He was fine yesterday and excellent against Everton. I think he'll miss Martinez though so hopefully Shaw can return and play LCB to partner him.

Anyone saying he ‘wasn’t at fault’ for the second goal, please just watch his positioning as the cross came in. He didn’t attack the ball and wasn’t marking a player, which is why it struck him on the bonce and flew in. He was in no man’s land, blaming all around him. He’s a farce, and has proven this time and time again with meme inducing performances. He’s everything a Captain shouldn’t be.

Surely you are referring to Casemiro if anyone? Laughable post otherwise. Or had you just made your mind up before the game?

5:40 for the goal.

The Sevilla number 23 was right next to him what on earth are you talking about

You clearly don’t understand the difference between marking someone as a centre back, and standing next to someone. If you’re happy with watching that, no problem.

No, I meant Maguire. It’s pretty clear. He’s marking no one as usual. I’m reacting to what I saw, not a preconception. That’s not how I think.

Am I right In thinking he's gonna miss the Brighton fa cup semi game through suspension? So we could possibly have no varane, Martinez and Maguire for that game? ...

Maguire is watching two attackers as the cross comes over, neither of which win the ball, a third attacker outjumps Casemiro to win the header but it's Maguire's fault. Because obviously.

Getting Souness and Pogba vibes.

Look I clearly don’t rate or particularly like Maguire, he’s a reserve at United and will be gone in the summer, for good reason. ETH even bemoaned our lack of leadership on the pitch in the second half last night, and he did switch off as usual in defending the box. This isn’t a subjective view, it’s objective. He isn’t at fault for everything of course, but his ongoing performances at key times are poor overall.

Happy to keep reviewing how he goes, continuing Sunday, apart of course from the FA cup, when he’s suspended.

If he held a better defensive line like the rest of the defenders maybe these things would not happen as much.

He is always 2 yards further back than any defender, if he holds the line better there then that header just goes wide and even it the other player got on the end of the header, he would be offside.

He's suspended for the FA Cup semi final v Brighton. So hoping Shaw is fit to play alongside Lindelof at centre back? Talk about down to bare bones on options against a difficult opponent.

Look, no offence mate but what are you talking about? There are two Sevilla players almost right next to Maguire when the cross comes in.

Unless you can find me a centre back who is about nine feet tall, there's absolutely nothing he could be expected to do about that cross unless he just vacates those players in more dangerous areas to go chasing after En-Nesyri, who is already being marked.

The goal is just bad luck. There are plenty of reasonable criticisms that can be levied at Maguire without reaching this far to blame him for stuff.

"Holding the line" in that scenario is an infinitely more risky strategy there than marking your men in the centre because Casemiro is backpedalling to mark En-Nesyri.

The goal was a fluke. If you're blaming Maguire for it then I'm sorry but you are just finding things to criticise him for. There's no other way to put it.

He always drops about 5 yards too deep on crosses to make up for his lack of speed and recovering. Plays people onside for fun.

He’s actually been alright of late. Unlucky with the goal but yeah I think he should move on.

That about sums it up. Actually, he seems to have improved steadily game by game. He was really solid yesterday - good in his passing, calm and decisive in defensive duels, generally in the right place (except of course for that one time when he was totally in the wrong place, but he can't be blamed for that).

Still, can't have your captain sitting on the bench most of the time. Not good for him, not good for the team. Better for all concerned to move on.

The issue with Maguire is that him playing well means he only makes the odd mistake in a game. However even when that is the case and people praise him for a solid defensive performance, the reality is he doesn't have a football brain that allows him to play the ball forwards from the back to start attacks in a meaningful way. The modern centre half isn't necessarily a big lump who wins headers and puts his body on the line, central defenders need to be able to play football and start attacks with tempo. It's a similar situation with De Gea, as a shot stopper he is still a very good keeper but the modern game at the highest level demands that a goalkeeper is able to do much more than save shots.

Maguire would probably do well in Italy where Smalling has thrived, it's a slower tempo where old fashioned centre halves do alright.

That all being said though, Maguire has never been captain material and his arrogance in interviews and lack of self-awareness just makes fans dislike him more!

Lindelof Shaw then if no delay in Shaw return.

I agree that Maguire didn't mark anyone. However, it's not a fault or mistake. It's him covering a defensive zone: zonal defending. Where the header occur is not advantageous, and it was an athletic freak display to connect to the cross. It was unfortunate that it deflected off Maguire and went goal ward like that. Else that difficult header likely wouldn't end up a goal threat.

IMO it's a both freak incident and accident.

Unlucky, but he is unlucky too often. Making him club capitan made him a worse player.

No worries and no offence taken. You do appear steadfast and slightly blinkered in your categoric defence of Harry, against both what I and others have highlighted here, and I can’t agree that it’s just bad luck. It isn’t. In my opinion, which is the basis of a forum, he was yet again positioned incorrectly. It was no surprise to me when it happened. Maybe there is an element in the fact I have lost all confidence and patience in Maguire as a player first, and captain second.

Happy to agree to disagree though. Let’s see how he plays the rest of the season.

Absolutely cursed in a United shirt. He needs to leave for his own good.

hope he plays well enough to get us thru rest of season, and to get his value to best point possible. Then i hope the club is proactive and moves him and brings in someone who fits more how EtH wants his CBs to play. No shame in saying that maguire just doesnt fit that profile. A decent run in should get him to fetch a price that can not only pay for a replacement but also have some left over, assuming our scouting department is doing their job.

There were two players marking that Sevilla guy already. You could probably complain about the size of his head was at fault that made a deflected goal, but he's positionally correct.

He wasn’t, as usual he was two yards behind the line and out of position as has been mentioned. But it’s getting incredibly tedious making this point. So if you believe he was where he should be, no problem.

He was marking two Sevilla players. The cross came in behind him, how was he supposed to attack it? You are of course entitled to your opinion, but it really sounds like you just have it in for him.

In any case, ETH will analyze it and play Lindelof if it's as you said.

Good cameo from Maguire and was not to blame for the own goal. An average score of 4.4 on this forum is laughable.

The agenda is real. In his last 8 starts we have won all 8 games and only conceded 3 goals yet it will tough to find people who will give him a higher score than a 5

We've won the last 8 games that Harry has started and only allowed 3 goals, but don't let the facts distract you from your agenda

Why has he been relegated to reserve all season? And why did we go out and clearly buy two first choice starting centre backs in the first place?? The memory of some on here is simply staggering. Talk about agendas for sure.

Well we are stuck with him for the rest of the season now, so this thread will bear fruit one way or the other. I just hope we can continue this run of outstanding form with Harry leading the line. We need it.

Did I ever say that he should be our starting centre half when everyone is healthy? Varane and Martinez are clearly our top centre half pairing. All I pointed out is that with Maguire's starts since the world cup, we are 8-0-0 with only 3 goals against. But I get it...that doesn't suit your agenda.

Because he knows he doesn't have the pace to recover from a mistake so he drops deep about 5 yards as every cross comes on. No other united defender does it.
Since when does lack of pace have anything to do with a cross into the 18 yard box? I swear some people just look for reasons

Make or break time for him with United. Obviously isn't successful overall, but this is ultimately the key period in his career legacy and United legacy with how he'll be seen. If he steps up and plays well to close the season to cover the losses, maybe even plays a starting role where we win one of the 2 remaining trophies, I think his reputation will be recovered. Hope he can do it, as he's had a ridiculous amount of rotten luck aside from just not being that great.

Is that your take on tonight because it’s wrong. Apart from the own goal which was completely random, he didn’t put a foot wrong
The agenda is so obvious.
These guys must support another club i think or just have something against the English...just baffling.

He absolutely was covering two players. Not outright marking either of them, but covering the position that both were moving into. The only way he could possibly have been in a position to win the cross that did come in would have been to leave those other two players completely open. In which case he would have been absolutely blamed (and rightfully so) if the cross had gone to one of them.

Maybe he had moved a yard too deep a moment too early, but that is being very very picky. Especially, as I said, he was trying to cover two different players. It's definitely something that he does have a tendency to do that can hurt us, but this one would be very harsh.
