a natural, stand-out candidate so let the team decide who their leader on the field is.

Retaining him as captain was a missed opportunity by ETH to reset the existing culture at the club.

Maguire unfortunately is not only not performing well enough to start and has not been for a long time but also is the figurehead as captain of what has been a disastrous and calamitous few years in terms of team performance.

All of Maguire’s focus should be on improving his own individual performances and being selected for the team based on that alone. I would have more respect for him if he stood down to do just that but i very much doubt that happens anytime soon.

It would also have brought unnecessary pressure/negative media attention to himself. As soon as he changes captain every single one of his media appearances would've been poisoned with questions about his decision to change captain.

Give the captaincy to Malacia. He doesn't mind giving out a bollocking

One thing I will say which is separate to the point about captaincy is that if I were going to replace one centre back in the line up at the moment, it would not be Maguire.

You're both deluded.

He's detrimal to our downfall.

Against Brentford he was crucial to our poor start.

Sure, DDG fumbled the goal, but it was only a matter of time before we conceded.

Why?
Because Harry had the ball and didn't know what do to with it 90% of the time.

That ball to Eriksen which led to their first chance was criminal.

His flapping of the arms and pointing where to pass is downright idiotic.

He instills fear in his teammates.
He makes us play with fear and zero confidence.

There is literally no one who can sensibly replace him though. It would have to be Rashford or Shaw (as there’s no way it could be Bruno presently) and that would go down like a lead balloon.

Unfortunately, he’s the least worst option and it would be a really poor step for him to try and step down currently, given the impossible position that would leave ETG in to appoint a replacement.

Why would you do such a thing?

TRUE.

I wanted to see if my initial judgement on the day was clouded by sheer frustration.....but when i watched it back it was worse. Watched for individuals and their lack of effort and intensity.... full backs are huge problems, as is Bruno.

ETH must be able to see this...

Potentially but if ETH responded to those questions from the media with a culture reset and a new beginning and wanting to select a captain based on what he believes he wants his captain to be (ideally performing well enough to play and well respected within the group - I suspect both are not being achieved) I suspect those questions would be put to bed pretty quickly.

I think the vast majority were surprised he was retained based on my conversations and observations on this forum?

I think ETH needs to bite the bullet and take the captaincy away from him for our sakes and Harry's.

This still shouldn't prevent the players from performing, but it would be one less excuse for their continued mediocrity.

That's a terrible, terrible idea. That's literally pouring gas on a fire, because what you're doing there is inviting more scrutiny on his decision - especially for an English international. You guys really lack any form of diplomacy.

The best thing to do is actually keep him as the club captain, but phase him out of the first team and match day captaincy. In the media talk him, keep up appearances. Make it sound like he's in the plans, but at the moment he just can't play for X, Y and Z. And then once he's phased out to a degree try and ship him out. The key is actually also be successful on the pitch during this time, so you're not once again inviting scrutiny on yourself.

@ dick dastardly

Deluded...hahaha,...that's the type of comment i'd expect from someone who doesnt understand the game....i bet you were one of those several posters blaming Maguire for a goal on matchday thread last season when he was sat on the bench.

The guy hasnt been great, he isnt a great leader but the critique of him on here and on fan channels is way over the top. Cant tell me if you take him out of the team all of a sudden players are gonna start trying again AND the team are gonna flourish?

Rid him of the captaincy, fine by me, give the captaincy to....... who?

Yes. Excatly that.

We play with 60 to 70% of possession.
Most of it is circulating between our CB's.

Remove squareheaded slab from the equation and you get more confidence on the ball, faster circulation of the ball and you get into the rhythm of the game faster.

Suddenly all our players don't shit themselves when defending because they know they have capable centerbacks behind them.

The mentality of team skyrockets and we start winning games.

Yes, it's that simple.

I wonder who is pushing the captaincy thing in the media? Which player (s) wants him out so bad? Who would have designs on this stupid captaincy?
Rashford? DDG? And again, not liking the captain is still no excuse for performing badly.

His signing highlights is every thing thats wrong with the club. Overing pay for an average player and rewarding him with the honour of captaining this club even though he has neither the ability or the wherewithal to lead or take responsibility. Remember this is a guy who had to come out and justify his role in the car crash interview last year.

Some of us were against this signing from the off. It's crazy the club didn't see his defiencies and that he didn't have the mentality to play for United. Don't we look at a player's total profile before bidding for them?

You're focusing too much on the captaincy issue.

I don't think they're highlighting that.

Says clearly that the players have doubt in his STARTING privileges.

And i concur.

No we dont. We have no decision making structure and no DoF worthy of the name. Its a joke and a shamble. Nothing has changed.

Arguing about whether he should be captain is like arguing which man is better suited to cheat with your wife.

Maguire is clearly not good enough. He shouldn’t be in the starting lineup never mind in a discussion to be captain.

Yeah I was in that boat aswell. Never wanted him in the first place (Fofana was the better choice even back then) but EW and Ole wanted their shiny toy. The most expensive defender in the World is a player who lacks the basic ability to…defend.

How many years left on his current contracts?
We shouldn't be offering him any new deal or activating any option on his current deal.

Yes, it's that simple.

Its really not, you could replace maguire with van dijk and we would still ship a load of chances and goal.

Let's have a look around mr maguire and see who he has to help him defend,

At RB diogo dalot an absolutely bang average RB who isn't very good at defending

His CB partner a 5ft 9 midget who dosent win any aerial duels, gets bullied by any half decent PL striker and dosent have a great deal of pace to help cover either. Good with the ball though.

GK the least commanding GK in the league who also dosent sweep behind and is pretty much useless at playing the ball and also dosent kick very long or accuratley meaning even as an emergency out ball is pretty useless.

DM, Eriksen/fred/mctom eriksen isn't a no6 doesent have the defensive instincts or positional play to be it. Fred gets bullied, goes missing loses the ball alarmingly regularly and regularly switches off. Mctom Agrresive and physical but questionable positional instincts and poor technique resulting in alot of turnovers.

So the immediate 4 players around him in the team are either unsuited to there role or frankly shite. And they have performed in such a manner so far aswell.

Maguire has been OK so far, not flawless but OK, but he can't cover for the huge flaws in the 4 players immediately around him.

When ETH say that he starts because he's the captain? I didn't know this was a thing for us.

Crazy decision. Sickens me how stupid the people running the club are.
If the fans could see that, how the hell did the club miss this about him? It's really depressing.

Statement FC.

Woodward: Lets make a statement by signing the most expensive defender in the World forget his ability lets just pay way over the odds so we can use that tag line.

He he was not ok. He is the main reason why our defence looks so poor. Most if time he is nowhere near danger zone, slow in reactions when he is and his passing (decision making) is awful. He makes whole defence worse.
Some people apply ridiculous standard for him; "Did he fecked up something? No. See, he looked good then"

How much could we sell him for, and to who?
25 - 30m would be huge success, but seriously this lad needs to go and that's upmost priority in this. He could do really well in a steady pace team.

Captaining ManUnited was also not his gig.

I get a lot hate Maguire but his two games haven't been bad this season. We can criticise him for not having pace but what's the point given he can't just run faster. He is what he is; have a go at those picking/captaining him. Hopefully EtH can have him performing like he did in Ole's last full season and how he does for England.

You called me deluded, yet you seemingly have all the answers.

you should ask the club for a job, if you can fathom how to turn things around so quickly.....when so many others fail.

The grand master plan from our latest internet manager, leave SQUAREHEADED SLAB in the hotel and we all of a sudden become a force..

What are you expecting him to do? Win the aerial duels for martinez? Cover the Rb spot for the often missing dalot, claim crosses and sweep for de gea to take pressure of himself? Go into the no 6 posistion and pass the ball to himself ensure he dosent get caught on it? All while doing his own defensive duties of course?

Some people are going at him about the 4th goal? After a combination of his CB partner his GK and his DM had gifted the opposition a 3 goal lead he gets caught very very high in an attempt to overload brentfords defences and In fairness if de gea who should of been quite high up the pitch himself considering where the CBs where and Shaw who gets beaten far to easily had done there jobs it wouldn't of even been a problem.

What i am expecting from 80 mil worth United defender and team captain? Are you joking? What are you expecting from main United striker? 30 goals per season, right? Same goes for Maguire. I expect from him to organise defence, anticipate danger, gives boost to other players. I expect from him to make a difference not just having a game where "he didn't anything wrong".
Also even that claim "he didn't do anyting wrong" is false because his passes are mental and he hugs the ball too much which puts pressure on defence.

Ffs, guy is playing like shit last 12 months and now when he finally managed to have a game without clear mistake, he is all of sudden ok and all is forgotten. Our standards for players are in deep shit

I will blame De Gea before the defenders.

No defender could defend properly in front of him, as proven by the Spanish national team.
