His passing is good, and he was very good defensively today. Seems to be getting his mojo back. Just needs Martinez back there now.

Excellent.

Yeah he missed a sitter but when your head has more edges than a thruppence it can be tricky.

Defensively he impressed. Dealt with a 1v1 situation, got an important touch to intercept a pass to Griezmann and made some decent passes out from the back.

Yet you get folks who just continue to berate the guy and say he’s shite. It’s tiring that some of these knuckle draggers can’t give a bit of positive feedback when it’s due.

My MOTM today,

Maguire, Fred and Martial are gonna be massive this season.

This will be a good thread today to see where the agenda posters lie. Maguire was excellent today and his only error was missing the attacking header. Passing was good on the whole, dealt with the press well and was very solid defensively. Will be good alongside Martinez I reckon.

When Lisandro joins the starting lineup, I would imagine EtH would instruct more of the playmaking from the back to come through him. It's painful watching Maguire think he's Beckenbauer, sure he hits a few of his passes but there's far too many attempts that end up out of play.

He was fine defensively today but I know he'll be exposed in the PL with the high line we play.

Not the biggest fan of this big lump, but he’s been pretty good in preseason. Considering he’s an £80m player who is going nowhere and most likely will be a starter, I hope he has a great season. I’m a Varane fanboy but he’s seemingly unlikely to string a run of games together.

Another very decent performance from Maguire and this time the opponent was quality.

Our Captain will have a great season , no doubt.

If he was called Maguini, people would be raving about his performance

He needs to stop thinking he's Pirlo and give the ball to the playmakers

We didn't have any 'playmakers' until Eriksen came on, did you wish him to hang onto the ball until then? Silly thing to mention when Fred & McTommy are in front of him, there's a reason why Ten Hag wants De Jong.

Played well, and can people lay off on the whinging about him scoring? How many do we seriously expect a CB to score, between 3-5 goals is good.

However his speed, most notably on the turn in a high line is a worry. There was a moment in the second half, where he actually ended up doing well, out on the right against Felix, ball behind him and he turned like a cruise ship, it is going to be a problem this season.

He will go back to second place season form.

Our striker changing to Ronaldo let go of too many counters for him to defend a high line with.

With possesion he will be fine.

We’ve already seen a good player at United. Everyone turning on him last season was annoying as feck. Hope he proves them all wrong this year.

Didn't see the game but I've always thought that he'd be pretty much first choice if he got his form/confidence back. More interested to see who will be our first choice pairing. I think I just want to see an end to the Maguire/Lindelof partnership and a different pairing.

He was decent today. I think he is a better defender than what he showed last season but man he is slow. The high line will be a problem for him and I hope he can cope.

He's still the slowest CB in the league.

With all the possession we're apparently aiming to have this season, that will cost us.

For a big lump his heading is still shit. That offensive header is criminal.

But the bigger problem is his defensive headers....he still can't control the pass.
Once it goes 5 yards in the stands and the next time it falls flat 3 feet away in our own box.

But i won't spoil all the praise with my doom and gloom.
Still wish he goes down the pecking order of our CB, there's more quality in Varane, Lindelof and Martinez.

Fred. He should give it to Fred.
Bruno. He should give it to Bruno.
Feck it Malacia. He should give it to Malacia.

He gives it away trying to sail balls over the defense. Lindelof is better at it than him. Give it to Lindelof.

Good game and confidence back. Thought he managed 1v1 well, which is normally his weakest part of the game.

Solid performance but I’d like to see him be more effective with his attacking headers.

Looks to have got his self together.
Based on?

My issue with Maguire isn’t actually his performances, we know who & what he is at this point it’s people that act like a few good games, following a few bad games make him the best/worst player on earth, & in fairness vice versa. He’s certainly been better in the past few friendlies, let’s see how he goes throughout a season before anointing him back ‘together’.

He's not actively like us starting with 10 men, after last season that will do for a starter

I really don't understand why he's in the majority of peoples preferred line ups for the game on Sunday and the upcoming season. Is it simply because it looks like Ten Hag is going to keep him in the side or because people actually think he's one of our strongest CB's? I don't how many chances people want to afford him but no way do I have him as one of my first choice CB's. He's behind Martinez, Varane, Lindelof and Bailly in terms of ability. The only CB I'd have him in front of is Phil Jones and that's only based on fitness.

Of course, I'm willing to be proven wrong and for him to become a good player under a new manager but I just can't see it.

Maguire when he's playing well is better than Lindelof, better than Varane has shown for us and better than Bailly has performed for more than a couple of matches in a row. Maguire's performances in the second half of 20/21 were easily the best any of our current defenders have ever played for us, and second only to Smalling in 15/16 in terms of any of our defenders since the days of Rio and Vidic.

Whether he can get back to that form is debatable, but with Varane's injury issues he is clearly first choice atm.

"Maguire when he's playing well". Which is almost never, that's the problem. We could say the same about anyone when they are "playing well". I just don't think he's going to play well often enough. He's consistently poor nowadays and I think you have overrated his performances in the second half of 20/21.

He was probably our best central defender during the preseason.

I've tended to be the one criticising Maguire to his fans, and pointing out how inconsistent he has been. But you are going too far the other way. If Maguire is playing well he is one of our top two centre backs, and as such he rightfully should get first shot at the starting role. His performances should then determine if he stays in that role or if he gets dropped.

Now that we have what will hopefully be a proper manager with a proper coaching set-up, the hope is we will have an actual playing style that does make it easier for our players. As bad as Maguire was on the individual level last season (and he was extremely bad in the first half of the season, so-so in the second half), the complete collapse of our team and the obvious lack of any proper coaching put an incredible amount of pressure on the defence.

I believe he will prove a lot of fans and pundits wrong this season. He is still a very good defender and can bring the ball forward when needed.

The move to the right-sided centre back position will help his passing game too, plus having Martinez also taking the burden off of him to always move the ball forwards is a bonus. Martinez is so composed in possession that it can breed confidence in the back line also.

The two of them will prove to be our best CB partnership for years.

Maguire is the one with the highest ceiling of our defenders. I am mostly worried he will end up in bad positions this season. We saw already last season how teams tried to pull him out to the side and isolate him 1v1 against quick dribblers.

Individual skills will always be important but in this case, I think the most important factor to get in to the starting xi will be how well the player can adapt to the strategy and play to ETH’s instructions. And that will be quite a change for Maguire, Varane and Lindelof

Big day for him today. Here is hoping he proves the haters wrong.

Extended interview with maguire coming up soon on Sky sports. I'll try to capture the salient points.

1. Retaining the captaincy was a good morale boost
2. Likes ETH's idea's, still a lot of work to be done but players enjoying it
3. Last year major setback for him and the team/club. Individually we didn't perform well enough
4. How do you deal with criticism? focus on bouncing back this season and improve individually
5. No preference on playing on the right or left side of defence
6. What is a good season? In the cups for a longer duration, improvement on performances
7. Ronaldo - goals.

There was a bit more but I tuned out.

Even though I don't think he's the captain we need, I hope he has a very good season and gets back to his best level. Probably starts with Lindelöf today, but I'm excited to see his partnership with Martinez.
